Baotou, Inner Mongolia is China's largest
rare earth mineral production base.
Although it is a precious mineral resource,
rare earth imposes great dangers of pollution.
Recently, French media reported from Baotou.
Entitled In China, rare earths are killing villages,
the report highlighted massive environmental pollution.
It revealed the impact of the production of rare earth
minerals on local residents, animals and land.
The following is our report.
French media 'Le Monde' reported from Baotou, stating
that by aerial viewpoint, it looks like a large lake,
fed by numerous tributaries. On site, it is actually
an opaque discharge covering an area of 10 km2.
Surrounding the industrial plants producing 17 minerals
are reject waste waters loaded with chemicals.
There are no fish or algae
The Le Monde article introduced that rock from Bayan obo
rare earth ore mine, located 120 kilometers away, are sent here for treatment.
The concentration of rare earth in the rocks is very low and
must be separated and purified by hydrometallurgical processes and acid baths.
In the effluent basin are exist all sorts of toxic chemicals
and radioactive elements such as thorium.
Ingestion of these toxins causes cancer
of the pancreas, lung and blood.
A pungent odor exudes within radius of 10 miles.
Local villagers have been suffering from cancer.
Rows of brown houses in the village
have been reduced to rubble.
Sichuan environmentalist Chen Yunfei indicates
that rare earth refining process causes great environmental pollution and destruction.
People are unaware of the specific dangers of this project,
and the specialists involved in the decision-making.
Chen Yunfei: Some officials only work on the image projects
for profit. They relocate once the money has been made.
Some officials collude with the business, caring about
nothing but profit, leaving the mess for the public.
According to local residents, Baotou
used to be a vast grassland.
In 1958 the state enterprise Baotou Iron and Steel
Company began producing rare earth production.
By the end of 1980, locals found that the plant was in trouble.
Last year, China Environment News reported that
Baotou Iron and Steel Group's tailing dam leakage has caused damage to five surrounding villages.
It has affected more than 3000 farmers,
and ruined more than 3,295 Acres of farmland.
Ma Peng, former Director of the Baotou Rare Earth
Research Institute, indicated that
due to the lack of a barrier below the tailing dam, the mining
waste is directly discharging into the Yellow River.
The discharge is at a rate of 300m per year.
The residents also said that further pollution has been
caused by other industries and thermal power plants.
These industries followed rare earth production
by the Baotou Iron and Steel Company.
Local residents have to breathe air saturated with sulfuric
acid and coal dust. Coal dust is airbourne around the houses.
Cows, horses, chickens and goats
are being killed by these poisons.
The locals have fled, and Xinguang Sancun village has now
decreased from 2000 villagers to 300. Every family is hit with illness.
After 20 years of complaints to the local government, the
villagers have finally won promises of financial compensation.
These have only been partially fulfilled.
Miss Hao, a resident of Baotou: We all know.
The government is too dark.
No one cares about the people, whether
they live or die, not to mention the pollution.
For many years, there have been calls for attention
for the issue of Baotou tailing dam discharging thorium radiation to Baotou and into the Yellow River.
The hazards and pollution caused by the Baotou
tailing dam have never been effectively alleviated.
Environmentalist Chen Yunfei: This is an investment
that has hurt several generations.
It has polluted the whole environment.
This high cost investment ought to be condemned.
Our future generations are going to suffer for it.
China Environment News indicated that Baotou
is located in the stratum fracture zone.
In the event of a major earthquake or large-scale rainfall,
the rupture of the tailing dam will threaten the surrounding
five villages, as well as tens of thousands of lives
of the Baotou Iron and Steel workers.
If the tailings flow into the Yellow River,
it will cause serious pollution to the river.

Blast Site at Residential Community in North China Remains in Complete Shambles
The blast site at a residential community in north China remains in a complete shambles.
A building in Xiangyang Community in Tumd Right Banner in Baotou city, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, was ripped through by a powerful explosion Saturday afternoon. One of the three connecting blocks of the building entirely collapsed.
But this building was not the only apartment that was hit. The blast was so powerful that it has also rattled nearby buildings within the community, leaving numerous fractured steel bars, many window panes shattered, and broken glass scattered everywhere. A dozen cars were severely damaged.
Even in a relatively farther apartment, its window and door edges were deformed, floor cracked and parts of ceiling fell down because of the tremendous shock.
As of now, five people were confirmed dead in the explosion and 25 were injured, including four in critical condition.
Comprehensive investigation into the cause of the blast is still underway. It was reported earlier that it might have been triggered by a natural gas explosion in a residential house.

The Shanghai South station has a pretty good style compared to the typical Chinese station with its overall roof. These shots were obtained after getting off an express from Ningbo. I was expecting to be thrown off by the usual Railway Police but the station was quite relaxed by Chinese standards with no hassle from anyone.

