Frederick W. Crook is the president of the China Group, a company that provides quality assessments of China’s rural economy. Crook and his wife Elizabeth have worked and served in both the private and public sectors with expertise in Asia. He served as president over the Taiwan Taipei Mission (1977–79). He received a BA magna cum laude in political science and Asian studies from Brigham Young University (1964) and a PhD (1970) from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. They are the parents of six children.
The posters range in size from 1.5 feet square behind glass display cases to 30 feet high and 40 feet in length. Some appear on walls in public places and in residential neighborhoods. The Frederick W. Crook Collection on Rural China contains 40,000+ photos and 45,000 reports spanning sixty years of recent Chinese history (1955–2015). Crook's collection will soon be housed in L. Tom Perry Special Collections in the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU.

Multifunctional Soft Robots
Researchers at Caltech and at Harvard have developed soft robotic systems, inspired by origami, that can move and change shape in response to external stimuli, paving the way for fully untethered soft robots.
Through sequential folds, origami can encode multiple shapes and functionalities in a single structure. Using materials known as liquid crystal elastomers that change shape when exposed to heat, the research team 3D-printed two types of soft hinges that fold at different temperatures and thus can be programmed to fold in a specific order.
While this research only focused on temperature responses, liquid crystal elastomers can also be programmed to respond to light, pH, humidity, and other external stimuli.
In the future, such materials can be programmed to perform ever more complex tasks, blurring the boundaries between materials and robots, said Caltech’s Chiara Daraio, professor of mechanical engineering and applied physics and co-lead author of the study.
This research was supported by the Army Research Office, the Harvard Materials Research Science and Engineering Center through the National Science Foundation, and the NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship.

Cinnabar Cinnabar or Vermillion is the naturally occurring mineral mercury sulphide (HgS). Inorganic mercury such as the mercury found in cinnabar is the least toxic form of mercury and has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, ancient Roman makeup, Hindu Bindi forehead marking and Sindoor hair marking but should still be considered toxic and handled with care, especially in powder form. The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention states:
Inorganic Mercury: When eaten in large amounts, some inorganic mercury compounds can be very irritating and corrosive to the digestive system. If repeatedly eaten or applied to the skin over long period of time, some inorganic mercury compounds can cause effects similar to what is seen with long term mercury vapor exposure, including neurological disturbances, memory problems, skin rash, and kidney abnormalities.

There is uncertainty about how poisonous cinnabar is and about the amount required to produce dangerous effects. Scientists generally recommend that we limit our exposure to all mercury compounds, however, including inorganic mercury.
People using cinnabar are warned not to inhale cinnabar dust and to be very careful when breaking the mineral in case dust is created. The mineral mustn’t be ingested or licked. In addition, it mustn’t be heated, which might trigger mercury vapor release. Opinions are divided about whether cinnabar is safe to touch. Mercury (ll) sulfide can be absorbed through the skin, but how much is actually absorbed from a lump of cinnabar mineral is unknown. Since there are unanswered questions about the mineral’s safety, it’s best to wear gloves when handling it.
