The Dazu Rock Carvings Chongqing, China
The Dazu Rock Carvings (Chinese: 大足石刻; Pinyin: Dàzú Shíkè) are a series of Chinese religious sculptures and carvings, dating back as far as the 7th century A.D., depicting and influenced by Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs. Listed as a World Heritage Site, the Dazu Rock Carvings are made up of 75 protected sites containing some 50,000 statues, with over 100,000 Chinese characters forming inscriptions and epigraphs. The sites are located on the steep hillsides within Dazu County (near the city of Chongqing, China), with the high points being the carvings found on Mount Baoding and Mount Beishan.
The earliest carvings were begun in 650 A.D. during the early Tang Dynasty, but the main period of their creation began in the late 9th century, when Wei Junjing, Prefect of Changzhou, pioneered the carvings on Mount Beishan, and his example was followed after the collapse of the Tang Dynasty by local and gentry, monks and nuns, and ordinary people during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period (907-65). In the 12th century, during the Song Dynasty, a Buddhist monk named Zhao Zhifeng began work on the elaborate sculptures and carvings on Mount Baoding, dedicating 70 years of his life to the project.
The carvings were listed as a World Heritage Site in 1999, citing ...their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period. They provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

The Dazu Rock Carvings are about 1.5 hours drive north-west of Chongqing. At 75 different sites in the Chongqing Municipality, estimated 50,000 Chinese religious sculptures were carved in stone, with the oldest statues dating back to the early Tang Dynasty.
The most famous can be visited on the North Mountain (Bei Shan) and around Treasure Chest Mountain (Baoding Shan).
In the 9th century, a military outpost of the Shu Kingdom was located at the foot of the North Mountain. Many Buddhists sought refuge here during persecution. A general gave the orders to build the first sculptures.

Schatzkammerberg, Dazu, Chongqing - China Travel Channel
62 miles west of Chongqing you can visit the Dazu Rock Carvings ( 大 足 石刻 ). In the hillsides around the city of Dazu 50 000 statues were carved in the rocks. Most are located on the North Hill and the Treasure Chest Mountain - Baoding Shan. The Treasure Chest Mountain, 6.3 miles northeast of Dazu, is the second most important mountain for Buddhists in China. Baoding Shan with its 10,000 sculptures has become a bible written in stone for the Buddhists.
Most of these statues were made in the 11th and 12th Century. The statues show the Buddhist deities. They also show many examples of actions and their various punishments after death. Punishment can be avoided if you live a devout life and enter into Nirvana.
Next to the sleeping Buddha, with a length of 98 ft, is Guanyin (觀音 - 观音) the God of Mercy with 1000 hands and 1000 eyes. It is the best known statue and appeared earlier in the form of a man and later in the form of a woman, as seen here during the Song Dynasty.
Since 1999, the rock sculptures of Dazu are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

100 km westlich von Chongqing befindet sich die Felsskulpturen von Dazu - 大足石刻.
