Forests, Flowers, and Waterfalls
Text: Rick Charette
Sun-Link-Sea
A “forest and nature resort,” a privately operated getaway idyll (NT$250 entry fee).
At the upper end of the resort road is at Songlong Rock Waterfall. At the base of a Cinemascope-wide semi-circular cliff is a large, deep green lagoon busy with fish in the water and eye-catching birds above. Two massive mid-lagoon boulders are covered completely with vegetation, trees “impossibly” growing atop their solid-rock bed. The cliff’s base is “gone,” to a height of 30 meters and a depth of 30, a cave now where once soft sandstone was emplaced. A paved pathway takes you along the cliff base and through the gaping hole, and you emerge directly before the waterfall itself, at its base.

Between Sun-Link-Sea and Xitou – Wangyou Forest
Beside County Road 95, a few kilometers from Sun-Link-Sea, you’ll see a large “Wangyou Forest” sign From there, a narrow road leaps up past tea fields, tilted at startling angles. Take the 15-minute huff-and-puff walk up to the forest-entrance path (NT$50 entry), or use one of the privately-operated shuttle vans (NT$200 return). Wangyou Forest is a section of tall-pine forest drowned when the creek that gurgles through was blocked by Taiwan’s infamous 921 Earthquake in 1999.
Le Midi Hotel Chitou
This is a veritable high-mountain hideaway oasis of regal splendor amidst a world of tall trees and rugged mountains. The owners are avid hunters of European-nobility antiques, and eager to show them off. In the lobby and other areas you are regaled with imperial-French furniture, clocks, and other curios collected on hunting forays in Europe. The guestrooms are all spacious and tastefully appointed in modernistic continental European style, with bright nature-evocative green, white, and brown tones predominant. Room rates start at NT$11,000; one dinner and breakfast included

Xiaobantian Bridge
Opened in 2014, this is mountainous Nantou County’s highest extradosed bridge, its roadbed 60 meters up from the valley floor. Its soaring grey towers are shaped like giant bamboo stalks, just like Taipei’s famed Taipei 101 tower. Xiaobantian is home to numerous fetching waterfalls, Dexing Waterfall perhaps the best-known. On the higher reaches of a boulder-strewn Beishi River tributary stream, it has two sections, the upper, 30m high, has carved a cool, calm pool at its base perfect for wading.
Sky Ladder Scenic Area (NT$50 adults)
A well-maintained trail brings you down, down, relentlessly down to the bottom of Taiji Gorge. Moving through thick bamboo forest, among your gorge-bottom rewards will be the Sky Ladder – a suspension-bridge engineering marvel – a sheer-cliff cave-dwelling Earth God temple below it, and Qinglong Waterfall.
BeYoung Garden
On the second floor of a still-operating small inter-town bus station that looks like a set for a 1950s period movie. “Zhushan” literally means “Bamboo Mountain”; the area is renowned for bamboo cultivation and products, bamboo is a key restaurant decorative material, and the chefs make edible bamboo a prominent ingredient. Specially recommended: the “three-cups mushroom bitter-tea range chicken” and “dried bamboo with soy-braised pork” set meals.

Adventures in Taiwan: Zhushan Sky Ladder (竹山天梯)
Follow a young man on his journey to Zhushan Township where he finds respite and leisure in the mountains.
Zhushan Sky Ladder & Green Dragon Waterfall (竹山天梯 & 青龍瀑布), Nantou,Taiwan, 7/4/2013
Zhushan (竹山): In order to make tourists easier to reach Taiji Canyon (太極峽谷), the government built a sky ladder suspension bridge on 2 precipices crossing a river. Zhushan Sky Ladder (竹山天梯) used to be one of the only 2 suspension bridges with ladder in the world. The length is 136 meters with 208 steps and the difference of height is around 20 meters.
From the entrance to Taiji Canyon, you walk through bamboo forest, climb thousands stairs, crouch through hole in the rock, cross Earth God Temple, and you will reach Green Dragon Waterfall (青龍瀑布).
The water which comes from the waterfall flows across Taiji Canyon. There are many waterfalls on the giant rock along the canyon. One of these looks really like a human face, with eyebrows, nose, cheek, and even with tears.
Taiwan Nantou Bamboo Sky Ladder (南投竹山天梯)
Feel the spectacular nature-landscape attraction in the heart of Taiwan, Nantou - Bamboo Sky Ladder (南投竹山天梯). The ladder suspension bridge is ranked as world number 2 in Nantou and tourists may enjoy the scenery view of nature bamboo, gigantic rock, steep cliffs and Taichi Valley Scenic.

The second stop of our recent trip to Nantou County was Shuili, where we visited the Shuili Snake Kiln and had dinner at a meat ball and a duck meat restaurant. The Snake Kiln is a very interesting place and worth recommending. You can learn a few things about pottery, do some pottery DIY, have a coffee, and by souvenirs.

