The Reserve is a pioneer in ornithological research. Bird Life South Africa has declared it an important national birding site.

The Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is a huge 2000 ha body of water located between Delareyville and Sannieshof. Certain areas on the pan is designated for anglers to enjoy excellent fishing opportunities for Carp, Barbel Mudfish and Moggel.
SA Ramsar - Barberspan
Barberspan is the only Ramsar wetland in the North West Province of South Africa. It offers one of the best inland sites to watch waterbirds. With an infrastructure for bird ringing and more than 400 bird species recorded here, it attracts bird scientists from all over the world.
Fresh water fishing is very popular at Barberspan and attracts fishing competitions from all over South Africa.

All systems go for the 11th SAFTAs at Sun City
