Ancient Technology of Making Beppu Bamboo Crafts - Incredible Bamboo Woodworking Skills
Ancient Technology of Making Beppu Bamboo Crafts - Incredible Bamboo Woodworking Skills That Will Blow Your Mind.
Beppu Take Zaiku are bamboo crafts produced centering on Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, and mainly made from madake bamboo grown and harvested in the local area.
Beppu bamboo crafts are all handmade and characterized by a distinctive range of eight basic weaving techniques, and in Oita Prefecture are the only Japanese traditional craftwork designated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The eight basic weaving patterns are yotsume (cross), mutsume (hexagonal), yatsume (octagonal), ajiro (net), gozame (mat), matsuba (pine needle), kikuzoko (chrysanthemum bottom), and rinko (bull’s eye).

► How to make a Beppu Bamboo Basketry:
1. Harvesting and Removal of Oi
Bamboo grows in groves and good quality green bamboo is harvested after 3 or 4 years, cut to size and boiled in caustic soda water for about 15 minutes to remove excess oil.
2. Sun-Drying
After boiling, the bamboo is laid in the sun to dry and turns a beautiful ivory yellow; it is known as sarashi-dake and is the main bamboo raw product used by weavers.
3. Rough-Cutting
The sun-dried bamboo is now cut into suitable lengths using a kikuwari tool and the joint sections are cut off before splitting the bamboo in half along its grain with a knife. Rough-cutting (vertical splitting) is carried out many times and although a seemingly simple task, it actually takes about 3 years of practice to cut straight, thin, and well-balanced split pieces.
4. Stripping
The split bamboo pieces are stripped of their soft, inner layer, and split into narrower, thinner lengths by rough-stripping, small splitting, and on to thin stripping. In rough-stripping, the pieces are stripped until the ratio of exterior bark to the interior layer is about 4:6.
5. Finishing Thin Bamboo Strips
A sukisen tool gives a uniform thickness to strips, and a uniform width is achieved by pulling them between two small blades; the corners are then rounded off with a chamfer knife in preparation for weaving.
6. Weaving the Base
In bamboo weaving, the base or bottom section requires the highest skill as it is difficult to create a solid body from a plane surface; in this stage the bamboo is softened over a flame.
7. Weaving the Body and Neck
The body is woven as a continuous piece, and according to the design and purpose, the article is shaped by changing or spacing the weaving technique.
8. Finishing the Rim and Adding Fittings
The rim is woven to complete the weaving process. There are several rim finishing techniques: for example, tomobuchi (a continuation of the main body), atebuchi (solid bamboo rim fitted and fixed with bamboo strips or wire), or makibuchi (bamboo or Japanese wisteria is wrapped around the rim). Green or white baskets are not lacquer-coated, or dyed and are ready for use once the rim and handles or fittings have been added.
9. Coating
Undyed green bamboo ware is known as aomono; ware made of oil-removed bamboo is shiromono; dyed ware is somemono; and lacquered ware is kuromono. Coating involves applying a first undercoat of dye by boiling, and after drying, the article is gently polished with a cloth. Too much pressure while polishing the weave can damage the bamboo and cause a loss of shine; therefore, great attention is paid in this stage. Raw lacquer is often used as a finish; however, sometimes, shuai-urushi, a concentrated colored lacquer, or raw lacquer may be applied to give an antique finish.
Since lacquer will only dry under the right temperature and humidity, the woven lacquered works are left in a wooden room specially designed to effectively retain moisture. Some pieces will receive further decoration before they are finished and ready for use.

