Belleek Pottery 1857 Oldest in Ireland Our Factory Tour
We're back staying in the luxury of the fabulous Manor House Country Hotel.
Out and about we drive along lower Lough Erne to Belleek Pottery to have a guided tour of the factory. This visit was the highlight of our Fermanagh mini break, a real treat. Don't you miss it!
Belleek Pottery Ltd is a porcelain company that began trading in 1884 as the Belleek Pottery Works Company Ltd in Belleek, County Fermanagh.
Today the factory employs around 50 skilled workers, many who have been there for three decades and more!
The pottery museum contains pieces dating back to when the pottery was started in 1857. Belleck lays claim to be the oldest working pottery on the whole island of Ireland.
History
The Pottery in Belleek began around 1849, after John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited his father's estate. Seeking to provide employment for his tenants, who had been affected by the Irish potato famine and, being an amateur mineralogist, ordered a geological survey of his land. He found that the local area was rich in minerals particularly Feldspar. Fieldspar was a vital ingredient for glassmaking and hard durable ceramics.
Bloomfield, realizing the potential, went into partnership with London architect Robert Williams Armstrong and Dublin merchant David McBirney. To help things along Bloomfield managed to get a railway line built to Belleek so that coal could be delivered with which to fire kilns.
Building started on the pottery in 1858. Initially starting with domestic products. It wasn't until 1863 that small amounts of the Parian porcelain for which Belleek is famous for was successfully produced. By 1865, the prestige of the company had increased enough that its market included Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, and the United States, and customers included the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria and the nobility.
Eugene Sheerin (Artist & Poet) worked as an artist at Belleek pottery late 19th century. One of his paintings Innocence (1879) of a young mother and child executed on a Belleek plate is on display at the Royal Victoria & Albert museum London.

Malin Head Co Donegal Ireland's Most Northerly Point
We have arrived at wild, rugged Malin Head, Inishowen peninsula, the most northerly point in Ireland. It is a very popular spot to visit in the Summertime but you have it all to yourself in Winter. I prefer Winter.
Malin Head (Irish: Cionn Mhálanna) is located on the Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland and is the most northerly point of the island of Ireland. The northernmost tip is the headland named Banba's Crown located at latitude 55.38ºN.
Malin Head gives its name to the Malin sea area. There is a weather station on the head, which is one of 22 such stations whose reports are broadcast as part of the BBC Shipping Forecast. This staion communicated information to and from passing ships and to the rest of the UK.
A military watchtower was built at Banba's Crown in 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars. The British Admiralty built yhis signal tower to keep a check on the ships that were parring by the head. The tower was manned by soldiers. -Really it was a defended guardhouse. It is dated 1804 and cost £600. Around 1902, a signal station was also built at Banba's Crown, quite close to the old Napoleonic watchtower. Both of these buildings still stand.
During World War II, the Irish Government allowed the British Government to site two radio direction finders on Malin Head. This top-secret operation was mentioned in The Cranborne Report. The RDF equipment was used to monitor U-Boat and aerial activity in the North Atlantic. On a section of land jutting out from the mainland at Banba's Crown, the word 'Éire' can be seen in large letters that were formed from placing stones together to form the letters.
Scenes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi were filmed in Malin Head.
