The Baluarte Bridge, officially the Baluarte Bicentennial Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge in Mexico. It is located between the municipalities of Concordia in Sinaloa and Pueblo Nuevo in Durango, along the Durango–Mazatlán highway, Mexico 40D. The bridge's central span, 520 metres (1,710 ft) long, is also the longest cable-stayed span in North America, 37 metres (121 ft) longer than that of the John James Audubon Bridge in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Less than an hour and a half from Mazatlan it's an easy day trip and the highway itself is stunning.

We are expecting a significant increase in tourism, right now we have 10,000 rooms in Mazatlan, and we expect that in the next 10 to 15 years, we will have double that. We are opening up this part of the country to about 40 (m) million Mexicans, many of those that would like to see, or would like to visit tourist destinations like Mazatlan.

STORYLINE
Mexico is wrapping up construction on a 2.2 (b) billion US dollars highway that's expected to carve out a new road for a part of the country that's been hit hard by drug trafficking and drug violence.
The Durango-Mazatlan Highway will be made up of 115 bridges and 61 tunnels and is designed to bring people, cargo and legitimate commerce safely through a mountain range known until now for marijuana, opium poppies - and an accident-prone road called the Devil's Backbone.
The highway is 230 kilometres long (140 miles) and will link port cities on the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific by a 12-hour drive.
The world's highest cable-stayed bridge - Baluarte - will be part of the highway system.
From December 2006 until September 2011, Sinaloa and Durango on either side of the Baluarte Bridge were among the deadliest states in terms of drug-related killings.
Government officials say the new road will bring legitimate economic activity to a troubled area.
The highway will eventually move five (m) million vehicles a year, more than four times the number on the old road, plus more produce and goods from Asia to the Mexican interior and southern US.
I see this road being an excellent resource to improve the economy in this part of the country, said Francisco Cordoba, Sinaloa State Tourism Secretary.
Sinaloa state tourism officials predict an explosion for the resort city of Mazatlan, hard hit by drug violence in recent years, as the new road gives Mexicans in interior states an easy drive to the beach.
We are opening up this part of the country to about 40 (m) million Mexicans, many of those that would like to see, or would like to visit tourist destinations like Mazatlan, Cordoba said.
