Wild Elephants Raid southwest China Scenic Spot, Croplands for Food
Hungry wild elephants left the jungle and wandered into scenic spots and croplands as falling temperatures saw their food supply depleted in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture of southwest China's Yunnan Province last week.
The Xishuangbanna forestry public bureau received a call that the elephants had arrived at the Wild Elephant Scenic Spot at 09:05 last Wednesday.
When police officers swiftly arrived the site, they saw five wild elephants near the north gate of the scenic spot, while one male elephant even explored the ticket checking gate and nearby stores, overturing trash cans and picking up fruit discarded by tourists, forcing people nearby to run away.
Police officers blocked the roads to prevent vehicles and pedestrians from approaching the wild elephants, while cordoned off tourists near the ticket checking gate to the nearby elephant museum and a bridge.
People were warned not to speak loudly to avoid scaring the wild elephant into attacking the tourists.
Police also kept monitoring the whereabouts of the wild elephants.
On Thursday morning, another three wild elephants went to the Wild Elephant Scenic Spot.
The eight wild animals are still staying around the scenic spot and the nearby Highway 213, where around-the-clock monitoring continues by police officers and guards of the scenic spot.
Xishuangbanna has been home to between 250 and 300 wild elephants in recent years.
Earlier on Jan. 8, eight wild elephants went to a village in Mengla County. Some even intruded the houses of villagers to eat corn, forcing the villagers to flee overnight.
(The wild elephants) came from the Longkuang (villager group) and had the bananas in our cropland for food. They ate a lot of bananas, said a local resident.

World Elephant Day: Wild Elephants Show up Frequently in Southwest China
The World Elephant Day falls on Aug 12. But it is not just this day that brings the large friendly mammals close to human beings. In southwest China's Yunnan Province, wild Asian Elephants have made their appearances on a daily basis since the Spring Festival in February.
Around the Wild Elephant Valley in the province's Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna (Sipsongpanna), the wild elephants sometimes wonder about on the street, making cars stop for them to pass.
Elephant caretaker Yan Hanlu said such frequent appearance of wild elephants in large numbers is a rare scene even in his long experience of watching elephants for over 20 years.
From the Spring Festival to May 15, the wild elephants showed up almost every day in our scenic region. The number was between 40 to 50, and can be more than 60 taking into account the ones in surrounding areas, said Yan.
Experts said the frequent appearance of wild elephants in the valley could result from a shortage in food and water supply.
The ficus elastic we grow, for example, is not a common type of food for wild elephants. But when they come here, they eat the whole trees. They even look for food in the garbage bags. The shortage of water is more obvious, as rivers are cutting off in our prefecture and water supply became a huge problem for the elephants. The elephants used to drink at the 'elephant lake' in our valley, 29 of them at a time! They also frolic in the lake. On the other hand, the elephants probably feel welcome here. The people here won't harm them. So the valley becomes their first option when they are in trouble, said Shen Qingzhong, senior engineer with the National Nature Reserve of Xishuangbanna.
In recent years, the number of wild Asian Elephants, scientifically known as elephas maximus, in China has been growing with the country's greater efforts in wildlife protection. There are currently 250 to 270 wild Asian Elephants in Xishuangbanna. More on:

About Jason Beckton, Managing Director
Mr Beckton is a professional geologist with over 17 years experience in exploration, project development, production and management both in Australia and internationally.
Mr Beckton's career began with Pancontinental and Goldfields Ltd throughout Australia from the early 1990s before moving to a senior role with Gympie Gold in 2001. Subsequently Mr Beckton was Project Manager for the Palmarejo silver gold project in Mexico and managed the program that grew the resource base from zero to 3.1 million ounces gold equivalent during 2004. More recently Mr Beckton was Manager - Chile for Exeter Resource Corporation, and led the team that was responsible for the commercial discovery at the Caspiche Porphyry prospect in the Maricunga Gold Copper Belt of Chile. Ongoing drilling has resulted in an inferred estimate by Exeter of 12.65 million gold equivalent ounces.
Guardrails Effectively Protect Villagers from Wild Elephants' Attack in Southwest China
Guardrails have proved effective in protecting local residents from wild elephants' attacks in a village of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province.
Located in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, the village of Xiangyanqing was often intruded by wild Asian elephants that used to threaten the villagers' lives and property over the past few years.
When the elephants came into our village, they ate up all the banana leaves and sugarcane. If there is grain stored in your home, they would break into the door and eat the grain. They would also destroy the electric appliances at home, said villager Feng Guanglin.
The pilot guardrail program was introduced recently in the village for the first time in China to cope with the attacks from the wild elephants.
In order to ensure the safety of the residents, the local authority has also established a public liability insurance system, compensating for the loss caused by wild animals.
Moreover, elephant observers have been deployed in areas where the elephants usually appear. Their job is to send out warnings to villagers if emergency occurs.
The villagers noticed that in over a month, the wild elephants have come to the side of the guardrail for more than a dozen times. Because of the guardrail, the elephants couldn't enter the village. It shows that the guardrail is very effective, and we have found a good way to prevent people's lives and property from being damaged by wild elephants, said Guo Xianming, director of the Asian elephants protection project in Xishuangbanna.
Now, the project is being further carried out in other villages in the prefecture.
The Asian elephant is under first-class state protection in China. There are currently around 300 Asian elephants in the country.
