???????? Kidnapping Route 4005: Checkpoint at Doi Ang Khang, Chiang Mai
Kidnapping Route 4050 near Ban Nor Lae, Thai / Burma border. It is a short cut to Doi Ang Khang if coming from Fang. From pictured checkpoint to another in Ban Nor Lae which is roughly 5km's away, there is a stretch claimed by both countries, off-limits to everyone except locals from both sides living in disputed area. I knew about this in advance but had to try my luck anyway. Area is notorious for kidnapping by Burmese soldiers and bandits. Ransom fees range up to 2 million baht, that's what outpost commanding officer told us. Nevertheless, it is a awesome ride to this point, you should try sometime. Make sure to give pack of cigarettes to soldiers, they are highly appreciative.

Worlds steepest climb - Doi Ang Khang Thailand VLOG
In October 2016 we ventured on a 600 km ride between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, on the return we decided to challenge ourselves with Doi Ang Khang.
This is billed as one of the steepest climbs in the world, rising 1200 meters in a little over 7 km, with gradients between 15 - 30 % the average.
This Vlog covers our day.

Hill tribe villages in Doi Angkhang, Chiang Mai
'Doi Angkhang' is a remote and mountainous area in Chiang Mai province that borders Myanmar. This mountain settlement is home to hill tribes who still live very traditionally. We visit Palong and lahu hill tribe villages and see how the women still weave cotton using backstrap looms and men weave bamboo baskets. In other developed villages, it is not easy to find hill tribes still making these indigenous handicrafts as part of everyday life.
As we are friends with the locals they welcome us into their homes. Their houses are still made of bamboo and straw, unlike more modern hill tribe homes which are now made of teak wood or concrete.
Doi Angkhang is also home to one of the Royal Agricultural project centres which helped hill tribe farmers to cease growing opium and to grow other cash crops instead (such as strawberries which grow well in the cooler climate of the highlands). The centre also educates farmers on organic and sustainable farming methods.
