Bantaey Srei Butterfly Centre: FIRST LOOK!! (Laos & Cambodia Se1)
Please help! Youtube has NEVER ALLOWED ME to MONETIZE my content! Because of this, my channel is completely dependent on crowdfunding. I am an independent entomologist that mainly talks about moths but sometimes also shows other invertebrates and a bit of biology. Below are some links of my work, my social media and to some ways that viewers can support my mission to protect, document and create awareness for insects. Help me help insects! Some ways to support me are:
-
My Patreon:
- Patreon is a subscription based platform, that allows you to subscribe to me for rewards: such as exclusive videos, content, polls and behind the scenes information, in return for a monthly donation. How much it costs per month is entirely up to you, starting from atleast 1$ per month! I strongly recommend this platform for people that like rewards in return for their donation. My Patrons can ask me for eggs or cocoons, vote on what episodes I will make, receive exclusive videos, and more.
-
My Paypal: For a single PayPal donation, use the following link: paypal.me/BartCoppens - with this link, PayPal users can send me a single and one-time payment - for those that want to show support but do not want subscription based platforms.

Hey, did you enjoy my videos, and are you curious to see my other content? Luckily for you, Youtube is not the only thing I do online. Below, I’d like to present you some links to my content.
-
Instagram: I don’t use Instagram a lot, but it is a good way to spread my pictures and information online. Follow me for selfies and moth photos! I take Instagram with a grain of salt however. Link:
-
My website: Hey, did you know I have my own, personal website about breeding moths in captivity? That’s right. And it’s awesome! It has caresheets that show you how to breed some of the moth species I’ve shown on Youtube, information on how to get started, and more. Link:
-
Whatsapp community: My Youtube channel has its very own group chat! Please use it responsibly, I use my personal phone number here. Secondly, there are also quite some of my young fans in this chat. We welcome you here:
-
My email: bart.coppens@hotmail.com – this is my personal email, please do not abuse. Due to the high amount of messages, I may not always respond.

Thank you for watching, like and subscribe! Below I will list some more things, including alternative ways to support me and my channel.
-
Buy me a coffee! My Ko-Fi: Ko-fi.com/bartbutterflies – The platform Ko-Fi is more like an online tip jar, that allows viewers to donate a small amount for the price of one coffee(about 3.50$ per tip). It is small but thoughtful, and unlike Patreon, not subscription or commitment based.
-
My Bitcoin wallet address: 31nNVQFakCKa9QThYgfccMumCB2kKemeuJ and my Ethereum wallet address: 0x6938B84F35980964FCFDA80bd4Da58e683181241 – Also a user of cryptocurrencies? Why not, it’s a growing trend – for those that prefer to use more modern methods.
-
My Redbubble: Redbubble is in fact not a donation platform. This websites sells post cards, t-shirts, posters and more – with pictures of my moths on them! When you order one, I get a small commission on the product. Ever wanted a wallet, phone case or mug with your favorite moth or caterpillar? Now you can.
-
My Subscribestar: Subscribestar is exactly like Patreon. So why use it instead of Patreon? Because Patreon has censored people for their political opinions in the past, and a small amount of people boycott the platform for that now – here is the alternative for those people:
-
My GofundMe projects: is a website that allows users to crowdfund huge and expensive projects. This is probably something that will only work out later, once I have way more subscribers than I do now, since they are big and expensive projects. But I’m a dreamer.
-
Hire me: only for the Netherlands or Belgium -: I am a Youtuber, moth breeder and artist that also makes money by using my moths and butterflies in creative ways. Want a photoshoot with butterflies? Or a wedding? Or maybe you want something educational: a public reading at your local school or university? Lectures about biology or evolution? Via this link you can hire me and some of my services. Mijn artiestenwebsite waar men lezingen, fotoshoots en meer kan kopen. Link:
Thank you for helping my mission.

Cambodian farmers making money with butterflies
Cambodia's Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre near Siem Reap is home to the largest butterfly centre in Southeast Asia.
As well as showcasing the country's abundance of butterfly species, the centre also trains poor local farmers to make extra money by raising butterflies.
Lepidopterists - butterfly and moth specialists - will find no shortage of inspiration here at the Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre, 25 kilometres from Siem Reap in northern Cambodia.
It was set up in 2009 by two British butterfly enthusiasts, Ben Hayes and Mike Baltzer who had previously set up the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre in Tanzania, East Africa.
There are over thirty species of butterflies at Banteay Srey, everything from Blue Glassy Tigers to Lime Butterflies and Tailed Jays.
Many stand out not just for their colouration or size but are fascinating in terms of their life cycles or because they eat only one particular plant.
Butterflies' lives are almost tragically short, with most species only surviving 15 to 40 days.
Lux Phem is the manager of the centre.
In Cambodia we have many species of butterflies, he says.
Different sizes - or the colours are quite different, some have very beautiful colours others are quite plain. Many butterfly species have developed amazing camouflage to protect themselves from predators.
The centre trains poor farmers living around Siem Reap in butterfly-raising techniques which guarantees a steady supply of butterflies while at the same time providing poor farmers with extra income.
Farmers like Savay Khoun can earn from $30 to $200 per month raising butterflies from eggs, and she says butterflies are a blessing:
I've been raising butterflies for four years already, she says.
Before my family had a lot of money problems but things are a lot better now since I've been working with butterflies. They're really quite easy to take care of, I just spend about two or three hours with them every morning which leaves me time to do something else.
Savay feeds the caterpillars leaves twice a day and raises them to the pupa stage, which she then sells to the Banteay Srey centre who hatch them.
The centre itself is in the process of getting an export license to sell pupa to international customers such as zoos.
Visitors to the centre here can see the various stages of the butterfly's fascinating lifecycle.
Caterpillars are fussy creatures that will only eat the leaves of specific plants.
Given a choice between the wrong leaf and starvation a caterpillar will always take the latter.
Eventually the caterpillars form into a chrysalis which is soft one day and hard the next.
Once hardened it can be handled and even shipped in the post.
Tour guide Moeun Boeun says you can tell some important facts about the creatures by looking at their cocoons:
If the cocoon have the shiny colour, attractive colour, it's so that they are poisonous, yeah, he says.
And this one in the cocoon, they are beautiful but when they come out it's not a beautiful butterfly, it becomes ugly.
After two or more weeks the butterflies emerge from their cocoons and fly off to live their lives inside the garden.
Unfortunately for the beautiful butterflies, they're not the only residents in the garden.
And these frogs aren't the friendliest of neighbours.
The Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre is open daily from 9am to 5pm and entrance costs $4.
