West Bay Beach in Roatan, Honduras
West Bay Beach in Roatan, Honduras
West Bay is a bay in Honduras. It is located in Roatan, the biggest of the Bay Islands of Honduras.
West Bay is located in the west side of Roatan, Honduras, making it part of the biggest Bay Island in Honduras. West bay and West End are often confused by the similarity of their names, but they are two totally different things. West End is a paved road lined with shops and small hotels, while West Bay is a larger area consisting of West Bay Beach.
West Bay beach is a white sand beach and is surrounded by the second largest reef barrier in the world. In October 2011, The Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine made a top 5 of the best beaches in the world for snorkeling in this top 5, the magazine ranked West Bay as the fourth best beach for doing this activity. The Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine said: “Divers adore Roatan. but snorkelers will find plenty to love off this sweet stretch of sand on the island's west coast, courtesy of a vast and thriving reef that's an easy swim from the beach.” In 2016 the tourism page Trip Advisor held an international contest of the 25 best beaches of the world, in which West Bay placed 9th worldwide and 1st place in Central America. CNN in Spanish published this list of beaches as part of their travel section. In 2015, West Bay Beach appeared in 15th place, in a contest considers based on users reviews of beaches.
One of the biggest attractions of West Bay is the boat The Coral Reef Explorer, which is specially designed for the reef systems of the Bay Islands. It is one of the most popular attractions of West Bay and allows tourists to view the entire reef via submerged glass windows.
Each May, Roatan’s West Bay Beach hosts an international freediving competition, bringing together the world’s most competitive for the Caribbean Cup. West Bay has taken advantage of the popularity of freediving and has attracted competitors from worldwide. This has led to an increase in Roatan's tourism. The water of West Bay Beach boasts extensive visibility and calm conditions making it ideal for comfortable freediving.
West Bay Beach is located on the western most part of Roatan. It is no wonder Lonely Planet described it as “pitch perfect” (2010). The moment you set your eyes on this magnificent strip of sandy bliss, you, like many others, will fall in love.
West Bay is what many consider the picture-perfect Caribbean destination: white sand, clear, calm waters and full service resorts. The variety of water activities include scuba diving, fishing charters, snorkeling and parasailing. Scuba diving and other outfitters leave directly from the beach so starting your water-based activities is easy and convenient. Water taxis connect West Bay Beach with West End Village during daylight hours.
On days when multiple cruise ships are in port, West Bay Beach can become busy yet there are always less travelled parts of this stretch of paradise so don’t be afraid to explore a little. Cruise ship day trippers tend to congregate in front of the main resort areas so venturing further to either ends of the beach usually afford a quieter, less visited experience.
The evenings in West Bay Beach are calm, relaxing and tranquil. Spectacular sunsets are common and because Roatan sits at 16 degrees latitude, sunset times vary by only about one hour throughout the year. There are several restaurants offering a variety of menus and experiences from casual to fine dining as well as lounges where you can find your favorite tropical drink or glass of wine. While West End Village, ten minutes away by car, is a hub of nightlife activity; West Bay Beach maintains a more family-friendly, slower-paced atmosphere.

Hermit Crab Race!!! - West Bay Beach of Roatan - Bananarama Pizza + Movie on the Beach + Crab Race
If you are on the West end on Monday night you MUST go to Bananarama! So fun & all proceeds from the race, go to fight AIDS.
We are staying at Caribe Tesoro, which is on the far North side of West Bay Beach in Roatan. About 2/3 of the way toward the South side of the beach, right at the turn off for the West Bay Mall, is a Restaurant called Bananarama. They have the best Pizza in West Bay (if not all of Roatan), and on Monday nights it’s buy one get one free! Also on Monday nights, they show two movies (one children’s movie & one adult movie), and have a Hermit Crab race.
We were on the West end of Roatan for a full Month, and I don’t think we let a single Monday night go by, without enjoying this unique Island experience. Also, if you get a chance to meet the owner Guy St.Louis, take it. He is an amazing guy, with a huge heart, and honestly I think Hanora likes him better than me!
