Let's Jam! Fall Country Jamboree at the Barberville Pioneer Settlement
Abby and I spend some time at a true slice of Old Florida - the Fall Country Jamboree at the Barberville Pioneer Settlement. We listen to some beautiful folk and bluegrass music, drop in on some craft demonstrations and try to settle the question of the proper way to eat corn on the cob.

Convict Cage Wagon, Barberville Pioneer Settlement.
Convict Cage Wagon, Barberville Pioneer Settlement. This was a very exciting and unexpected find for us, easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Everyone knows of the chain gangs – men who were literally chained together while working outside the walls of the prison facility – but I had never given any thought to their mode of transportation to and from and this was it. This iron cage was placed on and affixed to a wagon pulled by animals through the scrub. During a time in our world when we believed in punishment for criminal acts and were not afraid to inflict it upon those deserving of it, men were chained together and forced to perform manual labor under the harshest conditions imaginable. In the present, men convicted of similar and more severe acts are left to languish in their cells and what we know today as “chain gangs” are pale shadows of their former selves with the participants being volunteers who are not chained and are serving lesser sentences and are actually paid for their labor.
Astor Bridge Tender’s House, Barberville Pioneer Settlement.
Astor Bridge Tender’s House, Barberville Pioneer Settlement. Built in 1926 SR 40 once crossed beneath the overhang and over the bridge across the St. John’s River at Astor. During this visit the docent relayed to me the story of his having met an elderly woman who visited the settlement and as a child called this house home, he also told me about a murder of one of the bridge tenders which took place right on the bridge, needless to say that was a fascinating conversation.

Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, Blountstown, Fla.
The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement is a lovely outdoor museum of life in rural Calhoun County, Florida, before WW2. It was a Saturday morning in mid-June, so not many other people were there. It is also in the Central Time Zone, so keep that in mind for the times when visiting, because previous attempts to visit here were when it was closed. It is in Blountstown, Florida, in the back of Sam Atkins Park, which is hard to find if you don't have directions. You can find out more information at their website at .
