This trip was done in June 2015. We camped near Famore Beach the night before we hiked as it was a long drive and we left late. It was a good walk but would have been better if the weather was nicer. Additional information can be found in the link below.

Burren Lakes and Turloughs
The Burren is a karst limestone plateau measuring of 100 square miles in north County Clare, punctuated with lakes and seasonal lakes called turloughs. This delicate and unique environment is the result of Neolithic farmers over grazing the area during the stone age. Everything you could possibly want to know about the Burren can be found using the link below
After two days march, without anything remarkable but bad quarters, we entered into the barony of Burren, of which it is said, that it is a country where there is not water enough to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury him. - Edmund Ludlow 1651.
So said one of Cromwells Generals...
The Burren is a unique environment, a karst limestone landscape of about one hundred square miles in north County Clare in the west of Ireland. The limestone was formed 360 million years ago and it became exposed by a combination of the stripping action of glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age and the overgrazing of prehistoric farmers. Consequently the area is of immense importance for geological, archaeological and botanical reasons, and is it a remarkably fertile environment for farming. Although much of the region appears dry there are several lakes which exist all year round. In winter, turloughs (dry lakes) appear suddenly as the water table rises due to increasing rainfall at that time of the year, and they usually disappear completely by early summer.
