Roger Casement and Galway in 1916
On Thursday 7th April 2016 in Galway City Library The Liam and Tom O'Flaherty Society hosted a lecture on 'Roger Casement and Galway in 1916' presented by Angus Mitchell, the foremost authority on Casement.
Angus Mitchell, who was born in Africa and educated in England, has lived for over two decades in Ireland, where he has studied the life and legacy of Roger Casement and a group of associated radicals, pacifists, feminists, cosmopolitan nationalists, internationalists and other critics of empire. To date, his published research has focused largely on Roger Casement's work in Africa and South America.
Mitchell's extensive writings on Roger Casement have helped to retrieve the former diplomat into the history of human rights and placed him firmly within the progressive anti-colonial forces of pre-First World War Britain. Mitchell's work has also reinvigorated academic interest in Casement and the controversies associated with his life.
Much of the early research for his body of work was undertaken while Mitchell was resident in South America, where he travelled widely on the Amazon and revisited the principal locations where Casement stayed when consul general in Brazil.
His work has cast vital new light on Casement's entanglement with British intelligence and the enduring puzzle over the authenticity of the nefarious Black Diaries, the documents that have largely defined Casement's myth in the public imagination. Mitchell has long made the argument, along with other reputable historians, that these documents are forgeries.

This clip is taken from the workshops held at Mallavi Central College in Mullaitivu under The Parallel Versing project, a new global cultural media exchange initiative linking schools of Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland through music, IT and English. Parallel Versing is a cultural education project through a process of the creation of new music produced from two different global locations for one final composition. This pilot project is conducted by the partner organisations, The Music Project (Sri Lanka) and Beyond Skin (Northern Ireland). This particular clip is showing a student from Mallavi Central College, playing a piece of music to the students of Newtownbreda High School in Ireland via telecon. This is an example of one of the methods used to show, how the students communicated and exchanged their music/cultural experiences.
The Parallel Versing Project is currently working with schools in Kurunegala, Mullaitivu (Sri Lanka) and Belfast( Northern Ireland). This project is supported by the Esufally Family Foundation, and the South Eastern Education Library Broad through CRED funding.

Ballywillan Graveyard Portrush & James 11 Daughter's Grave
I'm up outside Portrush and have just come across old Ballywillan Church and Churchyard dating as far back as the 12th Century.
Ballywillan was once a place of some importance. The name means “The Town of the Mill”. The area of salt flats that lay between here and the sea was known as Magheramena, meaning the Plain of the Monks. Yes, there was an Abbey here too... Later this name was changed to Magherabuoy, meaning “The Yellow Plain” so called because of the large amounts of Rape that was grown here in the fields.
Ballywillan Church (Ballywillin) is one mile outside Portrush on the Ballywillan/ Magherabuoy Rd. The old church has no roof but the walls are intact. It’s not known who built the church. There is no definite date when it was built. It would have been the main Parish church for Ballywillan. In the early 17th Century came the reformation. The church would have been taken over by the Church of Ireland.
It would have been used until the 1840s, when a new church was built in nearby Portrush. Other churchgoers who came here would have been Presbyterian rather than C.o.I. Presbyterians would go on to build their own place of worship at Ballywillan Presbyterian church just along the road in 1829.
The oldest headstone in the graveyard marks the grave of a Royal Princess, the illegitimate daughter of James 2nd, King of England.
The story goes that King James 2nd was on his way in 1689 to the siege of Derry. He stopped off en-route for 3 days in Ballymoney. Whilst there he “took a shine”, to a local farmer’s daughter. This farmer thought he might gain favour from the King by offering his daughter for an evening. This he did. It later turned out that the farmer’s daughter was pregnant. King James, who had seven illegitimate children during his life, unsurprisingly denied having any relationship with the the farmer's daughter.
The child she bore was called Dorothea and was brought up into a Protestant Family. She later married a wealthy Coleraine Merchant called Ross and died early in life, only in her twenties. Local legend has it that she actually died giving birth.
Dorothea, daughter of James 2nd , is now buried right here in Ballywillan. Her headstone is said to have been erected by Queen Anne, her half sister. On the headstone is the Stuart Coat of Arms and a Fleur de Lys.
Another interesting grave with sea connections is that of Captain William Clarke who for a period of about 40 years commanding vessels around the British Islands and distinguished by many acts of heroism and humanity particularly the rescue of 64 persons from the wreck of the steamer “American” on the 24th January 1865. William points out that in the above inscription “British Islands” refers in fact to The West Indies.
Appalachia, Spirit Triumphant (book) trailer
Scotland National Library selects West Virginia Writer, Betty Dotson-Lewis, books on Appalachia due to their connection to Scottish and Scots-Irish Culture and History
Books selected: Appalachia: Spirit Triumphant Sago Mine Disaster (Featured Story): Appalachian Coalfield Stories The Sunny Side of Appalachia: Bluegrass from the Grassroots
Letter from Author:
Hi Y'all,
My name is Betty Dotson-Lewis. I am a writer from Summersville, West Virginia (Appalachia). My grandfather was William Basil Young of Southwest Virginia and of Scottish descent. I grew up in the Appalachian coalfields surrounded by the best people in the world with popular Scottish surnames such as; Smith, Brown, Wilson, McDaniel, McKenzie, Burnett, Ritchie, McQueen, Kincaid, McMillan, Akins and on and on. These are the people in my books.
So, I wanted you to know that we, the descendants of the Scottish and Scots-Irish, are still here, in these secluded hollows and windswept ridges of the Appalachian Mountains where our tough and resilient ancestors first settled. Appalachia is where you can get close to your Scottish roots on this side of the Atlantic and acquainted with your kin.
Our Scottish and Scots-Irish ancestors fled to America because of political and religious persecution. These settlers who made that long, hard journey across the ocean in the 1700s, often sick or starving, brought little or no material baggage, but they did bring their cultural baggage, which included the many ballads, stories, and instrumental tunes from their own heritage. Fiddle tunes with bows dusted in kitchen flour fill the air on any given Sunday after church when clans gather. They brought with them their severe and stubborn reputation and their brand of Protestantism which has served as the foundation for our Baptist and Methodist faiths today. They brought a talent for making corn whiskey (moonshine) to go along with their distaste for government.
Most landed in Philadelphia where they intended to settle but soon they discovered the good farm land was already taken, and they disliked the British Colonial government as much as the one they had left behind. Thus, the immigrants left Philly and headed west and south settling in the Appalachian Mountains becoming some of the first white setters in that region. The green valleys and highlands not only provided a remote haven and a barrier to the outside world, but reminded the Scotch and Scots-Irish of their homes in the Old World.
Drug Restores Hair Growth in Patients with Alopecia Areata
Seventy-five percent of patients with moderate to severe alopecia areata—an autoimmune disease that causes patchy and, less frequently, total hair loss—had significant hair regrowth after treatment with ruxolitinib, reported researchers from Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). By the end of their treatment, average hair regrowth was 92 percent.
