At Velas, turtle conservation movement is undertaken by the villagers. An NGO named Sahyadri Nisargmitra and the villagers committee has taken the initiative to conserve olive ridley turtles by providing protection to their eggs.Witnessing a baby turtle coming out of the egg and then finding its way to the sea by those baby steps is an unforgettable moment.
Harihareshwar is a town in Raigad district, in Maharashtra, India. It is surrounded by three hills named Harihareshwar, Harshinachal and Pushpadri. The river Savitri enters the Arabian Sea from the town of Harihareshwar. Towards the north of the town is the temple of Lord Harihareshwar, said to have been blessed by Lord Shiva. Hence Harihareshwar is often referred to as Dev-ghar or house of God.
Besides a major pilgrimage center, Harihareshwar is a popular beach resort with two beaches, one to the north and the other to the south of the temple. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation has a resort on the south beach. Harihareshwar, along with Shrivardhan and Diveagar Beach forms a popular weekend beach destination from Pune (190 km) and Mumbai (210 km).
The Kalbhairav Jayanti Utsav (Festival on Birthday of Deity Kalbhairav) was initiated by Mr. Yashawant Balawant Nagle who was Sardar of Queen of Janjira Administering Harihareshwar village. He donated quite a large part of his property for funding the Temple management.

Velas is located in Mandangad Taluka of Ratnagiri District 230 km away from Mumbai & 200 km away from Pune. Velas is a coastal town famous for its Beach, Harihareshwar Temple, Bankot Fort, and Turtles Festival. The festival is about witnessing the birth of the turtles, how they break the eggs and crawl their way into the ocean to start off their journey of life. This Olive Ridley Turtle festival is organized by local villagers in coordination with an NGOs named as Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra and Kasav Mitra Mandal.
The Olive Ridley turtles are sea turtles which are found in warm tropical ocean currents of Indian and Pacific oceans. Even though, they fall in the medium sized sea turtles, these turtles sighted at Velas beach every year usually weigh around 50 kg and can be more than 2 feet in length. Olive green in colour, these turtles have oar like limbs and curiously they have a nail each on the front limbs.
The hatchling Olive ridley turtles are charcoal grey with a greenish hue along their sides. They measure around 38 mm long and weigh 17g at birth.

Bankot Fort also known as Bawankot fort or Himmatgad is situated in Bankot (taluka Mandangad) in Ratnagiri district. The nearest beach to it is Velas.
The fort is in ruins but most of its structure is in good condition and has a beautiful scenic view of the sea. Vehicles can travel up to the fort.

This ferry service was started by Suvarnadurga Shipping & Marine Services Pvt. Ltd. in 2007. Till then, journey from Raigad to Ratnagiri via Mandangad was very time consuming and hectic.
There are some tourist spots at Shrivardhan such as Harihareshwar, Dive-Aagar, Borli etc. Velas beach is famous for its 'Kasav Mahotsav' (Turtle Festival). Once you are there, you have a choice visit Dapoli or Murud, Alibaug for their exotic locations.
You may arrange your tour as Veshvi - Kelshi (Mahalaxmi Temple) - Anjarle Beach - Harnai Beach - Suvarnadurga Fort - Murud (Dapoli) beach - Dapoli (Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth) - Ladghar beach - Burondi (Lord Parshuram Statue) - Kolthare Beach - Kolishwar Temple - Dabhol (Chandika Mandir). Once you are at Dabhol, you may join the Ferry Service.
Another alternative is to join 'Rohini – Agardanda' Ferry once you reach Harihareshwar. Then Shrivardhan and Divegar. From 'Rohini Ferry' you may visit Murud – Janjeera, Nandgaon, Kashid beach, Alibaug, Rewas and some other places. You can continue your journey via NH-17 also either from Shrivardhan, Mhasala or Mangaon.

Velas Turtle Festival 2017 | Bankot Fort | Harihareshwar
Velas village is famous for the Olive Ridley Turtle, which is an endangered species. Velas is a small village in Ratnagiri district, where every year the Olive Ridley turtles lay eggs. Ten years ago, before the conservation effort started, most of the Olive Ridley turtle eggs were consumed by humans, dogs and other wild animals. An NGO named Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra and the Kasav Mitra Mandal (KMM), has taken the initiative to conserve Olive Ridley turtles by providing protection to their eggs during the period of February to March. The eggs, the size of ping pong balls, are collected and incubated in a hatchery constructed on the beach by the locals. Each clutch is marked by its date and left to incubate naturally. It’s indeed a magical moment to see a baby turtle coming out of the egg and then finding its way to the sea by taking those little baby steps.
We also visited the historic Bankot Fort on a hilltop, overlooking the magnificent Bankot Bay. Like all other forts on the western coast of India it was under the control of Mughals, Portuguese, Marathas and British.
Next day, we visited the Harihareshwar Temple, a temple dedicated to the trio - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva). We did parikrama around the temple and the sight along the way was simple breathtaking! One cannot not visit these beautiful places in Maharashtra!

In today's video, I am traveling to Velas from Pune on my Bajaj V15 for the Turtle Festival which happens every year along most of the Konkan coastline. This year even Mumbai's Versova beach residents witnessed the hatchlings of Olive Ridley Turtles making it to the Arabian Sea.
In my case, we weren't lucky enough to get a single egg hatched while we were at Velas. Our trip organizer from Mumbai, Sameer Patel from Owlet Outdoors spotted a live nest laid just the night before! Check out Owlet Outdoors here -
He saw the pattern created by the crawling turtle on the beach, followed it to the nest and alerted the locals. They quickly rushed to the beach to find 146 freshly laid eggs! How cool is that?!
Sameer found the nest on the same morning we left for Velas. For the next 2 visits, we didn't get a single hatched egg. It's a great event this Turtle festival, people come in thousands from different cities all over from Western Maharashtra. Most of them are from Pune and Mumbai of course. Weekends are all packed for the turtle festival in Velas and probably most of the coastal villages. I am planning to go on a weekday just to see how things pan out.
We also went to Bankot fort which is very close to Velas and it was used as a watch post to keep an eye on the trade route. The river Savitri which comes from Mahad meets the Arabian Sea at Velas, so in those days it was a very important port and route for boats to enter in India.
We had also planned for Harihareshwar temple visit but we got so disappointed that we headed straight for Pune, plus there was a lot of crowds visiting the temple that day.

Harihareshwar temple, the main attraction of Harihareshwar apart from the Harihareshwar beach, from a tourist perspective, is quite a simple structure with traditional tiled roofing. There is a small garden on the left as one enters the temple complex. The Harihareshwar temple complex opens up to a long stretch of beach to its north where the shorter 'pradakshina marg' culminates.
Harihareshwar temple with the main dieties as Brahma Vishnu and Shiva is believed to be from the 16th century. Kuladaivat or the family deity of the Peshwas, Harihareshwar temple complex was renovated by them in 1723. The steps of the pradakshina marg around the temple was built by Chandrarao More.

Although a consistent history about Bankot or Bankot fort is still eluding us and the origin of this fort is still speculative, a brief history can still be traced about this fort. The fort was known to be under the control of Adilshahi and later in 1548, the Portuguese took control over it. Later, Marathas, under the able leadership of the great Kanhoji Angre took control over Bankot. They rechristened the fort as Himmatgad. It is a historical place because it was the first residency in the Southern part of Konkan coast of British.In the year 1756 Bankot became the part of Bombay Presidency.
