Canapé: March 2016 (in French)
Rendez Vous with French Cinema
For this new edition of Rendez Vous with French Cinema, the french film festival programmed by the Lincoln Center, Canapé chose to highlight two films Parisienne and Gang Bang . Parisienne, is a fictionalized account of the life of director Danielle Arbid, as a young Lebanese student searching for an ideal in Paris of the 90s. “Gang Bang,”the first feature film by Eva Husson portrays French teenagers that decide to explore sexual boundaries during their house parties.
Alain Mabankou
As an essayist, poet, and novelist, Alain Mabanckou is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished French language authors of African origin. His work is influenced by his childhood growing up in the Congo. His latest novel, “The Lights of Pointe Noire” was inspired by a trip back to his country. It was awarded The French Voices Grand Prize the night we interviewed the author at the Albertine books in New York city.
Innov Gnawa
Gnawa culture is rooted in the forced displacement of African people and expresses a desire for freedom. The healing ritual “lila” can last late into the night with hypnotic rythms inducing a trance like state of being. At Barbès in Brooklyn the Moroccan band Innov Gnawa invited people to listen and learn.
Zaretsky
Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957, Albert Camus died in a car crash in 1960 at the age of 47. Author of A Life Worth Living: Albert Camus and the Quest for Meaning, Robert Zarestsky, sat down with Canape to get at some essential questions such as rebellion and social injustice. In honor of the 70th anniversary of Camus’ trip to New York City, we revisit this interview. (Taped: 03/23/16)
Since 1996, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and CUNY TV have produced together one of the few French-speaking programs to appear on American television: Canapé.
Canapé is the only program devoted to French-speaking cultural events in New York and the United States. This monthly half-hour show includes film releases, book translations, exhibitions, festivals, ballets, concerts and theater productions.
Canapé is seen on the third Thursday of the month in a French-only version and repeated the fourth Thursday of the month in an English-subtitled version.

Tomas Fujiwara Triple Double - Live at Schlachthof, Wels, Austria, 2017-11-10 - Decisive Shadow
Tomas Fujiwara Triple Double - Live at Schlachthof, Wels, Austria, 2017-11-10 - Decisive Shadow composed by Tomas Fujiwara
Tomas Fujiwara, drums
Tom Rainey, drums
Brandon Seabrook, git
Mary Halvorson, git
Ralph Alessi, trumpet
Taylor Ho Bynum, cornet, flugelhorn
2010 erschien sein Debütalbum „Actionspeak“, gefolgt von „The Air Is Different“.

California Hair Stylist Sets Client's Hair on Fire to Get Rid of Split Ends
Hair stylist JR D'Angeles claims cutting hair with blunt scissors causes breakage and more split ends! The California businessman was recently seen rubbing a model's neck and ears with anti-burn protective cream before setting her hair ablaze. It's a technique he says leaves his clients' hair silky smooth. He didn't invent the method, saying he first saw it growing up in the Philippines, but hopes it catches on here in the states. InsideEdition.com's Keleigh Nealon ( has more.

Noah Wilson-Rich: Every city needs healthy honey bees
Bees have been rapidly and mysteriously disappearing from rural areas, with grave implications for agriculture. But bees seem to flourish in urban environments — and cities need their help, too. Noah Wilson-Rich suggests that urban beekeeping might play a role in revitalizing both a city and a species.

Immigrant voices make democracy stronger | Sayu Bhojwani
In politics, representation matters — and that's why we should elect leaders who reflect their country's diversity and embrace its multicultural tapestry, says Sayu Bhojwani. Through her own story of becoming an American citizen, the immigration scholar reveals how her love and dedication to her country turned into a driving force for political change. We have fought to be here, she says, calling immigrant voices to action. It's our country, too.

The Enormous Radio / Lovers, Villains and Fools / The Little Prince
The Enormous Radio is a short story written by John Cheever in 1947. It first appeared in the May 17, 1947 issue of The New Yorker and was later collected in The Enormous Radio and Other Stories. The story deals with a family who purchases a new radio that allows them to listen in on conversations and arguments of other tenants living in their apartment building.
According to Alan Lloyd Smith, author of American Gothic Fiction - An Introduction ISBN 0-8264-1595-4, a concept of domestic abjection is one that disturbs identity, order, and system. This is exactly what the new radio did in the Westcott household. When Mrs. Westcott saw the new radio in the large gumwood cabinet, she did not like the enormousness of it. The Gumwood cabinet is a dark cabinet and did not fit in with the living room furnishings and colors that Irene had personally chosen. This cabinet is dark and ugly, bringing darkness into the living room and their lives. Eventually, Irene identifies herself with the object.
Another gothic concept of The Enormous Radio is the element of buried secrets. Both Jim and Irene begin to recognize that there is tension in their marriage. Irene had many deep dark secrets that she feels guilty about. She has successfully hidden these secrets all these years until the ugliness of the radio brings up her neighbors problems. Irene has suppressed and hidden her feelings to others and herself for a long time. This is the reason she is drawn to the radio, it exposes the inner life of others and eventually hers. Irene identified with the others in the building as her own problems. It is ironic that the thing purchased to bring joy to the Westcott's life did nothing but cause trouble between them. Secrets revealed are sometimes not able to be handled well.
Alan Lloyd Smith also identifies Domestic Gothic as,[2] intimately bound up with the idea of the house, gender, and family, which becomes through metaphor, a way of externalizing the inner life of fictional characters.
Miracle on 34th Street
When a nice old man, employed as a department store Santa Claus, is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing.
Goodfellas
When Martin Scorsese, one of the world's most skillful and respected directors, reunited with two-time Oscar-winner Robert De Niro in GoodFellas, the result was one of the most powerful films of the year. Based on the true-life best seller Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi and backed by a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, critics and filmgoers alike declared GoodFellas great. It was named 1990's best film by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics. And it earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Robert De Niro received wide recognition for his performance as veteran criminal Jimmy The Gent Conway. And as the volatile Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Academy Award nominee Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino also turned in electrifying performances. You have to see it to believe it - then watch it again. GoodFellas explores the criminal life like no other movie. MPAA Rating: R (c) 1990 Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc.
