A living cultural landscape is nestled into the remote slopes of the Cordillera mountain range in the Philippines. It serves as an example of sustainable agriculture with traditional techniques. For 2,000 years the mountains of Ifugao province have been cultivated with terraced fields that climb thousands of feet.
These fields, and the knowledge to farm them, have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. They have long been central to the survival of the Ifugao peoples but they also occupy a central importance within their culture. Entire communities cooperate on seasonal systems of planting, pest control, and harvest. The coordinated efforts are tied to lunar cycles and sometimes accompanied with religious rituals.
The UNESCO site encompasses five different clusters of rice terraces in the area. The Banaue Rice Terraces are the most famous of the lot. Banaue is approximately 230 miles north of Manila, and buses depart daily from the capital. It can take up to ten hours to make it up the mountainous terrain to the rice fields.
Take a guided hiking tour and make sure to pack a picnic for an outstanding view of this remarkable landscape.

Most Underrated Place in the Philippines | Batad Rice Terrace Hike
I think we have found the most underrated place in the Philippines!
Yesterday we left Manila and headed to Northern Philippines as arrived in Benaue to begin our three day hike to the Batad Rice Terraces.
This jaw dropping and bucket list spot must be done and seen to be believed. Day 1 we headed on our 7km hike to the small village of Cambulu where we stayed with the locals so we could get a better understanding of the Filipino culture.
The next day we woke up bright and early to continue our hike onto the Batad village situated the UNESCO world heritage rice terrace fields that are over 2000 years old.
Seriously up there with Macchu Picchu - do this asap!

Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras: Batad, Bangaan and Banaue in 4K Ultra HD
Possibly the oldest and some of the most beautiful Rice Terraces in the world are in the Philippine Cordilleras, they are known as Iffugao Rice Terraces or Banaue Rice Terraces. After the night bus to Banaue, we arranged to go to the incredible Batad Rice Terraces, where we made a friend in a nice man called Vincent who guided us around. We saw the incredible scenery and I took a dip in the pool of the waterfall!

Rice Terraces in Banaue - Pristine Philippines Vol.1
The Ifugao Rice Terraces in Banaue are sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World by Filipinos.
This is for good reason, as the terraces are an incredible and breathtaking site. It's pretty hard to wrap your head around the amount of work that must have went into building these by indigenous people with minimal equipment, largely by hand.
This film was shot at the Batad Rice Terraces and the Banaue Rice Terraces in Northern Luzon in the Philippines by Joerg Daiber.

Aerial movie shot with Mavic at Batad, one of the worlds most beautiful rice terraces. I dedicated 11 days to this top location in the Philippines. Didn’t plan it like that, but since mother nature didn’t cooperate, having to deal with 4 brownouts of 1-2 days each and then having my drone land by itself on the edge of rice field and drying 3 days in a bag of dry rice, it all took a bit longer to capture the footage I was after. Nevertheless I had a wicked time and shot tons of photos and timelapses. Don’t miss the timelapse movie!
