Croatia has voted against gay marriage in a nationwide referendum. The outcome means that the country's constitution will be amended to ban same-sex marriage.
A total of 65.75 percent of voters answered yes to the question: do you agree the constitution should be amended to define marriage as matrimony between a man and a woman?
The referendum sparked fierce debate in the mainly Catholic country, which joined the EU in July.
Zagreb resident Ivan said the result was no surprise: The referendum victors could have been predicted, it was expected that tradition would win out - that customary norms, the church and religion would prevail.

Croatian General Chooses Heroic End in Face of Unjust Hague Court Guilty Verdict
Subscribe to Vesti News
The tragedy that can be called the main event of the week. Croatian general Slobodan Praljak, having heard the guilty verdict with the punishment of 20 years in prison at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, took out a bottle of poison, and no one knows where it came from, opened it and, with the words, Praljak is not a war criminal! I reject your verdict, drank the deadly liquid.
The Hague Tribunal is a kangaroo court established by the UN Security Council’s decision in 1993. At that time, Russia's foreign policy was still naïve and credulous about the intentions of the West, that's why we voted yes at the Security Council, hoping for fairness in the international investigation of war crimes during the break-up of Yugoslavia and the civil wars there.
In response, we ran into treachery. The Tribunal clearly selectively focused on Serbs and Serbian politicians. The processes were long and obviously tendentious. As a result, ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic died in 2006 in the Hague jail, never hearing his verdict.

This square, called the red heart of Croatia, is in line with the memorial statue and Dollatz Market, which is popular among the common people. A street event in Santa costumes on the other side of the city will delight passers-by. There is already a year-end atmosphere. The plaza is always overflowing with people and busy everywhere. The statue of the entrance to the market is very warm. In the center of the plaza, a number of shops open their doors and sell various kinds of food and daily necessities. Most of them carry their own items and do direct transactions with consumers. If you come here, you can buy all the reasonable goods. 20 people came to the group. I'm from Germany. I traveled after finishing school after studying law. I will go to lunch after having a break and watching the parliament and the court. I thought I had to watch a video about this market on YouTube. The fruit market here at 7am is popular because of fresh produce and cheap prices. I was tired of traveling and I was able to taste various fruits here. I come because I am one of the special places in Zagreb. I go to see these things and go round and round to find good vegetables and fruits

Novi Dvori | Chapel of St. Joseph | Golf Club Ban Jelačić Zaprešić | Weddings in Croatia antropoti
The most attractive wedding venue offer of Zaprešić is the New Jelačić Palace, a unique monument of cultural and historic heritage only 1,5 km from the town centre (some 20 km from Zagreb). The Palace is a unique example of well preserved complete manorial estate.
Zaprešić, a town with a population of 26,000 and lying 17 km west of Zagreb.
The Jelačić Novi Dvori is one of the best preserved feudal estates in Croatia. Sporting options include football, handball, basketball, bowling, equestrian sports and show jumping, paragliding, motor handgliding, motocross, cycling, tennis and golf (three PAR 3).
In 1855 Jelačić built a neo-Gothic chapel of St Joseph on a meadow next to the Palace.
Ban Josip Jelačić had all of the estate and castle reconstructed and annexed. In its east wing the Palace was extended by 18 m, the upper level was redecorated along with the cellar and the façade. A beautiful promenade surrounds the Palace.
The antiquities and husbandry of New Palace as a whole include the Palace, chapel of St Joseph, the family Jelačić vault, gardens, orchard, residential and service rooms, vegetable garden, arable land and forest-park. Curia nova, New Palace is first mentioned under this name at the end of the 16th century when it was in the possession of the Zrinski family, owners of Susedgrad (Old Palaces). However a valid court document from 1852 says that the Palace was built in 1611 as an ordinary one-storey kurija mainly made of wood.
Owners of the New Palace were the Zrinski, Čikulin, Sermagei, Festetić and the Counts Erdödy families. It was the Erdödy family that sold the estate to ban Jelačić in 1851. The Palace was bequeathed to the Croatian people by the daughters of Đuro Jelačić, Anka and Vera in 1934.
Preserved and partly restored outbuildings, offices and service rooms are another asset of the New Palace. The circular threshing machine is the only and the oldest object of that type in Croatia, it comes from the 17th century and is the monument of zero cathegory. Former crops storage facility, a three-storey granary was reconstructed in 1987 and turned into a Gallery, today Museum of Matija Skurjeni. It displays permanent exhibition of a prominent naive artist Skurjeni, and a historic photo-exhibition “The New Jelačić Palace”.

