Bankhead, Alberta - Ghost Town of Canada
Bankhead is a famous ghost town in Banff National Park in Alberta, Western Canada. Bankhead was previously a successful coal mining town. Between 1904 and 1922, it was the site of a modern, world-class coal mining operation.
However, substandard living conditions led to striking miners, the longest of which lasted eight months. Eventually the mine became unprofitable. In 1930, Canada forbid all minig of coal in its National Parks. The mine eventually shut down, and today Bankhead is a common stop for tourists.
Today, an interpretive trail runs through Lower Bankhead. Signs are placed along the trail identifying the major buildings, as well as other interesting facts. Many foundations of buildings are visible. One building remains intact and contains displays viewed through the windows. Remains of the town are also visible adjacent to the Upper Bankhead parking lot.

Lower Bankhead | Ghost Town | Banff National Park
Bankhead is a ghost town on the flank of Cascade Mountain south of Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.
Between 1904 and 1922, it was the site of a modern, world-class coal mining operation. Keep in mind, Banff National Park became Canada's first National Park in 1885.
Lower Bankhead contained the industrial component with most of the residential area above in Upper Bankhead.
Abandoned and Deserted | Ep.2 | Bankhead Ghost Town (ABANDONED Coal Mining Town!)
I explore the Bankhead Coal Mining Ghost Town in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.
Operated between 1903 and 1922 and was the first anthracite mining operation in Canada.
The mine had a population of about 1,000 people with 275 of them working in the underground mines while 155 workers were tasked with overseeing things on the surface.
On average, the mine used to produce between 500 and 600 tons of coal every day.
Times started to get tough at the mine in 1922. Disgruntled workers and several strikes along with competition from other mines led to it being unprofitable and ultimately led to abandonment.
Take a step back in time to this fascinating location in Alberta history.

Nordegg to Banff National Park Road Trip | Journey Alberta
In this video I journey from Nordegg to Banff National Park, stopping at a bunch of roadside turnoffs to take in the sights along this scenic area. First, I go to Crescent Falls, close to Nordegg, and admire the large waterfall. From there we head down the David Thompson Highway past Abraham Lake where we stop to admire this big body of water. Next we enter Banff National Park, and stop at one of the Waterfowl Lakes. Afterwards we move further down the Icefields Parkway Highway and see Peyto Lake and Bow Lake. Our last stop along the highway is at the viewpoint for the Crowfoot Glacier!

GHOST TOWN VIDEO TOUR: NEMISCAM, ALBERTA | Urbex | Abandoned Places | Gravel Travel
Nemiscam is a Southern Alberta Ghost Town, originally known as Bingham and then changing to Nemiskam (meaning between two valleys). Located near Foremost and Etzikom on Hwy 61, the town peaked at a population of 54 residents in the 1960's, with now only a few buildings left, not including the four grain elevators which were demolished in the early 1990's. The current spelling of the town's name uses a 'C' in place of the original 'K', as is reflected on the gates of the town's sparsely populated grave-site.
5 Extremely Strange Places in Canada
5 Extremely Strange Places in Canada
As the world’s second largest country by total area, Canada has all the beautiful landscapes and unique attractions for people to visit. But there’s more to the Niagara Falls, Banff National Park & the Rocky Mountains, Whistler Ski Resort and other popular frequented sites. These 5 strange places in Canada are worth exploring too for their interesting history and mysterious tales of existence.
5. Alticane’s Twisted Trees
Aspen trees are native to cold regions with cold summers in the Northern Hemisphere, and are known for their tall and straight appearance. But in the Alticane community in Saskatchewan, Canada, the grove of aspen trees are twisted, crooked and deformed making them dramatically different from the normal aspens across the road. They give off an eerie vibe because they’re so knotted and bent which can be likened to the curled legs of dead, overturned spiders.
4. Bayer’s Lake Mystery Walls
The Bayer’s Lake mystery walls in the Canadian province Nova Scotia have been presumed to be a sheep’s pen, a site for military exercises, or a fort for defense during the 1812 war. But archaeologists and historians have been in a quandary as to the origin of the historic site that was lost until its public rediscovery in 1990.
3. Spotted Lake
Have you seen a lake that visually turns into a body of water with leopard-like prints at a glance during the summer? In fact, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aptly terms it as “The most magical place in Canada.” It’s the Spotted Lake located northwest of Osoyoos in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley which looks like any river but transforms magically during the summer. When the water evaporates, hundreds of huge briny pools are left behind, leaving a polka-dot landscape of yellow, green and blue spots. Wonder how the spots are formed?
2. Screaming Tunnel
For the toughies who love the surge of adrenaline stimulated by horrifying stories about a place’s past, the Screaming Tunnel in Ontario, Canada is a must-go-to-place. It’s an arched limestone tunnel 16 feet tall and 125 feet long constructed in early 1800s running underneath the Canadian National Railways in the northwest corner of Niagara Falls.
1. The Oak Island money pit
The 57-hectare Oak Island on the south shore of Nova Scotia in Canada may be small in size, but tales of treasures and unexplained objects buried in the island make it a huge attraction to treasure hunters since 1795.
Ghost Town of Upper Bankhead in the Rain
On a summer morning bike ride to Lake Minnewanka and exploring the ruins of the Ghost Town of Upper Bankhead when I was caught in a thunder shower. A short video of the rain, picnic area, shelter and parking lot at Bankhead/Cascade Valley outside of Banff, Alberta.
Photographing Rowley, Alberta's Famous Rural Ghost Town
In this episode I take you to the ghost town of Rowley in Alberta. I was hoping to do some daytime long exposure photographs, but the clouds and rain just didn't cooperate. Getting rained out is never the way I want things to end, but thats how it goes sometimes. Next time!

ABANDONED COAL TOWN in ALBERTA
In Episode 4 we take the family out to Bankhead, #Alberta to learn about an abandoned coal town and to take on some #hiking trails within the town with the kids. Located just 5 minutes north of the town of #Banff Bankhead was once a prosperous coal mine town built mainly by CP Rail to take advantage of the coal rush in Alberta. The government closed the town many years ago, but some of the town and coal equipment still remains. There is so much coal in this area even the paths are made of coal!

UNFINISHED BANKHEAD JOURNEY (2017)
This is a very quick video of one of my trip at Bankhead, Alberta. Its near Banff National Park. the place is actually an abandon area. It takes 2.4 km from the picnic area to the first house. I didn't make it to the actual ghost town due to time and schedule. I definitely will come back and finish what I started.

Abandoned Hot Spring Resort. Adventure #13
My adventure starts with the exploration of a technical cave system in Jasper national park in Alberta Canada. The cave is named Disaster Point Cave and has been bottomed by very few explorers. We do reach the bottom but not without several challenges along the way. After a good sleep i leave for home in the morning. On route home i stop at an abandoned hot spring resort called Miette Aquacourt. After exploring and finding the source of the hot spring i make a couple more quick stops and its off to home.
