Russia: Irkutsk - A Siberian treasure
Founded in 1651 as a Cossack Garrison and an important staging post on the Trans-Siberian Railway, Irkutsk lies in the midst of the Siberia Taiga, on the Angara River flowing from Lake Baikal a mere 70 km away. Once dubbed The Paris of Siberia before the Russian Revolution, this is a fine city with ancient churches, tree-lined avenues and wonderful examples of wooden domestic architecture.........

Baikal
Lake Baikal, Russian Ozero Baykal, also spelled Ozero Bajkal, lake located in the southern part of eastern Siberia within the republic of Buryatia and Irkutsk oblast (province) of Russia. It is the oldest existing freshwater lake on Earth (20 million–25 million years old), as well as the deepest continental body of water, having a maximum depth of 5,315 feet (1,620 metres). Its area is some 12,200 square miles (31,500 square km), with a length of 395 miles (636 km) and an average width of 30 miles (48 km). It is also the world’s largest freshwater lake by volume, containing about one-fifth of the fresh water on Earth’s surface, some 5,500 cubic miles (23,000 cubic km). Into Lake Baikal flow more than 330 rivers and streams, the largest of which include the Selenga, Barguzin, Upper (Verkhnyaya) Angara, Chikoy, and Uda.
Ust Barguzin - Lake Baikal

Women in the city of Irkutsk walked around in their fur coats, as the deep freeze of winter hit Siberia. RT's reporter Thabang Motsei explored the fur industry in her visit to one of the world's coldest places to live.
Furs, which have been the only protection against the icy winds for thousands of years, are still the fabric of choice for women in Irkutsk, whose coat of arms features a sable. With coats costing up to $80,000 (€ 58,000), the fur industry is a lucrative one, despite its disapproval by animal rights groups.
Yulia Tyutrina, a renowned local designer of fur coats, gets most of her sable and other furs from the Russian trade organisation, which holds auctions in January, July and October. Commenting on the city's fashion choice, she said that it is trend which is mostly based on television role models.
