Lhasa, capital of SW China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is home to some of China's most renowned cultural and tourist sites, such as the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. Take a look at this stunning aerial footage of this enchanting city #InTibet xhne.ws/YNe6m
Barkhor in Lhasa, Tibet, China
The Barkhor (Tibetan: བར་སྐོར་, Wylie: bar-skor, ZYPY: Pargor; Chinese: 八廓; pinyin: bākuò) is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet, China.
The Barkor is a popular devotional circumabulation for pilgrims and locals. The walk was about one kilometre long and encircled the entire Jokhang, the former seat of the State Oracle in Lhasa called the Muru Nyingba Monastery, and a number of nobles' houses including Tromzikhang and Jamkhang. There were four large incense burners (sangkangs) in the four cardinal directions, with incense burning constantly, to please the gods protecting the Jokhang. The Tromzikhang market is busy in Barkhor, and the area is a major tourist attraction.
Because the Jokhang Temple has been a symbolic center of Tibetan protest since 1987, the Barkhor has also seen many demonstrations. In 1989, when year the 14th Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize, pro-Dalai Lama residents threw tsampa around the Barkhor to celebrate. After the Central government denounced the prize, residents who continued such demonstrations were arrested. The square was briefly closed by riot police during the 2008 Lhasa violence.

The Jokhang is a Buddhist temple in Barkhor Square in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. Tibetans, in general, consider this temple as the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. The temple is currently maintained by the Gelug school, but they accept worshipers from all sects of Buddhism. The temple's architectural style is a mixture of Indian vihara design, Tibetan and Nepalese design.
The Jokhang was founded during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo. According to tradition, the temple was built for the king's two brides: Princess Wencheng of the Chinese Tang dynasty and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal. Both are said to have brought important Buddhist statues and images from China and Nepal to Tibet, which were housed here, as part of their dowries. The oldest part of the temple was built in 652. In the next 900 years the temple was enlarged several times with the last renovation done in 1610 by the Fifth Dalai Lama. Following the death of Gampo, the image in Ramcho Lake temple was moved to the Jokhang temple for security reasons. When King Tresang Detsan ruled from 755 to 797, the Buddha image of the Jokhang temple was hidden, as the king's minister was hostile to the spread of Buddhism in Tibet. During the late ninth and early tenth centuries, the Jokhang and Ramoche temples were said to have been used as stables. In 1049 Atisha, a renowned teacher of Buddhism from Bengal taught in Jokhang.
Around the 14th century, the temple was associated with the Vajrasana in India. In the 18th century the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty, following the Gorkha-Tibetan war in 1792, did not allow the Nepalese to visit this temple and it became an exclusive place of worship for the Tibetans. During the Chinese development of Lhasa, the Barkhor Square in front of the temple was encroached. During the Cultural Revolution, Red Guards attacked the Jokhang temple in 1966 and for a decade there was no worship. Renovation of the Jokhang took place from 1972 to 1980. In 2000, the Jokhang became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an extension of the Potala Palace (a World Heritage Site since 1994). Many Nepalese artists have worked on the temple's design and construction.

Kendog Best of Mountain Kingdoms - Lhasa 10-13-17
Bused this morning to a street area that was somewhat closed by shopping times, we eventually ended up to a traditional Tibetan hospital. Walking up a couple of flight of stairs we were lead into a large room waiting for a practicing teacher physician to give us a short version of what they are doing and how this practice works. I was amazed at how many years goes into this, but chuckled inside when told about patients that like the old established person(physician) over the younger ones if their suggestions don’t work. We were next bused to the Barkhor Street area that leads to the Jokhang Temple and square. This temple is one of the oldest and most revered temples in Lhasa as well as Tibet and is closely watch by the Chinese government. The Dali Lama has a throne here and beautifully laid out went he saw people. After lunch at an upstairs tea house/ restaurant we had some free time to explore the square and vendors. We were next taken the precious stone garden or Norbulingka a summer palace or garden temple where kings, princess and Lamas enjoyed staying. This place has a rich history of art work and buildings. After dinner a group of us went for a walk to enjoy the street life and of course take pictures.
