Construction on four large tourism development projects was suspended as Beijing restricted overseas remittance and mandated foreign companies to undergo a reapproval process. As a result, local construction companies are suffering extensive losses from cancelled contracts.
[Soundbite] Lee Eun-haeng (Construction Firm): About 1,000 workers have become jobless. Restaurants, equipment providers, and hardware stores nearby are all having difficulties. Numerous stores are closing down in the commercial areas that used to cater to Chinese visitors.
[Soundbite] (Merchant on Baojian Street (Voice modified)): The store across from mine is changing ownership and nearby stores sell different things or have new owners. Retail sales in Jeju have fallen in the second quarter of this year for the first time since Statistics Korea started keeping records.
