Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (formerly the Bamfield Marine Station) is a marine research station established in 1972, located in Bamfield, Barkley Sound, British Columbia and run by the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the University of Alberta, and the University of Calgary. The Centre hosts numerous public education programs in marine related science. BC Field Trips organizes many instructional and educational programs for school-aged children at the Centre. The Centre also runs courses for university students during the summer (May to late August or early September) and during the fall (September to mid-December) through their affiliated universities.
The Centre is housed in the original building used as the western terminus of the British Empire's worldwide undersea cable called the All Red Line. Originally the site of the Pacific Cable Board (PCB) Cable Station, which served as the eastern terminus of the trans-Pacific telegraph cable linking Canada to Fanning Island (1,600 kilometres south of Hawaii). The telegraph cable operated from 1901 to 1959.
The Centre also lends continued logistical support for Folger Passage and Barkley Sound with Ocean Networks Canada.In April 2016, Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and the Huu-ay-aht First Nations partnered with the Hakai Institute to launch a drone. The drone took a series of photos, which were then used to map portions of the Barkley Sound area.On July 1, 2018, Dr. Sean Rogers, a biology instructor at the University of Calgary, was named director of the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre for a five-year term. Rogers has taught university courses at the Centre, and had been named acting director in 2016.

Ethnobotany
Ethnobotany is the study of the relationship between plants and human cultures.

Marine Invertebrate Zoology - BMSC Summer Field Course
BMSC 6-Week undergraduate field course.
Marine invertebrates are members of every known animal phylum, and Barkley Sound contains a fantastic diversity of them. In this course, students investigate the zoology of living marine invertebrates: their functional morphology, behaviour, ecology, and phylogenetic relationships. On a tidal schedule, students conduct inspiring – and intensive – field work to explore a variety of habitats including exposed rocky shores, mudflats, eelgrass beds, and beaches, and collect a tremendous range of organisms, from Asteriidae to Zoantharia, and everything in between. Students also spend an exhilarating and extensive time in the lab examining the animals up-close, investigating their comparative morphology and behaviour. Field and lab work are complemented by activities, discussion, lectures, and primary literature readings.

Upgrades to Bamfield Road Not Enough for Many on The West Coast
PORT ALBERNI - People travelling between Port Alberni and Bamfield face one of Vancouver Island's most treacherous highways, but it is about to get a bit better. The road to Bamfield is a ninety kilometre gravel artery well known for its narrow mountain passes, and its ability to beat even the most capable all-terrain vehicles into submission. Today the provincial government announced a 1.3 million dollar resurfacing contract for a small patch of the highway and several roads inside Bamfield itself. The government investment will in now way transform the rugged highway as it will only pave about five kilometres.
It's nice to have some repairs done to roads in and around Bamfield, said Alberni Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser, but that shouldn't be confused with the issue that the roadway is not up to public safety standards. The regions MLA isn't the only saying the investment falls short. The Huu-ay-aht First Nation live on both sides of the highway and say for economic growth and safety the entire ninety kilometres need to be paved.

When sea stars attack! See the incredible way this anemone escapes predatory sea stars.
Unlike it's sedentary relatives, the scarlet sea anemone (Stomphia didemon) has the remarkable ability to 'swim' if a predatory sea star gets too close. It's 'swimming' behavior is more like bouncing, though, as it bends back and forth and is moved along the bottom by water currents. Nonetheless, it is an elegant dance, particularly for an organism that resembles a flower more than an animal.

This Stomphia spent over six minutes stinging/attacking the Dermasterias before it committed to its exhaustive escape swim.
