Forest fire burns in western Newfoundland
The fire began Friday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of the Trans-Canada and the Burgeo highways at Barachois Brook.
STEPHENVILLE CROSSING, N.L. -- A forest fire has forced the evacuation of some cabins and campers in an area near Stephenville Crossing, N.L.
The RCMP says it's adjacent to Route 480, the Burgeo Highway.
Barachois Search and Rescue are at the scene helping with traffic control and water patrols, and the public is being asked to stay out of the area.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro spokeswoman Merissa Wiseman says the fire began underneath a hydro transmission line that runs from Bottom Brook into Stephenville.
Power went out for about 10,000 customers, but has since been restored.
Provincial forest fire duty officer Steve Balsom says two waterbombers and a helicopter have been sent to the site.
As of 10 a.m. next morning the fire is contained and there's no visible flames.
The fire burned about 350 hectares of bog, forest and scrub.

Newfoundland (, locally ; French: Terre-Neuve) is a large Canadian island off the east coast of the North American mainland, and the most populous part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has 29 percent of the province's land area. The island is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait. It blocks the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, creating the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the world's largest estuary. Newfoundland's nearest neighbour is the French overseas community of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

By that classification, Newfoundland and its associated small islands have a total area of 111,390 square kilometres (43,008 sq mi).According to 2006 official Census Canada statistics, 57% of responding Newfoundland and Labradorians claim British or Irish ancestry, with 43.2% claiming at least one English parent, 21.5% at least one Irish parent, and 7% at least one parent of Scottish origin. Additionally 6.1% claimed at least one parent of French ancestry. The island's total population as of the 2006 census was 479,105.

I took a trip to the Serpentine River this summer with friends Ray and Cyndie Humber who are also owners of NewFoundoutfitting. I have always looked at maps of Newfoundland and Labrador and dreamed of visiting this part of the province. The Serpentine is located between Blow-Me-Down Mountain and the Louis Hills. Louis Hill is the highest point on the island portion of the Province at 815m. Ray and I had a fantastic day salmon fishing. Early in the morning, a cow moose walked up to us, watched us fish for a while and then nonchalantly walking off into the alders. We also saw two great blue herons, an uncommon sight on the Island. Ray cooked up a delicious shore lunch, the memory of which will last a lifetime. I managed to hook (and lose) a salmon and a grilse. Before spitting out my dry fly, both fish gave me shots of adrenalin with their spectacular jumping abilities. I will have to go back again to see if I can actually land a Serpentine salmon.