Highly Skilled Bamboo Crafts Unique Traditional Techniques – Takayama Tea Whisks (Chasen)
Highly Skilled Bamboo Crafts Unique Traditional Techniques –Takayama Tea Whisks (Chasen).
For 500 years, the techniques of Takayama chasen were passed down from father to one single son in Yamato Takayama only.
Tea ceremony is one of Japan's famous cultural traditions. It is the entertaining of guests with green tea, following a traditional, set pattern.
There are two basic varieties of tea ceremony: koi cha and usu cha. Originally, koi cha was a formal style, with usu cha being a simplified, more common version born later.
Master Craftsman: Kubo Keizo, 72 years old
Kubo Tatehiro, Born in Nara Prefecture in 1982
And his wife: Kubo Sachiko, Born in Nara Prefecture in 1983
In Ikoma, Kubo is a very common name, and number of chasen manufacturers bear this name.
How to make a Takayama Tea Whisk (Chasen)
1. Katagi
Bamboo considered good for chasen is said to be that taken from the mountains of Hyogo, Nara, Kyoto, and other areas on the Pacific Ocean side of the Kinki region. This is because the soil in that area is low in nutrients, causing the bamboo there to grow strong and be perfect for making sturdy chasen.
That Edison used Japanese bamboo for the filament of the world's first light bulb is well known, but in fact that bamboo was madake bamboo from Hachiman City in Kyoto, very near Takayama.
Next, the bamboo is progressively halved with a large knife and divided into sixteen pieces. With a small blade, the bark is separated, and the interior snapped off and removed.
2. Kowari
The sixteen segments are alternately divided into large and small segments to make the number of tines required for the intended purpose and school.
3. Aii-kezuri
The ends of the tines are boiled in hot water and placed on a stand, then thinned from the base to the tip.
Varying the carving method according to the chasen's shape, after carving to the right thickness the tips of the tines are bent inwards to create a tapered brush-shape.
It is said that the flavor of the tea changes depends on the ajiーkezuri stage. It is the most difficult, important stage, and a test of the craftsman's true worth.
4. Mentori
One by one, the thick tines of the carved chasen have their corners worked until they are smooth. This prevents the tea sticking to the tines during the tea ceremony.
5. Shita-ami
The beveled thick tines are raised and bound with thread, spreading them while leaving the thin tines in place.
6. Uwa-ami
Another layer of thread is added to securely fix the base.
7. koshi-narabe
The inner tines are gathered in the middle with a bamboo spatula and arranged to fix the size of the chasen, and the heights and intervals at the roots are made uniform.
8. Shitate
The bends in the tips of the tines are corrected and arranged into their respective shapes, and the lengths of and the intervals between the tines from the roots to the tips are adjusted.

How to make a Bamboo Basket Box & Basketware:
1. Cutting and Washing
Since the raw material madake bamboo is minimally processed, the selection of bamboo is very important. After one year of growth, the thickness and height of a bamboo do not change, but with age the color and hardness change; bamboo aged 3 to 5 years is the best for bamboo ware. In November and December, the best time to cut high quality bamboo with little insect damage, enough bamboo for a year is cut with a bamboo cutting saw.
The bamboo is cleaned up with a scouring brush to remove dirt before splitting.
2. Splitting the Bamboo
The bamboo is split to 1 cm or so in width. Since bamboo has strong vertical fibers, it is easily cut with a hatchet. Round strips are made from a tough layer close to the outer layer. The strips are shaved and thinned by hatchet.
3. Determining the Thickness
Trim the thickness by using a tool called Sendai
4. Making Strips (1)
A small knife is used to make a fine slit in the bamboo, which is then split further by a push of the hand. The tip is thinly shaved to a point.
5. Making Strips (2)
The shaved bamboo strips are made round by pulling them through a series of ever diminishing holes in an iron plate; from large to small, and from a coarse finish to a medium and then a smooth finished fine round strip.
6. Bending
Twenty to thirty bamboo strips are laid upon an electric-heated curved iron plate and bent. Uneven bending will affect the finished work, so the task requires much skill and care. Curved irons vary in size from 2 to 15 cm in diameter and are used to bend the strips in accordance with the curves of the design.
7. Making the Base Ring
A doran (a metal cylinder) is heated over a gas stove, and a bamboo strip is wound around it to make a ring. After holding the bamboo around the cylinder for about 20 seconds, it is cooled and shaped within a samashi frame to create a beautiful ring. The ends of the bamboo ring are cut diagonally and joined by applying a special glue and distinctive tsugite technique to make the joint virtually invisible.
8. Drilling
The bamboo ring is marked and holes are individually machine-drilled; slightly changing the angle of the hole will create a different effect when the weaving is completed.
9. Weaving
The basic weaving method of Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku is gozame-ami (mat plaiting). Higos are split to produce two types from the white inner layer. They are alternately woven to create simple but tasteful designs.
10. Assembly
Round strips are inserted in the ring holes and by careful bending and manipulation, the work slowly takes form; Suruga Bamboo Ware are renowned for their elegant curves and shapes.
This method is called Tsugite for complete product.

Professional bamboo harvesting in Japan. Very Efficient.
Bamboo is harvested in Kyoto.
Cut near the ground using a bamboo saw. A bamboo saw will give you a clean cut. Cut into the base of the small branches and quickly pull to snap them off cleanly. Cows love to eat bamboo leaves and the high cellulose content can keep them warm in winter (apparently according to an old farmer)... In japan the leaves are use for many things. The leaves harvested here were given to a shinto shrine for use in a traditional ceremony.
