Steam in China 1997 Part 1
Some of the scenes on Steam in China 1997 parts 1 & 2 were uploaded to YouTube in 2009, size restrictions at that time meant they were only a minute or two long. I have now re-uploaded those scenes together with extra material.
Part 1
Tangshan colliery.
Anshan steelworks. This massive and heavily polluted steelworks had a rare class PL2 class 2-6-2 and a fleet of SY class 2-8-2s. There was also a selection of steeple cab electric locos.
Yebaishou: Many QJ class 2-10-2 locos were still in action in the Yebaishou area on passenger and freight trains on the CNR main line in 1997. Spirited running by the QJs was often seen. But diesel traction had started to appear.
Pingzhuang mine, a rare KD6 class loco is briefly seen in action.

China - First Western Visitor to Yongcheng, 2004
The coal railway system around the city of Yongcheng was operated using mainly QJ class 2-10-2s with shunting support from JS8363. I was the first western visitor to the system in June 2004, following a report by a Japanese enthusiast.
The line operated a fleet of beautifully kept QJs including the possibly renumbered QJ3000 in supershine condition.
On our visit we were lucky to witness QJ3550 specially decorated and heading a train of brand new hopper wagons which made up the first coal load to a newly built power station. The train was to take part in an opening ceremony with local dignitaries. The headboard reads - He Yu East Power Station - Coal Mining Transport and Delivery .
During our two day visit, we were challenged by police but they had no instructions about foreigners filming trains so they let us carry on after a few phone calls!
Filmed in June 2004.

On a little adventure, I took my Kawasaki ZRX 1200r out for a spin, only to find an entire town dedicated to different religions. I was surrounded by mosques, temples, churches. You name it, it was there. Also, there were mud huts, but across the street was a very wealthy replica village of the Qing dynasty. weird...

What's behind China's railway speed?
From the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway – the first train link through the desert – to the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest and longest plateau rail line, China has overcome a slew of challenges, while also progressing steadily toward building a network of eight east-west and eight north-south high-speed rail lines.

China - JiTong, My Last Visit, February 2006
This is a last look at the glory days of QJ steam over the JingPeng Pass on the JiTong Railway in Inner Mongolia, China. It features my last few shots of the line recorded on Mini-DV tape in February 2006, just before the line was dieselised. In fact, one brief shot shows one of the newly acquired diesels on a freight working at LinDong.
An important piece of railway history featured here is a final look at the daily passenger express between Jining and Tongliao. This was the last timetabled mainline passenger steam working in the world and, as my very last view of it, represents a huge piece of nostalgia for me personally.
I must apologise for the soundtrack in the final few sequences. They were recorded in exceptionally windy conditions. I had previously rejected the shots for this reason but, as the years pass by, the value of these few sequences has grown!
Pyotr Kozlov. Secrets of the Lost City
Pyotr Kozlov. Secrets of the Lost City
Pyotr Kozlov is an outstanding traveler and geographer. His life is like an adventure novel compared with which all fictional stories of movie heroes look rather dull. He spent 17 years in expeditions across Central Asia and charted hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of unknown land. He discovered the dead city Hara-Hoto in the Gobi sands, and it became one of the main archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. It was a world-wide scientific sensation. He discovered a disappeared empire that existed on the border of Tibet, China and Mongolia, an unknown language as well as an unknown system of writing. Among the findings there were the dictionaries that helped to decipher a dead language. The findings of Pyotr K. Kozlov occupy now three halls of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and constitute the world's largest collection of medieval manuscripts. This person became the first European in history who was invited by the Dalai Lama to visit Lhasa.
