Banqiao MRT Station to get out-of-station interchange when Yellow Line opens
The final tests are wrapping up at Taipei MRT’s Yellow Line, which could open as early as the end of this year. One of its stations, at Banqiao, will be the first on the MRT network to feature an out-of-station interchange. This will let transferring passengers exit the station without handing in their token. After exiting, they’ll have 20 minutes to complete their transfer by walking through a colorful wonderland of art installations. This is the Yellow Line’s Banqiao Station. Its interior is covered in geometric motifs in color and black-and-white. With this design by French artist Daniel Buren, passengers feel like they’ve stepped inside a jewelry box.Columns on the train platform and the piers holding up the track are painted in a rainbow gradient. A high-tech LED display on the ceiling changes color when a train arrives.Lee Cheng-anNew Taipei Rapid Transit Systems Dept.This artist is very special. In addition to the static color blocks, passengers can look up at this station and see LED lights in all these different colors. The color schemes change between day and night.But Banqiao Station won’t just be unique for its public art. It will also be the first to allow passengers to walk outside the MRT perimeter to transfer between lines.These special transfer gates allow passengers through with the tap of a token. Once past, they’ll have 20 minutes to complete the transfer and continue on their journey.Lee Cheng-anNew Taipei Rapid Transit Systems Dept.You don’t have to hand your token back when you walk through these gates. You can use it to continue on to your destination. But you have to remember to transfer within 20 minutes. So keep an eye on the time if you want to look at the TRA and high-speed rail trains or the beautiful surroundings while you are transferring.The Yellow Line is set to open to passengers very soon. All that’s left is a final inspection. The new line could be up and running as early as the end of this year.