5 Killed, Over 20 Injured in North China Apartment Blast
A total of 83 homes were damaged in a powerful explosion that ripped through an apartment building in north China, killing at least five and injuring another 20 and more, local government said.
In a late night update, the government of Tumd Right Banner, Baotou City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region said it has resettled 259 people after the blast.
Teams of power, water, fire control, work safety, environment are working to ensure the explosion does not lead to secondary disasters, officials said.
The rescuers are also searching the buildings in case some residents have been trapped.
We are making full efforts to search the injured in case they might have been trapped when the accident occurred, said Zhao Hui, mayor of Tumd Right Banner.
The injured are in stable condition, and some affected residents described the blast scenario.
As our house's living room is just facing the garage, all the living rooms on this row have gone, said Liu Xiao'e, a local resident.
A working group has been formed to handle the aftermath of the accident, and its members are trying to help those who have been affected.
We are here to soothe the residents mentally. We will try our best to help them if they have any problems, said a group member working at hospital.
The blast occurred at early Saturday afternoon. It was so powerful that one of the three connecting blocks of the apartment was almost leveled to the ground. Window panes of many nearby buildings were also shattered.
The government said the cause is still being investigated. Earlier reports indicated that it might have been caused by a natural gas leak.

A QJ works a freight train in the rain. We set up under a highway bridge in the muddy river bed for protection from the rain for this moody shot. Fortunately no noisy vehicles passed overhead to ruin the video.
Smoke hangs low over the train as it approaches the viaduct on this cold dismal day. The locomotive drivers slip slightly on the wet rail as the locomotive traverses the bridge. The engineman responds immediately by easing back on the throttle and the engine regains her footing. As the train continues into the distance, a new diesel locomotive is revealed after the 10th car in the train, signaling the end of an era. The line was fully diesel powered in 2005.

This Lake Shouldn’t Be Blue (Excerpt from ‘Toxic Waste in the US: Coal Ash’)
Coal ash, which contains many of the world's worst carcinogens, is what's left over when coal is burnt for electricity. An estimated 113 million tons of coal ash are produced annually in the US, and stored in almost every state — some of it literally in people's backyards. With very little government oversight and few safeguards in place, toxic chemicals have been known to leak from these storage sites and into nearby communities, contaminating drinking water and making residents sick.
VICE News travels across the US to meet the people and visit the areas most affected by this toxic waste stream. Since coal production is predicted to remain steady for the next few decades, coal ash will be a problem that will affect the US for years to come.
In this excerpt, VICE News correspondent Neha Shastry visits Little Blue Run, the largest coal ash impoundment in the US, and speaks to a resident about the environmental effects of this big blue toxic lake.

北彊#1國賓吉普跨越天山往賽里木湖遇上遊牧遷徙實錄-粵語解述1998 North Silkroad tour start
Saucer Shaped Object Captured Hovering Above The Clouds During Flight From Amsterdam to China
Witness Statement As Follows: Ming Yang claims
I have lived and worked in Argentina for 6 years. On September 12, 2018, my wife and I finally got on the flight from Argentina to Amsterdam. Our terminal is Fujian Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport.
After a short stay at the Amsterdam International Airport, transfer to Dutch Airlines, flight number KL883, model: Boeing 787-9.
I don’t know how many hours of flight, after a few sleeps and wake up, I watched the mobile phone at 09:31. I should fly to China. The mobile phone is in flight mode, I can’t access the Internet, I don’t have WIFI, I’m bored. Looking out the window, I suddenly saw a strange black cloud, yes, it was a black cloud, not a black cloud. I quickly took out my mobile phone and immediately took it. The clouds in the impression are all white, how are there black? It is not surprising that everyone looks at this piece of cloud. The heart wants to be able to see the UFO, because it has a lot of curiosity and awe.
I foresee that this trip is not normal. I asked my wife next to me to look outside. She said coldly that it was normal. Clouds are like this. I can only say that women are women. So I held the mentality of trying it out and continued to look out the window to see if I could find something. I watched it for ten minutes and found nothing, so I went to Xiaomi again.
After almost an hour, I suddenly felt something strange, and looked out of the window. There was a disc-like UFO in the distance. At first glance, it looked like a cigar, and immediately pulled out the phone and was nervous. Excited, I was afraid to miss the first intimate contact between me and UFO. Too excited, the first focus lens was not photographed. I immediately pulled the phone and pulled it into the lens again. I finally photographed it.
Silver-gray discs, there seem to be two layers above and below, in a static state, I don’t know what they are doing, I don’t know if anyone is seeing it, I don’t know if the captains have seen it, I’m excited to call my wife. Looking at this UFO, she still gave me a sentence, isn't it a cloud, as excited as it is, it is your hallucination.
I am speechless, come, upload a video to everyone to see what it is, iphone 7 plus was shot on September 14th, 2018 AM 10:30.
