Firefighters Parade @ Kadena AB Okinawa Oct 15, 1988
Kadena Air Base's annual fireman's parade.
My li'l girl, Brittney, accompanied me. Enjoy - Dozo!
More memories in my Legacy Series is here:
Kadena Hospital Caves
This was taken 23 Apr 2011 on our 3rd investigation at the Kadena Hospital Caves located on the Banyan Tree Golf Course. Rumor has told us that during WWII there were 17 Japanese Nurses that were ordered to Commit Suicide in this cave with hand grenades because it would be better than to see what the Americans would do to them when the stormed the beaches and found them.
08 After the parade, walk over to Gate 2 Street - 3/18/17

After the parade I wandered around between Chuo Park Avenue (the old BC Street) and Gate 2 street, ending up at Koza Music Town
Concerns grow for the base from which the ill-fated EP-3E spy plane took off

6. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Vox pop
As the tension in the region grows, the bases here (Okinawa) will be more strongly forced and the closing of the bases will be more and more difficult.

STORYLINE:
There are fears in Japan that the tense stand-off between China and the U-S over the intercepted U-S spy plane could draw in the island of Okinawa, from where the plane took off.
The island off Japan's southern coast is strategically important for the U-S, which has nearly 30,000 troops based there and the base occupies a large proportion of the island.
China and North Korea are a quick flight to the west.
Russia's Pacific fleet is to the north and Taiwan is just over the southern horizon.
For decades Okinawa has been a prime location for spying.
When the famed but now retired SR-71 Blackbird spy planes were deployed at Kadena, tourists would perch on a hill outside the base fence to watch them take-off.
The capture of the U-S Navy EP-3E spy plane and its 24-member crew has driven home again the risks involved in keeping watch.
The $36 million EP-3E is the Navy's only land-based aircraft for intercepting radio and other signals, and it has been used heavily in supporting NATO forces in Bosnia.
The U-S military plane flew out of Kadena, said an editorial Tuesday in the Ryukyu Shimpo, a local newspaper. We should not let the latest accident develop into a new seed of dispute between the United States and China.
Kazuhisa Ogawa, a Japanese military analyst, said U-S intelligence activities off the Chinese coast have been increasing over the past two months, perhaps reflecting the desire of the new administration of President Bush to show its strength.
There is a high possibility that China, with its nuclear weapons, could be a threat, Ogawa said. If the relationship between the United States and China becomes tense, it is natural that Okinawa's importance will come under close scrutiny.
Though the plane took off from this U-S air base, the Air Force's largest in Asia, officials have generally refused to discuss the incident, referring queries back to headquarters in Hawaii or Washington.
They have stressed that the EP-3Es, like the one captured, are not based there, though the planes fly out of this and other U-S bases in Japan periodically.
It's more unusual than usual for us to have EP-3Es here, Navy spokeswoman Melody Scalfone said Wednesday.
Currently, RC-135 spy planes are a common sight on the Kadena base.
