Ban Kwan Chang - the best elephant trek in Koh Chang, Thailand
We were picked up from Siam Beach Resort after paying our 900B for a two-hour experience. Unless you are absolutely strapped for cash then don't feel that the cheaper one-hour trek is a good idea. Missing the swimming/washing bit is something you will regret!
It's a longish drive up to the camp, but it's great joy is that it is deep in the jungle -- not just a walk along the side of the road.
Everything you read about how well the staff at Ban Kwan Chang treat their elephants seems to be true. There are a couple of other treks available -- but this is the one everyone recommends.
This was underlined just after we finished our two-hour swim'n'trek when our hotel manager told us that in the green season the elephants at Ban Kwan Chang are simply allowed to roam in the jungle.
This sounds incredibly elephant-friendly, and for the whole time we were there we never saw anything that looked even vaguely like harsh behaviour from the handlers.
Our 'driver' did have a metal hook on the end of a stick, but it spent most of it's time dangling elegantly from the elephant's ear, and when he did give her a tap it wouldn't have been anything more than the gentlest of prods to keep her attention focused.
Don't worry about 'sensible shoes' -- flip-flops are all you need as the river is fine to wade around in...and you'll quickly be on an elephant's back anyway. And as most of the day is spent under the cover of jungle trees you don't have to be too concerned about the strength of the sun either.
Once you arrive you'll get a plate of fruit and a bottle of water and you have ten minutes to look around the camp and see some of the 'naughty' elephants at play.
Then it's a short ten-minute walk down to the watering hole where there is plenty of time for everyone to get in and splash around with a couple of well-behaved gentle giants.
Once they are getting ready to go back then don't be shy is you are asked to climb aboard. Four lucky people may get to ride bareback all the way back to the camp!
The second hour is spent in pairs on gondola-chairs strapped to the backs of half-a-dozen of so of these magnificent animals.
Take a camera with you and about half way round your handler/driver will be happy to put your mount onto cruise control. He'll then snap away so you have loads of memories to take home with you. This will cost you a 'voluntary' 200B extra, but it's well worth it.
For the last section you can take it in turns to leave the seat and ride on your elephant's neck. A truly amazing feeling! (Or 'awesome' if you're from the US of A).
Right at the end you get to feed small bananas to the eagerly waving trunks of the patient and friendly creatures that -- it is quite clear -- have probably enjoyed the whole experience almost as much as you have.
Would we do this again? Every day given the chance!!
