Urquhart Castle to Balvenie Castle, Dufftown - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Nine
In this episode we travel from Loch Ness to Balvenie Castle in Dufftown.
Originally known as Mortlach, Balvenie Castle was built in the 12th century by a branch of the powerful Comyn family (the Black Comyns) and extended and altered in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Balvenie Castle served as a garrison during the Jacobite rebellion. It was abandoned in 1720s but was briefly garrisoned by Government troops in 1746.
The tower in Dufftown was previously a prison but now serves as a tourist information centre and clock tower.
As well as Balvenie castle, Dufftown is also the home of the Glenfiddich distillery and produces more whisky than any other town in Scotland.
The Retro Lab's Scottish Adventure is a two thousand mile road trip around Scotland in which we continued our mission to find Britain's (and maybe even the world's) best driving roads, also visiting many castles and other points-of-interest along the way, but it didn't go quite how we had planned....

Old Photographs Dufftown Moray Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Dufftown in Moray, The old Kirkton of Mortlach, with its historic church, is on the southern outskirts of the present town. In the 19th century, James Duff, 4th Earl Fife, established Dufftown as housing for soldiers returning home from the Napoleonic War.. Dufftown's notable buildings include Balvenie Castle, which was partly built with stones from the ruins of nearby Auchindoun Castle. The street plan of Dufftown is mainly four main roads meeting at the clock tower; previously a prison but now a tourist information centre. Dufftown is located on the River Fiddich and is the location of several Scotch whisky distilleries. It produces more malt whisky than any other town in Scotland. George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen, was born in Dufftown on 5 June 1829. He was the son of William Stephen, a carpenter, and Elspet, daughter of John Smith, a crofter at Knockando, Moray. He wwas known as Sir George Stephen, Baronet, between 1886 and 1891, was a prominent Canadian businessman. He made his fame in Montreal and was the first Canadian to be elevated to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was the financial genius behind the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway.. He died on 29 November 1921. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

The Commando Memorial to Eilean Donnan Castle - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Three
In this episode we observe lots of spectacular scenery while on our way from the Commando Memorial near Spean Bridge village to Eilean Donnan Castle.
On an island where three sea lochs, Loch Long, Loch Duich and Loch Alsh meet, Eilean Donan was first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.
Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for almost 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years restoration work the castle was re-opened in 1932.

Dufftown to Aberdour Beach - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Ten
In this episode we travel from Balvenie Castle in Dufftown to Aberdour Beach near New Aberdour.
Aberdour beach can be found near the 19th century planned village of New Aberdour, which contains one of the oldest churches in Scotland which is believed to have been founded in 580 AD by Saint Drostan and Saint Columba.
While exploring Aberdour beach we found more swallows building their nests in the caves.
