Bantry Historical & Archaeological Society held a very pleasant event in Bantry Library during Heritage Week 2019. Event was launched by Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan. This was the historical society’s first attempt at recording the creativity and culture of the valleys of Bantry. The following seven short videos give a glimpse of that rich and varied culture of these rural valleys of Bantry in West Cork.

Bantry House, West Cork
Since the1700's Bantry House was central to the historical and social landscape of #Bantry town and the surrounding hinterland that included Whiddy Island and Beara Peninsula.
The video attached shows the front of the great house where it overlooks Bantry Bay and nearby #WhiddyIsland
A snapshot of the History of Bantry House:
1690 Captain Richard White and family live on Whiddy Island
1701 Richard White (later Counsellor White) is born on Whiddy Island
1765 Richard White (Councillor White) purchases Bantry House (then called Blackrock House).
1767 Birth of Richard White (First Earl of Bantry).
1796 Attempted invasion of Ireland by the French, led by Wolfe Tone. (The White Family raised a militia to repel the pending invasion, which never happened due to weather and poor decisions on behalf of the French fleet commanders).
1797 Richard White created Baron Bantry.
1800 Birth of Richard White (Second Earl of Bantry).
1801 The title of Baron Bantry is advanced to Viscount Berehaven.
1801 Birth of William White (Third Earl of Bantry).
1816 Richard White elevated to the peerage (1st Earl of Bantry).
1820 to 1840 Richard White, Viscount Berehaven travels extensively and creates his collection.
1840 to 1860 The Famine. Major works on the demesne in progress.
1854 Birth of William White (Fourth Earl of Bantry)
1876 Birth of Edward Leigh White
1905 Birth of Clodagh Leigh White
1922 Irish Civil War. Bantry House used as a hospital for 5 years.
1933 Birth of Egerton Shelswell-White
1939 to 1945 Second World War. During the war years, the house and stables were occupied by the Second Cyclist Squadron of the Irish Army.

The Martello Tower in Sandymount
The Martello Tower at Sandymount was built in 1804. There were 28 towers built in Dublin, 16 on the southside and 12 on the northside, for example in Sutton, Howth and on Dalkey Island and Killiney Hill.

Tea With Carol Drinkwater and The Literary Women of Bantry at Bantry House
On the Seventh day of the 2010 Festival , noted Actress Carol Drinkwater ( All Things Good and Small) gave a talk at a Tea held in her honor at Bantry House' one of the great houses of Ireland.
When I worked on the images I was stunned by how wonderful this collection of Irish women, who shared a love of Literature, looked. Image after image showed thoughtful intelligence, character and above all, strength. Ms Drinkwater displayed a range of emotion normally found only on the the great Stages of the world. As I see the images of these wonderful women, I am convinced that I found true beauty in its essence in the afternoon light of Bantry House.

A&Z #619 - Atlas vs The Wild Atlantic Burger Challenge at The Clubhouse in Bantry, Ireland (Day #17/ Challenge #18). Hey everybody!! It's still day #17 of our 18-Country 2018 Summer Tour and for this food challenge I'm back at The Clubhouse down in Bantry, Ireland located off Bantry Bay in southwestern Ireland. I'll be taking on their 6lb Wild Atlantic Burger Challenge which consists of a giant 3lb 7-patty burger topped with cheese and healthy vegetables, served with three 1lb side items!! Thanks to The Clubhouse staff for their wonderful hospitality, and thanks to everyone who came that night to watch and meet us!! We appreciate our friends in Bantry (Country Cork) and all around the Republic of Ireland!!
