Train Simulator 2015 - Gatwick Express Class 442 (Gatwick Airport - Brighton)
The Class 442 is FINALLY out for TS 2015! Having been released at the interesting and annoying time of 21:00 on Thursday 28/05/15. This train is a great addition to the London - Brighton route, as it was the only train needed to complete the set of trains that run from day to day on the London - Brighton main line, these are Class 319, 377 (Thameslink), 377 (Southern) and Class 442 (Gatwick Express - Southern Franchise). So now the inventor on the Steam Workshop (including us) can make truly realistic scenarios for the route.
The train includes cool features like:
- Working Fan (2 speeds)
- DRA
- 2 Brake Modes (Electro Pneumatic and Air)
- You can chose the Destination Board, which has destination such as:
Brighton, London Bridge, London Victoria, East Croydon, Sittingbourne, ect..
- Realistic Wipers
- Passenger View (however its wrong!)
- Day, Night, Marker Headlights
- Two Tone Horn (copied from Class 455/456)
- Full livery
The train overall is quite good, however again the sounds are copied from the Class 455 (minus compressor), however contains some very nice features such as the destination board choices and the realistic look of the wipers.
The Class 442, in real life, were built in 1988 for the newly electrified Southampton - Weymouth route, replacing Class 33/1 and Class 438 (4TC) push pull trains which ran from Weymouth to Southampton and the Class 438 (4TC) was the hauled by a EMU (Class 423 or 421) onto Waterloo.
In the 1990s they also worked down to Portsmouth. In 2004 they were displaced on the Portsmouth route by the new Class 450 and 444 Desiros. In 2007 they were replaced on the Weymouth route as well by more Class 444s. In 2008, they started work on Gatwick Express services replacing the Class 460, which were only 8 years old! The Class 460s are now being used to make the new 5 car Class 458/5 on South West Trains.
When they entered service they received a refurbishment and the Gatwick Express livery applied. The Class 442 are going to be replaced on the Gatwick Express route by new Class 387 electrostars, so 2016 could mark the end of the Class 442s.
The senario we play is called 'Seaside Flyer' were you are
'callenged' to beat the so called 104mph Third Rail Train speed record (it is actually 108mph - set by the Class 442!) and you have to beat it by accelerating to 108mph between Haywards Heath and Hassocks on the first Gatwick Express journey extended down to Brighton. The scenario is 30 minutes and ranked easy.