Travel in Taiwan (2016, 1/2)
By Richard Saunders
A ride along the Pingxi Branch Railway Line, which runs through a picturesque valley about an hour from the Taipei City center by train, is a great way to spend a day of relaxing sightseeing, but it also provides easy access to some of northern Taiwan’s finest day walks. Hikers are truly spoilt for choice in this area: there’s enough to discover hereabouts to keep an explorer happy for a week of hikes or more. If there’s only time to do one of the easier routes, however, the choice is pretty clear. One of the finest short hikes within day-tripping distance of Taipei is the stunningly scenic Sandiaoling Waterfall Trail.
The Sandiaoling Waterfall Trail is named for three waterfalls, Hegu, Motian, and Pipa Cave, all three impressive, though the first can only be seen from a distance. It takes about two hours to get from Sandiaoling Railway Station to the last of the falls (about 2.5km). From there, most casual hikers will take the same route back, but for more adventurous types there are two alternative routes, one to Dahua, the next station on the Pingxi line, the other to Houtong, the station before Sandiaoling when coming from Taipei.
Getting to the trailhead is easy. Take a Local Train (NT$59 one way; about one hour) from Taipei Main Station to Sandiaoling, a tiny settlement picturesquely set in the densely wooded valley of the young Keelung River. Leaving the station, follow the tracks away from the Taipei direction towards a tunnel. Before the tunnel, the Pingxi line splits off from the main trunk line, which heads to the northeast coast. Take the pedestrian underpass under the railway, and then follow the path beside the Pingxi line. After walking about ten minutes, the tracks enter a small settlement, passing the pale-blue building of the abandoned village elementary school across the tracks. Cross the tracks (keeping a lookout for trains!) and you have reached the trailhead, which is right beside the school building. Walk up the concrete path, passing a few houses and following the steps, to reach the wooded hillside above.
After a short ascent the trail levels out, and then it’s an easy 30-minute walk through mixed woodland, including several attractive bamboo groves, to the first of the three waterfalls. Hegu Waterfall, 40 meters in height, plunges into a deep gorge below, and can be seen in the distance from a flat observation area to the left of the path.
Above Hegu Waterfall, the path joins the stream of the waterfalls for the first time, crosses a pair of small suspension bridges, and continues along the left bank of the stream, now through thick jungle. The trail becomes narrower, and is a little rough in places, with some slippery tree roots and small rocks to negotiate, but the scenery is beautiful. After 20 minutes the trail reaches the foot of Motian Waterfall, which falls well clear of the cliff face.
A small wooden viewing platform offers great views of the waterfall from below. More adventurous walkers can follow the trail a few meters further as it starts to climb out of the gorge, then turn right at a junction and traverse a short but muddy path that leads into the overhang, where it’s possible to get right behind the waterfall.
To continue the walk to the third fall, head back to the junction and turn right to continue along the main path, which climbs out of the gorge via a newly installed metal staircase. At the top, less than a hundred meters above the second fall, is Pipa Cave Waterfall, a slightly smaller version of its sister below, which leaps over an overhanging cliff of golden sandstone. Both waterfalls are perfect spots for a rest or a picnic lunch, although the upper fall is generally quieter on busy weekends.

南投縣竹山鎮太極峽谷天梯風景區(Zhushan Sky Ladder), 青龍瀑布 (Green Dragon Waterfall). 太極峽谷 (Taiji Canyon) #zhiyuntec
One of the only two suspension bridges featuring ladders in the world, the #Zhushan #SkyLadder has a length of 136 meters and 208 steps, with a difference in height of around 20 meters.
This bridge was built on two precipices crossing a river, with the aim of making it easier for tourists to reach #Taiji Canyon (#太極峽谷). Standing on the rocks, Taiji Canyon looks like a human face.
From the entrance to Taiji Canyon, you begin your stroll through bamboo forests. But then the hard work begins as you climb thousands of stairs, crouch through small holes in the rock, cross the Earth God Temple, which is more than a hundred years old, and finally reach the famous #GreenDragon #Waterfalls (#青龍瀑布). Although you can get really close to the waterfall, even sitting from a distance you will still feel the water carried by the breeze touching the pores on your face. The water that flows here is destined for Taiji Canyon, and merges with the off-flow of many waterfalls that line the canyon.
Be warned, this hike is not for everyone - you need to be reasonably sprightly to walk comfortably here. Nevertheless, we absolutely recommend the Zhushan Sky Ladder for its natural and impressive beauty.
There are around 1000 steps from entrance to Taiji Canyon. Make sure you have enough energy to counter it.
Because there is no public transport to the Zhushan Sky Ladder, we recommend you hire one of our friendly, English-speaking guides to take you there. They can also point out the giant rock along the canyon that looks just like a human face, with eyebrows, a nose, cheeks and even tears!

Zhushan Zinangong & Jiji weir (紫南宮 & 集集攔河堰), Nantou,Taiwan, 7/3/2013
Zinangong (紫南宮) is a famous temple for lending money to its believers for up to NT$600. After one year, believers are supposed to come back to return the borrowed money (believers often return with interest as extra thanks to the Land god). The max. NT$600 may be saved or used to purchase something relating to your trade as either of these two actions are supposed to help facilitate the lucky flow of wealth around you.
Everyone wants to touch the Golden Chicken which is outside of temple. You may as well go to Taiwan's one and only 7-stars bathroom architecturally designed to resemble Bamboo shoots.
Jiji weir has become the water resources management center of Zhuoshui River. Its purpose is stabilizing irrigational water resources, allocating water resources effectively and providing industrial water for Yunlin Off-Shore basic industrial district.
