Soller, Mallorca - 5th August, 2011
Sóller is a town and municipality near the north west coast of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands of Spain. The town is some 3km inland, from the Port de Sóller, in a large, bowl-shaped valley that also includes the village of Fornalutx and the hamlets of Biniaraix and Binibassi. The combined population is around 13,000. A famous tramway, the Orange Express links Sóller to Port de Sóller.
Sóller is linked by the historic railway, the Ferrocarril de Sóller, and by a highway with a toll tunnel, to the Majorcan capital of Palma. The Andratx-Pollença highway also runs through the valley. The Ferrocaril was completed in 1911 after work began on the profits of the orange and lemon trade.

The present-day economy is based mainly on tourism and foreign residents, complementary to the agricultural economy based around citrus and olive groves, which has, in recent years, suffered from low prices.
The focus of the town is the Plaça Constitució which is surrounded by cafés and has plane trees and a fountain in its centre. The tram passes through the Plaça on its way to and from the main station which has been restored to incorporate a museum of Picasso and Joan Miró. The church of Sant Bartomeu (Saint Bartholomew) facing the east side of the Plaça is flanked by the ajuntament (town hall) and the Banco de Sóller, a remarkable 1912 Modernista building with defining ironwork, by the Catalanarchitect Joan Rubió i Bellver, a follower of Antoni Gaudí.

Modernist Art - 4 Architecture: France, Italy, Spain and Latin America
Fourth video about the Modernist Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message.
Historia del Arte:
Land of the Art:
Modernism is born by inspiration in forms of nature. In 1890-1910, the bourgeoisie was enriched and wanted pleasure. There were two styles: geometric style and ornamental style (with curved lines). Other names are Art Nouveau (France and Belgium), Modern Style (England), Jugendstil (Germany and North Countries), Sezession (Austria), Nieuwe Kunst (Netherlands), and Liberty (Italy). It is a new art that wants to be young, free and modern, to break with the dominant styles of that time, with both the academicists (historicism and eclecticism) and rupturists (realism and impressionism).
The architecture of modernism uses the solutions given by the iron and crystal revolution. Curved forms and inspiration in nature.
France: known as Art Nouveau.
Hector Guimard: he uses iron as decorative element. Castel Béranger, Subway station in Paris
Paris 1900 Exposition universelle: this exhibition marked the Art Nouveau. Over 50 million visitors from around the world came here, and showed many artistic manifestations. Each country had its pavilion. Exposition universelle, Bigot Pavilion (with ceramics of Alexandre Bigot), Austria Pavilion, Germany Pavilion

Le Train bleu restorant
Others: Lavirotte building by Jules Lavirotte, Société générale by Jacques Hermant, Department Store Galeries Lafayette
Italy: known as Stile Liberty. The name is taking from the british great store Liberty, whose colorful textile manifestations were very popular in Italy.
Teatro Massimo of Palermo: by Ernesto Basile, it combines elements of Art Nouveau and classical (3 images)
Galileo Chini: he is mostly known by his ceramics and by his designs for sets of Puccini operas. Ceramics (5 images)
Carlo Bugatti: he is known by his mobiliary design (4 images)
Spain: known as Modernismo.
Zaragoza: Quisco de la Música, Mercado Central
Catalan architects: the examples showed here are the University of Barcelona by Elies Rogent i Amat, Casa de les Punxes by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Banco de Sóller (Mallorca) by Joan Rubió i Bellver, Torre de la Creu by Josep Maria Jujol i Gibert, Casa Comalat by Salvador Valeri i Pupurull, and Masía Freixa by Lluís Muncunill i Parellada
Antoni Gaudi: he is the most important spanish architect. His masterpiece is the Sagrada Familia, still in construction. It is a mix of gothic and modernism (5 images). Other of his artworks are the Casa Battló (3 images), and the Casa Millà (2 images)
Palau de la Música Catalana: by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, the best is the interior
Portugal: just to mention the Livraria Lello in Porto
Latin America: modernism was not very developed due to the high cost. But there are good examples in Argentina mainly.
Jugendstil influence: Edificio Otto Wulff, Palacio Vera by Oskar Ranzenhofer

Director: Pedro Victory
Autor: Klaus Hillebrecht