One thing that really surprised us about our stay on Roatan, was just how expensive food was. It makes sense that it would be expensive, since Roatan is an island & everything needs to be shipped in, but it still caught us off guard.
If you want to eat cheap in Roatan, you will need to eat the way the locals do: a lot of rice & beans, fish, fruit, and if you eat out it is rarely somewhere other than a Petrosun Baleada or Pastelito. A single large bag of shredded cheese was $28 USD, and don't even get be started on the American brands of stacks.
So Monday nights were always a treat for us, since we got to go out & eat at a quality restaurant, without breaking the bank too bad. Bananarama has some of the best food on West Bay, and it's prices are... competitive, but still too high for us to eat at normally. But every Monday when they are 2 for 1, they are a pretty darn good deal.
Even when we were on the East End of Roatan, during the second half or our trip, we would generally try to make it to West Bay every Monday Night for the Pizza and Movie on the beach. They also have Hermit Crab races, and there is a desert snack shack on the left that is amazing. All proceeds from the Hermit Crab races, and the snack shack, go to fight AIDS.
This night we started out watching Dr Strange which is one of the kids favorite Marvel Movies, however (understandably) one of the other patrons at Bananarama objected to the be-heading early on in the movie, so we ended up watching Moana... which is also a family favorite.
Movies are an interesting thing in Roatan. They don't have a theater anywhere that I saw, but they have roadside markets, where they sale all the new releases, and some classics for $1-$2 a piece. They are all the bootleg quality that you would expect at that rate, but I was amazed how quickly they had the DVD's ready. Sometimes they would seem to have the DVD for sale, before the movie even hit theaters! The best place to get movies seemed to be just outside Plaza Mar, above Eldon's in Coxen Hole.
Regarding Pizza in Roatan, Pizza Inn also definitely deserves an honorable mention. There are a few of them around Roatan, one in Coxen Hole, one on the West End, and one on the East End by French Harbor. They all share a location with Bojangles, which also has the best Chicken & Biscuits on Roatan, so if you go there, you are sure to get something amazing.
Their crust is especially good, and they have some great cinnamon roll bites, which were amazing. But the price to feed a family 11 is just too much to go more than once a month. So it was a rare treat that we went there.
Really the biggest staples of our diets while we were in Roatan was the Baleada's and Pastelito's, Eldon's Supermarket Lunch Line, and of course the Ice'd Mocha's from E-Coffee. Pretty much 99% of the time we ate out, those are the things we were eating.
Another food item we all really miss is the fresh fruit. Alaska has a lot of things, but good fresh fruit isn't one of them. We do have good berries.... we are killing it in the berry department, but if you want good Banana's or Mango's you are out of luck.
One of our first stops when we arrived in Roatan was a little fruit stand in Coxen Hole, where we loaded up on Lychee Fruit. They are these red-ish spikey balls that have a white fleshy inside, which made the kids think of gummies. It was a favorite snack of theirs when we first arrived.
By they time we left they were going out of season, but we were comforted by the fact that it was then Mango Season in Roatan!!! There are few things more delicious than fresh ripe Mango's & Vanilla Ice Cream. Pineapple was another one of our favorite fruits. We brought our own pineapple coring device, that made them really easy to eat. And after we pulled out all the pineapple, we were left with a very convenient Pineapple bowl... ideal for holding ice cream topped with the pineapple chunks which we had just extracted. :)
Food in Roatan is great, but expensive. So you have to take advantage of deals like Monday night pizza!!!

Coxen Hole, the largest city on the island of Roatan, a department in Honduras. The city was founded in 1835 when pirates moved to Roatan from the Cayman Islands. The city is named after pirate captain John Coxen and was home to over 5,000 pirates.
After breakfast we went for a walk in town before it got too hot.
First we had to pass all the taxi drivers offering islands tours. From the port we walked half a mile along the Main Street. Very picturesque, but also impoverished.
