Bandhavgarh Ancient Caves - Madhya Pradesh
A walk inside the ancient caves of Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh, India.
There are 39 caves in the bandhavgarh forts hill and in surrounding hillocks of about 5 kms.The oldest caves appear to be as ancient as the first century A.D.
Serveral caves carry inscription in brshmi scrript. some caves also have emboosed figures such as those of tiger, pig, elephent and horsemen. Badi gufa, the largest of the caves with a broad entrance, has nine small rooms and several pillars. It has been dated back to the 10th century AD. it is spacious and has adequate vertical room for a person of average height to stand and walk. It is visible from the fort, which porbably signifies its strategic location. The cave appears to be primitive , lacking the elaborate statues and carvings seen in the caves of the buddhist period. Its purpose remains a mystery, although initially it could have been used by monks for spiritual pursuits and later by the army for strategic purposes. At present, most of the caves are beging used by wildlife - bats to tigers.

Driving towards Bandhavgarh caves
Driving through the forest of Bandhavgarh National Park towards the ancient caves of Bandhavgarh.
The Bandhavgarh Ancient Caves are built on the sand-stone hillocks of Bandhavgarh Hill. Around 39 caves in the region, which cover a length of about 5 km form these caves. You can notice several caves carry inscriptions of the Brahmi script and some of these caves also have embossed figures of tiger, pig, elephant and horsemen. The Badi Gufa literally means ‘Biggest Cave.
This is one of the oldest caves and is dated back to the 10th century. The cave comprises of numerous pillars and nine big rooms. These caves are primitive in nature and lack the elaborate statues and carvings. No one really knows the purpose of these caves, and it still remains a mystery. One of the theories is that this could have been utilised by monks for spiritual pursuits and later by the army for strategic purposes.
As of now, these caves shelter the varied wildlife like tigers, bats and other fauna of the Bandhavgarh National Park.

Bandhavgarh National Park : Tigress Tara with two cubs : May 2019
Bandhavgarh National Park is the best park to spot a Tiger in the wild in India. Located in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, the park was a Shikargah, or game preserve for the Maharajas of Rewa and their guests. The park was declared a National Park in 1968 and a Tiger Reserve in 1972 under the Project Tiger and Wildlife Protection Act.
The historical links of Bandhavgarh are to be found in India’s worshipped mythological heroes Rama and Laxmana. The name “bandhav-garh” translates to “the brother’s fort” and believed to be gifted by Hindu God Rama to his devoted ‘bandhav’ (brother) Laxmana on his return from victory over Lanka (Ceylon). Inside the park there are 12 natural waterholes, several other historical monuments and remains of ancient caves that exhibit a 2000 year old rich historical past.
Other than Tigers and Leopards the mixed vegetation of Sal and Savannahs makes Bandhavgarh an abode of Spotted Deer, Sambhar Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Indian Gaur and Jackal among its 22 species of mammals and around 220 species of birds.

Shesh Shaiya, an idol of Lord Vishnu, is the originating point of River Charanganga. Having a length of 65 ft, it is laid horizontally on the serpent, which has seven heads and is considered very old in terms of architecture. The seven hooded serpent is called Shesh Naga.
Owing to the presence of many fruit bearing trees in the vicinity, the place is visited by many birds like Malabar pied hornbill. This place is frequented by many devotees at the time of Diwali, when the idol of Lord Vishnu is embellished with many lamps.
Shesh Shaiya
Description
Introduction
It is the famous statue, present inside the Tala zone of Bandhavgarh. Shesh Shaiya is on the half-way up the Bandhavgarh hill, in amidst of shady evergreen trees. When you got the chance to visit Bandhavgarh, you will pass through this famous spot. It is 12 meter long reclining statue of Lord Vishnu, one of the Hindu trinity of lords i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh or Shiva. It is a single sandstone rock-carved statue in which we can see that Lord Vishnu, Seven-hooded Serpent King Sheshnaag and Shiva linga. Here we will also se the origin of Charanganga river from legside of Vishnu statue. Due to origin of water source, here we will also see a evergreen water pool which ensures water availability at this height. Now a days, it is not so easy to visit this point as Fort safari is closed for visitors, as per rule of Forest Department. It is a historic statue of Kalchuri period thus it has great historic importance.
Sheshsaiya
It is a 35 Feet long statue of Lord Vishnu, Sheshnaag & Shiva Linga. All this is carves out of single sand-stone. During rule of Kalchuri dynasty, in 10th century, this statue was carved out during Kalchuri ruler Yuvrajdev reign. Before Baghel, this region was under rule of Kalchuri dynasty. It was the minister Gollak who initiated the work and offered this masterpiece to his king. On reaching top of the hill, we will find many statues of Lord Vishnu in different incarnations which were carved out in 10th & 11th centuries. Here at Sheshsaiya we can find statue of Lord Vishnu, sleeping under the shade of 7-hooded serpent called Sheshnaag and his bed was floats-coil of same snake-king. In Hindu mythology, Shesh Naag is also one of the god. So its name Shesh-saiya means Bed of Sheshnaag. It is the point of origin for Charanganga river which is a evergreen perennial ensuring water availability to large part of this forest. While going to Tala entrance gate, we cross over a narrow perennial. It is the same Charanganga river. Here at Shesh Saiya, we may find tiger presence as it is popular water hole so many times tigers have been spotted at this spot and captures in camera also. If you are visiting Bandhavgarh, then I will recommend you to visit this beautiful spot.

Bandhavgarh buffer zone area - MP
Taking a night safari trip to Bandhavgarh buffer zone, Madhya Pradesh.
Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the popular national parks in India located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh was declared a national park in 1968, with an area of 105 km². The buffer is spread over the forest divisions of Umaria and Katni and totals 437 km². The park derives its name from the most prominent hillock of the area, which is said to be given by Hindu Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana to keep a watch on Lanka (Ceylon). Hence the name Bandhavgarh (Sanskrit: Brother's Fort).
This park has a large biodiversity. The density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh is one of the highest known in India. The park has a large breeding population of leopards, and various species of deer. Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa captured the first white tiger in this region in 1951. This white tiger, Mohan, is now stuffed and on display in the palace of the Maharajas of Rewa. Historically villagers and their cattle have been a threat to the tiger. Rising mining activities around the park are putting the tigers at risk.

Bandhavgarh and Tiger Temple Part5.flv
The Bandhavgarh National Park is the place where the famous white tigers of Rewa were discovered. The last known capture of the white tiger was in1951. He is believed to have fathered many a cub in Indian zoos and outside.
'Mohan' is now stuffed and on display in the palace of of the Maharaja of Rewa.
When Mohan reached adulthood, he was bred to a normal tiger named Begum. They produced three litters of cubs, but none of them were white. When Mohan was bred to one of his own daughters from the second litter however, four white cubs were born. One of these white cubs was named Mohini who was then bred to her uncle/half-brother Sampson and two of their offspring were sent to the National Zoo in Washington D.C. where they were bred to each other and produced, among other cubs, Kesari who was the foundation for the Cincinnati Zoo's line of white tigers....and this way the lineage continued.
