FREE EBOOKLET Bao Sheng is a durian farm in Penang, Malaysia, dedicated to cultivation of durian - the king of fruits! It was established in 1959 and has a long history of providing the highest grade of durians to the public.
At the farm, you can choose between different quality levels when you sit down to your buffet. There are three levels, based on the age of the tree, which affects the quality of the taste.

I traveled to the Bao Sheng durian farm in Penang Malaysia. They grow over 15 varieties of organic durian. The season lasts from around mid may until the end of July. The web site is at : Come over and check it out!

At last I dedicate a video entirely to durian :)
We visited Bao Sheng Durian Farm located in Balik Pulau on Penang Island, Malaysia. We got there in the early morning on an empty stomach and signed up for the durian in black tasting. Here's everything that we ate:
1. Red prawn picked 8 hours prior (creamy, gooey, fresh, bright, wet)
2. Green skin 15 (creamy, thick, peanut butter-like)
3. Red prawn picked 1/2 hour prior from older tree than 1st one (creamier than the first if that's ever possible)
4. Jackie Chan's wife (creamy, thick, mild, peanut butter, cream cheese texture)
5. Red prawn just picked from an older tree (lots of black spots)
6. 2 more Red prawn, even fresher, all black spots everywhere
7. Two more durians vacuum sealed to go (that I ate for lunch the next day)
Needless to say we were quite durian'ed out after this!
Here are our pros and cons from our visit:
Pros:
-Very interesting to witness all the passionate durian aficionados stuffing their face in durian, buying bags and bags of durian to go
-Mr. Chang is very excited, interesting and patient at educating people about durian, how to recognize a fresh durian, tell a durian's age, in which order to sample them, how to whack them on the ground, etc.
-The durian was amazingly fresh and delicious and the whole experience revolves around what is fresh that day, and the amount of people flocking here to feast on durian really is a testimony to the quality of the fruits
-Beautiful setting on a cliff side in Penang with a view over the plantation and the straight if Melaka. Very jungle! ;)
-Unlimited amount of mangosteens, cempadak and rambutans throughout the day. We were also served a seemingly bottomless lunch of passion fruits, watermelon, dragon fruits, papayas and bananas mid-durian feast. SO MUCH FRUIT!
-Mr Chang is quite good a doing durian photography and will take your camera and do cool shots for you, playing with depth of field and different angles.
Cons:
-Real pain in the ass to get there and back from Teluk Bahang, the bus 501 goes every 3 hours which made it really difficult to pace the visit. In the end, we ran out of time (despite telling Mr. Chang that we had to take the 2:40 bus) and had to leave a half finished durian behind :(
-The only way to book right now is to call them, their email is full and bounces back and contacting them on Facebook has proven fruitless
-The pace of the day was strange. We were given a lot of attention in the beginning where we tried 3 durians back to back, then we had a short pleasant break before we tried 2 more durians, but then it got really busy and we were left wondering for two hours if that was it or if there was more coming. In the end, the last durians came to us just minutes before we had to leave despite us saying that we had to get going soon an we couldn't eat them all. It was confusing.
-The farm has several dogs that don't seem to be very well looked after. Most of them eat durians, so they all look healthy, but one of them doesn't and is clearly not fed any other food, it was just a skeleton. I was clearly upset, so they got some leftovers out for her which she voraciously ate on the spot. I asked Mr Chang when we departed if they could feed the dog some meat and he said he would do it tomorrow and then try to feed her durian again the next day. I understand that Malaysians are not so keen on dogs, but this was pure cruelty. Stay tuned for a follow up video on this though!
-The toilets are not very clean and there is no hand soap to be seen anywhere. Kinda strange for a place where everyone just eats with their hands...

100 durian lovers tasted the King of Fruits at Balik Pulau Lim Brothers Farm
Every year, between May and August, durian lovers flock to roadside durian stalls and the numerous farms all around Balik Pulau, Penang for a taste of the King of Fruits.
The durian is one fruit that draws visitors from near and far every year and it is no wonder as its creamy, sweet and rich flesh is unlike that of any other fruit.
Hundreds of makeshift durian stalls will pop up all over the island during this period to offer all types of durians from the popular Musang King to the common durian kampung.
It can be rather overwhelming as you are bound to find a durian stall, or even just a vendor on a motorbike offering durians from a basket, on every street corner and along busy main roads — especially Jalan Tun Sardon in Balik Pulau town.
Lim Brothers Farm offers a wide variety of hybrid durians such as Musang King, Or Chi (Black Stone), Hor Lor (Labu), Kun Poh, 101, D14, Capri and many more. They have more than 20 different types of durians from their durian orchards.The farm is open daily from 10am onward during late May until July.
The unsold durians don’t go to waste as the flesh is used to make the sticky sweet durian kuih, cooked over a simmering charcoal fire.

Durians From Another Throne In Balik Pulau

Manaweblife discovered a rarity in the world of durian trade in Bukit Penara in Balik Pulau, Penang. This is not a durian stall, but a house of durians! And most interesting of all is that the durian seller is an 87-year old durian master. In the video his wife can be seen right by his side. Mr Lim has over 200 durian trees but of different local species that are becoming scarce these days. Unlike the popular 'branded' species the local or wild durians are not often found in big quantities even though their tastes are different and some even better than the Musang King species, according to Mr Lim. Each tree sometimes bears only 2-3 fruits. Listen to the video and you will know that Mr Lim has deep knowledge about his durians and see how he amazingly can tell the difference between each fruit. Besides these local durians, Mr Lim now grows other fruits in his plantation in order to survive.
In this short interview , Manaweblife learned a lot about the other side of the durian trade and got to experience different durian tastes too. Manaweblife hope Mr Lim's knowledge, and as a guardian of durian in Balik Pulau, can be shared to all and remains an endearing heritage.