CROATIA: BOSNIAN MUSLIM REFUGEES LATEST SITUATION
English/Nat
Up to 25-thousand Bosnian Muslims, stranded on a road south-east of the Croatian capital, might be forcibly repatriated home.
The refugees, who are loyal to renegade Muslim leader Fikret Abdic, fled the Bihac area in north-west Bosnia after Abdic's forces were defeated by the Bosnian government army.
Desperate to avoid Bosnian muslim troops, thousands of these rebel Muslims are trapped at Vojnic, south of Zagreb on the road to north-eastern Bosnia.
They prefer to stay in Croatia in this basic camp rather than return to their homes in the region around Bihac.
These 25-thousand men and women say they're scared the Bosnian government troops will forcibly draft them into their army.
Nevertheless, the Croatian government may forcibly repatriate them.
Officials say they have made a deal with Abdic, currently under house arrest in Zagreb, allowing the refugees to return home on the proviso the men are not drafted.
The United Nations however fears for the rebel Muslims and is trying to persuade the government not to repatriate them by force.
SOUNDBITE:
We're getting reports from the interviews that we're doing with the refugees, our human rights team has been there. They have talked of physical intimidation and in some cases sexual harassment by the 5th Corps and others.
SUPER CAPTION: Chris Gunness, UN Spokesman
Croats deny the charges, and guarantee their safety.
SOUNDBITE:
We won't force but try to create possibilities...that in Kladusha also with Bosnian government and other organisations that the situation in Velika Kladusha will be safe for all returnees.
SUPER CAPTION: Josip Esterajher, Croatian Office for Displaced Persons and Refugees
About 200-thousand Bosnian refugees remain in Croatia, and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expects thousands more from northern Bosnia to arrive in Croatia.

Croatia-Serbs Allege Croat Jets Bombed Refugees
T/I 10:03:08
STORY: CONVOY
LOCATION: BOSANSKI NOVI, CROATIA
DATE: 8 AUGUST 1995
DURATION: 2.32
Fleeing Serbs allege Croat jets bombed refugees
Bosnian Serb television in Banja Luka on Wednesday (9/8) showed
pictures of what it said was the aftermath of an attack by
Croatian planes on a convoy of refugees from Krajina on Tuesday.
Three people were reported killed, with many injured. According to
the Tanjug news agency, it was the third attack on the refugees on
the road from Novi Grad to Prijedor. The refugees were fleeing via
Kordun, close to Svodna. UN observers would say only that two
unidentified fighter bombers dropped four bombs in the Dvor region
on the Croatian-Bosnian border. Spokeswoman Major Rita Le Page
said the two MiG 21s attacked a region where conflict was
continuing between the Croatian army and secessionist Serbs in the
Dvor/Bosanski Novi area. She did not specify whether the planes
were Croatian, but said three planes took off on Tuesday afternoon
from the Croatian base at Pleso, near Zagreb. The UN was not in a
position to indicate the targets or whether bombs had caused any
damage, but distressed soldiers and civilians fleeing along the
refugee route told their own stories. One hardened Serb veteran of
the fighting struggled to contain himself as he told how his wife
and her brother were killed by the planes as they stopped to drink
some water, three days after fleeing their Krajina homes. His sons
were wounded and none of the family had eaten in three days. The
Serb army's record of ethnic cleansing throughout Bosnia in four
years has meant world sympathy for their civilians has been in
short supply, but Zagreb is becoming increasingly concerned that
its Croat fighters are themselves garnering a growing reputation
for war atrocities.
SHOWS:
(BOSANSKI NOVI, CROATIA, 8/8)
Refugees on cars and trucks on the move. Krajina Serb soldier SOT (Serbo-Croat): We left three days ago from Krajina; we have not eaten anything; we stopped to drink water and jets coming from the direction of Zagreb flew over us, and on its way back dropped grenades on
us...my wife and brother-in-law were among those killed in the attack. My two sons were wounded but they were alive. GVs of area where attack happened. Baseball cap on ground. GVs damaged car parts. CROATIA: CONTROVERSY OVER ARCHBISHOP DUE TO BE BLESSED BY POPE
Serbo-Croat/Nat
Controversy surrounds the legacy of a Catholic archbishop due to be blessed by Pope John Paul II during a visit to Croatia later this week.
The blessing of the late cardinal Alojzije Stepinac means he is on the road to sainthood.
While Croatian Catholics think that is exactly what should happen, the Jewish community believe the same man was a war criminal.
Thirty years after the death of Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac, his life and work has been singled out by the Pontiff to honor on his visit to Croatia.
His tomb inside the Zagreb cathedral is a revered sight where many Croats pray.
The Catholic church in Croatia became very strong during his time.
According to the Vatican, there is almost forty thousand pages of documents on Stepinac's holy work in Croatia.
But many Jews and Serbs don't remember him for his good works, but his alleged role in war time crimes.
The Catholic church in Croatia, dismisses these allegations.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbocroat)
All people here consider Stepinac a saint. Only few individuals worked against him and made him bad. But when these attacks were hardest, he would arise in people's hearts as a saint and sufferer.
SUPER CAPTION: Archbishop Jezerinac
An estimated fifty thousand people died in the Jasenovac detention camp set up by
Ante Pavelic during his rule of the Independent State of Croatia.
Stepinac led the church during this time as thousands of Jews and Orthodox Serbs disappeared in places like Jasenovac.
Communist partisans, who won the war in former Yugoslavia, immediately accused Stepinac of collaboration with Pavelic and the forcible baptism of non-Catholics.
Ante Pavelic, who was indicted for organising the camps, is seen in a documentary kissing the hand of Stepinac and talking to him in his office.
The Bosnian Jewish community was almost destroyed during Pavelic regime.
Many Jews feel this act by the Pope, will divide their nation.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbocroat)
It is very counterproductive if he is trying to proclaim him blessed. This is not a Jewish peoples problem, it is a Catholic peoples problem and if they can accept this then they really have a problem. This will not lead to peace and reconciliation in this country.
SUPER CAPTION: Jakob Finci, President of the Jewish Community Bosnia
The Jasenovac camp is deserted these days and a memorial monument built by the Yugoslav government marks the area.
Stepinac was sentenced by a Yugoslav court to 16 years in prison, after the war, but he served only five, and was moved in to home custody where he died in 1960.
Sisters Buonaventura and Salezia of the 'Servants of Little Jesus' Order, nursed Stepinac until he died.
They are eagerly awaiting the Pontiffs visit and will present to him a picture of Stepinac with members of their Order.
Their views on his noble role once again show how divided people in Croatia are on who Stepinac was and his legacy.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbocroat)
He was like a fort for us. He was like a fort against all our enemies.
SUPER CAPTION: Sister Buonaventura
The pope arrives in Croatia on Friday.

