These videos follow my journey of being an Au Pair in Hangzhou, China, which i will be for the following 6 months. throughout these videos i hope to document my experience as an Au Pair and what i learn from living in a different country/culture for 6 months.

Hiking Precious Stone Hill or Baoshi Mountain (Hangzhou's West Lake - Day 2)
Precious Stone Hill / 宝石山 is over 200 meters (656 feet) high. Its scenic feature are the many red rocks spreading all over the slopes of the hill, which sparkle like diamonds inlaid in the rosy morning or evening sunlight (Ten Scenes of The West Lake - Precious Stone Hill Floating in Rosy Clouds).
The Baochu Pagoda / 保俶塔 is a pagoda located just north of the lake on top of Precious Stone Hill. Its small base supports seven stories (45 meters) and gives it a distinctively slender and elegant appearance.
The name Baochu, translated directly, means protect Chu, who, legend has it, refers to Qian Chu, the last king of Wuyue. As the story goes, one of King Chu's ministers had the temple constructed for prayers to be said for his safe return from a trip he had taken to Kaifeng, in central China. He had been summoned there by the Emperor and had been gone many days with no news of his return.
It was originally constructed in 963 and stood nine storeys tall. Its most recent reconstruction, in 1933, left it slightly shorter, seven storeys, and it has most recently had its lantern replaced on its top, though its previous one is on display near the pagoda. It is constructed of brick and stone and contains no internal staircase. The tower lies next to a path that runs the length of West Lake's northern mountain range and is accessible by both dirt paths and cement stairs from nearly every side of the mountain.

Running in the Hangzhou Mountains, China
A trail run in China usually looks a lot different to the US. Concrete steps. Lots and lots (and lots) of concrete steps. Here is the mountain section of a long run with friends in China.
West Lake, Hangzhou Zhejiang (China)

Walking Hangzhou's West Lake (Day 2)
Walking Hangzhou's West Lake / 西湖 on day 2 included:
- Hiking Precious Stone Hill or Baoshi Mountain /
- Lianheng Memorial Hall /
- Yue Fei Temple /
The West Lake is a freshwater lake in Hangzhou, China. It is divided into five sections by three causeways. There are numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, and artificial islands within the lake.
West Lake has influenced poets and painters throughout Chinese history for its natural beauty and historic relics, and it has also been among the most important sources of inspiration for Chinese garden designers. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, described as having influenced garden design in the rest of China as well as Japan and Korea over the centuries and reflecting an idealized fusion between humans and nature.
Traditionally, there are ten best-known scenic spots on the West Lake, each remembered by a four-character epithet. Collectively, they are known as the Ten Scenes of West Lake (10 Scenic Spots in West Lake 西湖十景). Each is marked by a stele with an epithet written in the calligraphy of the Qianlong Emperor. They are:
1) Dawn on the Su Causeway in Spring
2) Curved Yard and Lotus Pool in Summer
3) Moon over the Peaceful Lake in Autumn
4) Remnant Snow on the Bridge in Winter
5) Leifeng Pagoda in the Sunset
6) Two Peaks Piercing the Clouds
7) Orioles Singing in the Willows
8) Fish Viewing at the Flower Pond
9) Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon
10) Evening Bell Ringing at the Nanping Hill

Hangzhou West Lake's Yue Fei Temple (Hangzhou's West Lake - Day 2)
The Yue Fei Temple / 岳王庙 or commonly known in Chinese as Yuewang Temple / 岳王廟 is a temple built in honour of Yue Fei, a general of the Southern Song dynasty who fought against the Jurchen Jin Dynasty during the Jin–Song wars, after the capital of China moved south to Hangzhou. The temple ground is located near the West Lake, in central Hangzhou.
Map of the West Lake with the location of Yue Fei Temple
The temple was first constructed during the Song Dynasty in 1221 to commemorate Yue Fei. The site includes Yue Fei's Temple, Loyalty Temple and Yue Fei’s Mausoleum inside. The temple was reconstructed several times in later date. The tombs and the tomb sculptures in the temple all date from the 12th century, and have been meticulously restored.
