Haiti's Iconic Rum Maker Back in Production
One of Haiti's most well known exports and a symbol of national pride is back in business. Barbancourt's rum was first distilled in Port au Prince in the 1860's by Dupre Barbancourt, a French cognac maker. The company maintained production through Haiti's turmoil of the last century and a half, but January's earthquake was devastating. The factory sustained extensive damage. After several months of repairs, Haiti's prized rum is back in production. Jeff Swicord Reports.

Haiti Tourism History 1970s to 1980s
Haiti only had 2 successful tourism period in history so far (1949-1959 and 1971-1986). Another attempt to revive tourism was made in 2006 but the 2010 earthquake put the project to an halt. Yet again in 2014 there was another strong push. The 1949 World Expo held in Port-au-Prince created an opportunity for the Haitian Government, led by Dumarsais Estimé, to attract international attention to Haiti and to develop its tourism industry. Haiti tourism in the 1960's was up and down during the François Duvalier Papa Doc regime. In the the 1970's and early 1980's tourism in Haiti was booming under Jean-Claude Duvalier Baby Doc. Although Haiti was under a dictatorial regime, they at least understood the value of tourism. Haiti was known as the Paris and pearl of the Antilles. Haiti even received tourists from nearby islands who were impressed with its numerous unspoiled beaches, mountains, exceptional coffee, rum, creole food, art, religion, history and beautiful people. Commercial tourism started taken off with Club Med opening its doors in 1980. Hillary and Bill Clinton spent their honeymoon in Haiti. The Haitian Gourdes was stronger back then versus the American dollar. The country was also a draw for foreign business as it was one of the safest countries in the world for tourists. Spirits are high for Haiti's rum producers
The earthquake that ravaged much of Haiti in January stopped production of a prized product and the country's national drink: rum. Reserves ran low at home and abroad, and bottles were selling on the black market for double their normal price, according to producers. But Haitians can look forward to a plentiful flow of the brown gold once again. Barbancourt, the blenders that make the majority of the country's rum, are back up and running. Duration: 01:18
