The 1.5 km long Bang Wad Dam has created the largest reservoir to distribute water to Phuket businesses and households. This dam is located in Kathu, and as well supplying water is also used to control water levels to stop floods and also to store water during dry periods. It is also a public park for local Phuketian people, many who like to take some form of exercise around the 6 km circumference of this reservoir or to relax with family and friends. The dam is reached by driving through the 18-hole Phuket Country Club golf course.

Reservoir Dries Up As Popular Thai Tourist Resort

Footage shows how reservoirs in southern Thailand are running dangerously low with the region being hit by a crippling water shortage crisis. Soaring temperatures reaching 40C and a lack of rain - made worse by El Nino warm phase - have caused households and businesses in tourist hotspot Phuket to suffer a shortage of ta water. Officials said that many had taps had run dry or were experiencing inconsistent flows of water. They have now implemented drought-tackling measures such as monitoring usage and were considering rationing.

Intro: The fresh and shady area surrounding the reservoir at Bang Wad Dam adds charisma to the place to be more than just a reservoir. How is that? Our reporter has more details.

Tape: Towering trees and greenery of fertile forests within the 93 rai of Bang Wad Dam in Phukets Kathu district has become a favourite attraction for residents. They use it as a recreational location and exercise like jogging, mostly in the early evening.
Everyday, the area is visited by health enthusiasts who usually jog or take a stroll along the dam. They say its a perfect location with trees and they enjoy the pleasant scene of clean water.

A boy said - I come to jog everyday. It has plenty of space.

Located in Kathu accessible by driving through the Phuket Country Club Golf Course, Bang Wad Dam reservoir is Phuket's largest water supply. Its quiet during the day time, but in late afternoon, people usually come out to exercise, and ride bicycles, have a picnic or let their children run around.
Sometimes, the area is used as a fun-run location for various organizations including schools as it has such an attractive route, a circuit of around 6 kilometers to complete the run amidst natural greenery to finish by the top of the dams water.
The dam is 902 metres wide and has a carrying capacity of 8.5 million cubic metres. It supplies raw water to the Office of Phuket Citys water supply work and the provincial Water Works. In the future, the Phuket Irrigation Office has a plan to redevelop and improve the area and facilities around the dam such as having a view point pavilion built, building parking lots, toilets, showers and changing rooms as well as develop the exercise facilities. It also plans to boost the area around the reservoir as another recreational location for Phuket.

(Phuket) Chalong new dam

PHUKET: Work on Phuket's third major reservoir is behind schedule, but officials expect the Klong Krata project in Chalong to be completed on schedule by January next year.

Project engineer Nattakom Nookhom of the Region 15 Irrigation Office in Surat Thani said rain has put the work significantly behind schedule.

According to the work schedule we should be near the half way mark, but actual construction is only at 39% due to intermittent rain, which continues to slow the excavation and grouting work now underway, he said.

Anyway, we try to work as quickly as possible to complete the project by scheduled completion date and I am sure we will do it in time, he said.

The construction contract is for 900 days, from August 10, 2010 to January 25, 2012.

The project, with a 449-million-baht budget from the Irrigation Department, comprises a earthen and rock dam 23 meters high and 927 meters across, a spillway, control room and other facilities.

Upon completion, the reservoir should be able to store about 4.1 million cubic meters of water. It will also be the first Irrigation Department reservoir in Muang District. Phuket's two existing large reservoirs are located in Kathu (Bangwad Reservoir) and Thalang (Bang Neaw Dum Reservoir).

The Provincial Water Authority hopes to eventually connect all three supply sources through a network of pipes in order to improve service in the areas under its jurisdiction, a consultant hired by the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization told the Gazette.

Bang Wad dam is Phuket’s largest reservoir, located in the hills to the west of Phuket Town. This earthen dam is 887 meters long and 24-meter height, holding 8.5 billion cubic meters of water capacity. It was built mainly for water supply to the Phuket downtown.
This place opens for visitor around 9 o’clock in the morning but people usually come here in the late afternoon to exercise and picnic. Although, the cars are not allowed to run on the top of the dam. However, a lot of people are free to jog and ride bikes on it. There's lots of space by the both end of the dam, one the right side of the dam (when facing out) is the best point to see the sunset and take a chill-out walk around the small park where there is open ground for kids to run around and play on some big rocks. There are snacks and drinks selling by the mobile stalls. It is the perfect place for family’s picnic in the weekend. There is the small tarmac road with bike lane run through the greenness around the reservoir (a circuit of about 5.5 km) for some keen joggers and bike lovers. Several stops can be made at the small roadside waterfalls run down from the hills to fill up the catchment.
