Florida Travel: Welcome to The Barnacle Historic State Park, Coconut Grove
Just 15 minutes from South Beach and 10 minutes from Downtown Miami, Coconut Grove is known as one of the hippest, most energetic, most inviting corners of South Florida, but it also hides a secret from the past. Follow a narrow path through the hardwood hammocks and you'll come across The Barnacle Historic State Park located on the shores of Biscayne Bay. The historic state park was once home to Ralph Middleton Munroe, who preserved the forest on his land and, as a result, the property contains many large, old trees. Learn more here:

Coconut Grove , often referred to by locals as The Grove, is the oldest inhabited community in Miami, Florida and is currently home to about 20,000 residents. The neighborhood is easily accessible by car, Miami Metrobus, and the Miami Metrorail. The Grove was established in 1825 and is historically famous in both Florida and the United States. The first hotel on the South Florida mainland was built in the Grove. Where this hotel once stood is now known as Peacock Park. Visitors enjoy spending time at the Barnacle Historic State Park, which is the oldest house in Miami-Dade county.

Coconut Grove is the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood of Miami in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The neighborhood is roughly bound by North Prospect Drive to the south, LeJeune Road to the west, South Dixie Highway (US 1) and Rickenbacker Causeway to the north, and Biscayne Bay to the east.[1] It is south of the neighborhoods of Brickell and The Roads and east of Coral Gables. The neighborhood's name has been sometimes spelled Cocoanut Grove but the definitive spelling Coconut Grove was established when the city was incorporated in 1919.[2]
What is today referred to as Coconut Grove was formed in 1925 when the city of Miami annexed two areas of about equal size, the city of Coconut Grove and most of the town of Silver Bluff. Coconut Grove approximately corresponds to the same area as the 33133 ZIP Code although the ZIP Code includes parts of Coral Way and Coral Gables[3] and a small portion of ZIP Code 33129.[4] The area is often referred to by locals as The Grove.

Florida History and Cartography (1861)
Florida history and cartography is explored and examined from this vintage map that was originally produced in 1861. In the video we zoom in and look at various historical aspects that make this map so great. The map itself is a birdseye perspective of Florida that displays the state in a 3d perspective. The map displays various cities and physical attributes as well as other states and cities outside of Florida in the far distance.

Downtown Miami - Florida vacation
Miami is a seaport city at the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Florida and its Atlantic coast. As the seat of Miami-Dade County, the municipality is the principal, central, and most populous of its metropolitan area and part of the second-most populous metropolis in the southeastern United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami's metro area is the eighth-most populous and fourth-largest urban area in the U.S., with a population of around 5.5 million
Miami and its suburbs are located on a broad plain between the Florida Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east, which also extends from Florida Bay north to Lake Okeechobee. The elevation of the area never rises above 40 ft (12 m) and averages at around 6 ft (1.8 m) above mean sea level in most neighborhoods, especially near the coast. The highest undulations are found along the coastal Miami Rock Ridge, whose substrate underlies most of the eastern Miami metropolitan region. The main portion of the city lies on the shores of Biscayne Bay which contains several hundred natural and artificially created barrier islands, the largest of which contains Miami Beachand South Beach. The Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current, runs northward just 15 miles (24 km) off the coast, allowing the city's climate to stay warm and mild all year.
Downtown Miami is the historic heart of Miami, and along with Coconut Grove, is the oldest settled area of Miami, with early pioneer settlement dating to the early 19th century. Urban development began in the 1890s with the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway by Standard Oil industrialist Henry Flagler down to Miami at the insistence of Julia Tuttle. Flagler, along with developers such as William Brickell and George E. Merrick helped bring developer interest to the city with the construction of hotels, resorts, homes, and the extension of Flagler's rail line. Flagler Street, originating in Downtown, is a major east-west road in Miami named after the tycoon; the Julia Tuttle Causeway, crossing Biscayne Bay just north of Downtown in Edgewater, is named in honor of Tuttle.

Coconut Grove is home to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, elegant hotels, the Miami Science Museum, and CocoWalk, a shopping and dining district. Many special events are held in Coconut Grove throughout the year, though the most special might be the annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival, scheduled each February to occur during President's Day weekend. Coral Gables - The Venetian Pool (2013)
Music: All That We Are - Creel Commission
The Venetian Pool is an aquatic facility unlike any other in the country. It has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, and is still one of the main tourist attractions for those visiting the City of Coral Gables.
The pool was created in 1923 from a coral rock quarry, where much of the original coral rock was used to border and further accentuate the pool. It also features two large historic lookout towers, with a view to the City Beautiful.
The 820,000 gallon pool is fed with spring water from an underground aquifer. In the spring and summer seasons, the pool is filled and drained daily!
Of course the aquifer is not the only feature that enhances a visitor's experience. There are two waterfalls that provide a scenic backdrop as well as the cave-like grottos which provide a fun experience for swimmers.
The Venetian Pool's beauty is further accentuated by its loggias, porticos, palm trees and signature bridge. It truly is an unforgettable experience!
The Venetian pool was opened in 1924 as the Venetian Casino, which was part of the Grand Plan George Merrick had for the City of Coral Gables. His vision for his city was to embody a sense of true hometown living.
George Merrick envisioned creating a City with Mediterranean features such as grand entrances, plazas, and Mediterranean style homes. The limestone which was taken from the Venetian Pool quarry pit was used to create some of the original neighboring buildings.
With the efforts of George Merrick, artist Denman Fink, and architect Phineas Paist, the pool was transformed into a paradise that today is included in the National Register of Historic Places, the only swimming pool to have such a designation.
Venetian PoolIn its early days, the Venetian Casino was the destination for many celebrities, including such movie stars as Johnny Weismuller and Esther Williams. The pool was also a site for orchestrated concerts, in which the pool was emptied of its 820,000 gallons of water and the orchestra would perform on the pool bottom. Many years later in 2001, this scene was duplicated as a concert which was held on the bottom of the pool to commemorate the City of Coral Gables' 75th Birthday.
In 1989, the pool's first historical renovation was completed. Between 2009 and 2010 the pool underwent a second renovation. However, the pool's original rich history can still be observed as you walk through the entry fountain room and gaze upon its historic photographs, reminding patrons of an era long gone by.
The Venetian Pool is located at 2701 de Soto Boulevard, Coral Gables, FL 33134
St. Augustine, Florida, United States 1 - The Oldest House
St Augustine (Saint Augustine, Spanish San Augustin), Florida, United States 2002 - the Oldest house Gonzales - Alvarez
St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by Spanish admiral and Florida's first governor, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. He named the settlement San Agustín, as his ships bearing settlers, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida on August 28, 1565, the feast day of St. Augustine. The city served as the capital of Spanish Florida for over 200 years, and remained the capital of East Florida when the territory briefly changed hands between Spain and Britain. It was designated the capital of the Florida Territory until Tallahassee was made the capital in 1824. Since the late 19th century, St. Augustine's distinct historical character has made the city a major tourist attraction. It is also the headquarters for the Florida National Guard.
