Alpinism in Chamonix - Pointe Isabella 3.671m
During the summer of 2017, my Dad asked me to go mountain climbing with him to legendary Chamonix, the climbing mecca at the foothills of highest mountain of the Alps, Mont Blanc. It was going to be my first time alpine climbing, an adventurous sport that my father has been practising for over 40 years and wanted to share with me. I immediately accepted, having only seen the captivating mountains around Chamonix in pictures.
Our goal was to summit Pointe Isabella(3.671 m), named after Isabella Straton, who took part in its first ascent in 1875.
My adventure would start in Madrid, where I was living at the time. After failing to catch the first flight (not my fault), I had to rebook. In the end, it took me 12 hours to get to Düsseldorf, where my father lives. From there, we packed and set off in the middle of the night, driving through the darkness. After 12 hours, we arrived in Chamonix.
Once everything was ready, we headed towards the Montenvers train Station, which took us up to the stunning glacier of Mer de Glace. Heading straight through this literal sea of ice was an amazing thing to see. From there, we climbed up to the Couvercle Hut, which we reached just before sunset.
After a (very) short night, at 3 am we were heading out towards the summit. During the long and steady hike through rock and ice, I was constantly amazed by the beauty of the landscape and, at the same time, how scary everything looked.
Unfortunately, we reached an icewall that, while passable, was far too technical for the equipment we had brought and my skill level. We could have surpassed it, but the chances of belaying were slim and we had no good way of getting down afterwards. Glaciers are constantly moving and sometimes they form into difficult crevasses and seracs, like this time.
It was a little hard to turn back 300 metres below summit, but this is how it works in the mountains they show you how small you are. There, as in life, sometimes you get lucky and others you learn.
Even if we didn't reach the summit, we were super happy to have had such a cool adventure together. After all, it's all about having fun but also coming home safely. And, since we didn't summit, we have an excuse to come back. :)

The world famous French resort of Val d'Isere.
Lying in the heart of the Vanoise national park, Val d'Isere is undoubtedly one of the most highly regarded ski resorts in France. Once an 11th century farming village, it first opened its doors to skiers in 1932 and has been steadily expanding ever since. The village has not lost any of the unique character and charm of its past; its narrow pedestrianised streets lined with archways, traditional stone architecture and enchanting 16th century church making it one of the prettiest large alpine resorts. The town lies along the banks of the river Isere and is made up of three connected villages: the bustling town centre of Val Village, the futuristic La Daille, and the sleepy hamlet of Le Fornet.
One of the world's best resorts for expert skiers and confident intermediates, Val D'Isere also has good facilities for beginners, with a wide choice of ski schools and a range of progressive green and blue runs. Val d'Isere and Tignes together make up the huge Espace Killy, with 300km of pistes as well as a vast selection of accessible off-piste runs. The high altitude of most slopes means that snow is virtually guaranteed all season long, and the efficiency of the lift system means that one can ski from one side of the piste map to the other without ever having to get on a bus.
For a high altitude resort, Val d'Isere is extremely lively. It boasts a fantastic apres ski scene and varied nightlife, with countless bars and restaurants. High end shops abound, and events such as torchlit descents, horseback polo, downhill racing and big air competitions are regular occurences throughout the season.

Barre des Ecrins - French Alps
A short HD video on the magnificent Barre des Ecrins 4102m in the French Alps featuring butterflies, marmots, overhanging seracs plus a rarely seen brocken spectre and a classic mountaineering dilemma on whether to carry on in poor conditions and deteriorating weather after being sick? Or to stop because it is probably the sensible thing to do and the mountain will always be there?
What would you have done? :-)
