After graffiti artist Banksy visited the war torn West Bank, he left a trail of subversive street art behind. But the art world's huge demand for the works has become a new source of local conflict.
I hope that Banksy is not coming back here says Walid Zawarah, a taxi driver who first spotted a Banksy on a Bethlehem wall. The art drew on the region's conflict, and made local and international headlines. For Zawarah, the art represents a wasted financial opportunity for the local people. From the rubble of Bethlehem to the galleries of Long Island, art dealer Stephan Keszler removes, restores and then sells Banksys to a hungry art market for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Meanwhile, one Palestinian family are now fighting a legal battle after they accepted $170 for their front door, which Banksy had painted on, not realising its value was over 100 times that price. We needed every penny. We didn't know Banksy or his art.

State of Palestine: Banksy artwork depicts nativity scene under West Bank wall

Mysterious and internationally-renowned street artist Banksy unveiled a dark nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus with a different approach, as shown in footage from Sunday at Bethlehem's The Walled-Off Hotel.
Dubbed Scar of Bethlehem, the artwork shows Mary and Joseph with Baby Jesus at a manger in front of a concrete wall representing Israel's separation barrier. On the wall, a hole in the shape of a star opposes the English-written words Love and Peace at the bottom.
General Manager of The Walled Off Hotel Wisam Salsaa said Banksy's artwork is a way to highlight the current political situation in Bethlehem.
Banksy is emphasizing the situation in Palestine to remind the world that Bethlehem, where Christmas has started, is not celebrating Christmas like the rest of the world. There is something wrong happening in here, something is drowning the happiness of Christmas, and probably drowning the future of this region, he said.

The Walled Off Hotel also intentionally named as, the worst view of any hotel in the world”, by anonymous British street artist, Banksy. Not only is this a 9 room hotel but also a museum and gallery portraying the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Some rooms look out onto the wall of shame and an Israeli settlement which ironically is illegal under international law. On the upper level of the hotel features art from local Palestinian Artists. If you have stayed at the Walled Off Hotel, tell us one thing you saw that caught your eye.

Banksy In The West Bank
Banksy, the controversial and frequently hilarious graffiti artist visited the wall dividing Israel territory from Palestinian lands, and posted several pictures.
I apologise beforehand for the half-witted art critic from the Times with her puerile analogy between Blank Walls, Empty Canvasses and Red Rags to a Bull... silly cow!
Anyhow, Banksy is famed for using graffiti to highlight what he perceives are important political points and to be fair, is rarely wide of the mark. However, I think he may have overstepped the mark by referring to Palestine as being akin to Glastonbury!!
Good luck to him though, nobody could seriously argue that his art is in anyway detracting from the ugly, soulless architecture we are surrounded by.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

S4: Bethlehem | E5: Wall of Shame
Today, we are exploring the Wall of Shame that separated Bethlehem from occupied Palestine. This wall sadly split families making the opportunity to see their loved ones difficult. Artists from around the world spray painted their work onto wall including a famous satirical artist, Banksy. If you want to create a stencil of your own to spray paint on the wall, head over to our friends at Wall-Mart across the street from Walled Off Hotel. However, do not expect your artwork to stay forever. The wall must be taken down to liberate Palestine.

Tour of hotel with Banksy artwork in Bethlehem
(3 Mar 2017) A Palestinian guest house packed with artwork of elusive British graffiti artist Banksy was unveiled on Friday (3 MARCH 2017) in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, with a sneak peek of what the owner called the hotel with the worst view in the world.
Wisam Salsaa said the nine-room establishment named The Walled Off Hotel will officially open on March 11, but on Friday he offered a handful of reporters a tour of the hotel looking directly at the West Bank separation barrier erected by Israel.
The barrier is heavily decorated by artists, and Banksy has previously painted several murals on the wall.
The hotel is awash with the trademark satirical work of the mysterious artist.
The highlight is room number three, known as Banksy's Room, where guests sleep in a king-size bed underneath a Banksy artwork showing a Palestinian and an Israeli in a pillow fight.
The hotel also features a presidential suite and a museum with the artist's politically-charged work.
The cheapest rooms will be available from 30 U.S. dollars a night.
Banksy has made previous forays into the Palestinian Territories. In one secret visit, he drew a painting of a girl pulled upward by balloons on the barrier, facing his current project.
In 2016, he's believed to have sneaked into Gaza to draw four street murals, including one on a metal door that depicted the Greek goddess Niobe cowering against the rubble of a destroyed house.
The painting, entitled Bomb Damage, was drawn on the last remaining part of a two-storey house that was destroyed in the 2014 war.
The artist's satirical stencils - rats, kissing policemen, riot police with yellow smiley faces - first appeared on walls in Bristol before spreading to London and then around the world.
His artwork comments on war, child poverty and the environment.
His identity remains a mystery, but his works have fetched as much as 1.8 million U.S. dollars at auctions.

Banksy's West Bank Hotel Opens for Guests
(20 Mar 2017) The first guests started to arrive at The Walled Off Hotel on Monday in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.
The Palestinian guesthouse is packed with artwork by the elusive British graffiti artist Banksy.
The hotel looks directly out at the West Bank separation barrier erected by Israel.
The barrier, which Palestinians consider to be a land grab that stifles their movement, is heavily decorated by artists, and Banksy has previously painted several murals on a walled segment of it.
Toan Nguyen, 34, came all the way from Australia to visit and decided to book a room at the hotel.
Erik Mark, 41, is another tourist from the United States, booked with his friend the Banksy room; a room with a king-size bed underneath Banksy's artwork showing a Palestinian and an Israeli in a pillow fight.
Vicki Winters, 60, from New York tried to book a room, when the reservations went online this morning, but she said in 5 minutes the rooms were all sold out.
Banksy's artwork often comments on war, child poverty and the environment.
His identity remains a mystery, but his works have fetched as much as 1.8 million U.S. dollars at auctions.

Banksy: guerrilla art in Palestine

On Banksy's website, readers are reminded that Israel's 425-mile-long West Bank barrier, separating Israel from the Palestinian territories, is considered illegal by the United Nations.
--------------------------------
Banksy is a well-known yet pseudo-anonymous[1] English graffiti artist. It is believed that Banksy is a native of Yate (near Bristol[1]) and was born in 1974[2], but there is substantial public uncertainty about his identity and basic personal and biographical details[3]. However, according to Tristan Manco, Banksy was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier engineer, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s.[4] His artworks are often satirical pieces of art which encompass topics from politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti with a distinctive stencilling technique, has appeared in London and in cities around the world.[5]
