Gerry Jackson - The Barley Mow
Jersey Folk Club @ Dog & sausage 19/7/2013
The Barley Mow (Roud 944) is a cumulative song celebrated in the traditions of the folk music of Ireland, England, and Scotland. William Chappell transcribed the lyrics in his two-volume work The Ballad Literature and Popular Music of the Olden Time (1855).
The Barley Mow has become a drinking song sung while comrades empty their glasses. In one Barley Mow drinking game, any participant who fails to sing the song's (progressively expanding) refrain in a single breath must drink. In another, participants drink just after singing the second line in each verse (Good luck to the barley mow); if one's glass is not empty by the final verse, one must finish the drink after singing the line.
A barley mow is a stack (mow) of barley, especially barley that was cultivated and then harvested. Barley is a grain that is commonly malted for brewing beer.
The Canadian chain of public houses owned by Jason Curry are named after this song.

UK: Dozens of London towers fail safety tests
UK: Dozens of London towers fail safety tests
A scandal over combustible cladding on high-rise residential blocks in Britain’s capital, London, is fast becoming an international issue.
Since the Grenfell Tower fire in London, hundreds of similar tower blocks are now being inspected and dozens found to be unsafe.
And as far away as Australia, there were warnings raised more than two years ago.
Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan reports from London.

AUTUMN GOLD Ralph Page Jig Jack's Life
Ralph Page's career as a dance caller began quite accidentally. After leaving school, he held a number of full and part-time jobs and played guitar at local dances. On December 6, 1930 he was supposed to play at the Stoddard, N.H. dance when the scheduled caller, Harry Frazier, who had driven Ralph to the dance that night, developed laryngitis and informed him that he would have take over the calling duties. Though that night has been described as a disaster, Ralph continued to call for the next 54 years, pursuing his chosen occupation with such single-mindedness and application, as well as evident pleasure, that he became one of the leading callers of his time and an important figure in the history of traditional dance in America.
In 1966, Page spent two months in England teaching and calling contra dances in a series of 37 events. A by-product of this visit to England was the recording by the Southerners Orchestra (from Kent) of an album entitled Southerners Plus Two Play Ralph Page, which contained eleven of Ralph's original tunes. This record, together with a companion book, The Ralph Page Book of Contras, was produced by the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