Most schools in Mostar have an hour interval between Croatian and Bosnian classes. But for three years now, 200 students from all former republics of Yugoslavia, and 31 other countries come to The United World College, where they are taught what headmaster Paul Regan describes as international values. Students from normal schools in Bosnia say that co-education would be unthinkable but Croatian and Bosnian best friends Mirnes and Ivan from The United World College disagree. Where I grew up, we knew nothing of each other - what is a Serb? What is a Croat? What do they think about us? Sadly, their youthful idealism is a long way away from the reality of Bosnians segregation.

Đorđe Gardašević: Constitutional Court and Referendum in Croatia (CEU Alumni Talks Croatia '15)
In recent years, Croatian citizens have tried to initiate several state referendums. These notable recourses to direct democracy have addressed various legal, political and social issues (including, for example, the constitutional definition of marriage, reform of the electoral system, ban on the “outsourcing” of public sector and reform of the referendum procedure itself). These events not only unveiled deeply embedded confrontations between social actors and state institutions, but also allowed for extremely important constitutional developments. The principal aim of the lecture is to give an insight into legal interpretations given by the Constitutional Court which, attempting to balance between competing interests has started to fill in legal gaps in legal regulation of referendum in Croatia.

3LHD Central Residences
Central Residences is a sophisticated new concept of urban luxury living, something completely new on the Croatian market of apartment housing.
The idea behind this project is to introduce a home which has both the furnishings and the services of a luxury hotel in an urban metropolis. Each unit of the Central Residencies has a view of the century-old Zagreb cathedral, with the position in the very center of the Croatian capitol, makes it the most exclusive residential building in Zagreb.
The best location in the city and the immediate vicinity of the most important city spots - Jelačić Square, Dolac Market, Ribnjak Park, Zrinjevac Park, the streets of Ilica and Gajeva - give added value to its urban character.
It is the place for people who want to live in exclusive residential premises while enjoying all the contents of an urban metropolis.
The idea was to build a home, a sanctuary from the noise of the big city, but with a contemporary feel, refined details and sophisticated ambiance. The building has been conceived as a modern residence with unique apartments and city houses.
In the best tradition of pedestrian passageways in Zagreb, this residential complex has a passageway through the whole building. It crosses the entire block from Jelačić Square, through the building of Gradski Podrum restaurant, to the streets of Cesarčeva and Kurelčeva. Inside, the main attraction is the spacious green garden in the center of the residential complex.
The courtyard garden is an interlude of greenery, the focal point of all the auxiliary contents of the building. On two levels above ground and one below ground, it is surrounded by all the contents which make the complex so exclusive.

Croatia: Only Croatian fans allowed, as Serbia lose to archrival
Emotions were running high Friday as Croatia defeated Serbia 2-0 in a highly charged World Cup-qualifying football match, the first between the two neighbours since the Balkan wars in the 1990s tore apart the former Yugoslavia.
Raucous chants of Kill a Serb! from 34,000 fans known as the 'Vatreni,' or 'Fiery Ones', packing Zagreb's Maksimir Stadium provided a hostile environment for the visitors, whose fans were banned from attending the match in an effort by authorities to prevent violence.
