Barone Ricasoli. Brolio Chianti Classico Riserva 2011 #103
Castello di Brolio is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees – on a picturesque hill in the Chianti Mountains. Baron Bettino Ricasoli, for the first time in the late 1860s, decided on what grape varieties a Chianti may contain in this splendid spot in the municipality of Gaiole. Inspired by the French wine philosophy, Castello di Brolio, one of the oldest wineries in the world, has brought three particularly fine wines to the market.
The main wine of the house – Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio, Merlot “Casalferro” and Chianti Classico Colledilà.
The fine wines are the result of a development that began back in 1993 when Francesco Barone Ricasoli took over the winery. He immediately launched an ambitious quality offensive: new vineyards were planted, and a scientifically substantiated program for the selection and propagation of the best ancient Sangiovese clones was set in motion. The youngest member of the famous aristocratic family also analyzed the individual layers – a total of about 250 hectares of vineyards on 1,200 hectares of land – to better understand the characteristics of the vineyards and the influence of the soil on the wine and avoid mistakes on the way from the grape to the bottle to be able to.

Barone Ricasoli with Francesco Ricasoli #007
Inspired by the French wine philosophy, the Tuscan winery Barone Ricasoli has launched three crus: wines made from high quality single layers, each characterized by their unique “terroir”.
The Castello di Brolio, Colledilà and Casalferro wines are the result of a long development that started in 1993 when Francesco Barone Ricasoli “bought back” the winery at the traditional Castello di Brolio, after it was temporarily lost to international beverage companies and quality did not enjoy the highest priority.
Ricasoli immediately initiated an ambitious restructuring: the quality bar was raised many times, new vineyards were planted, and a scientifically sound program for the selection and propagation of the best old Sangiovese vines was started. Ricasoli: “These old Sangiovese vines were an unheard of treasure.”
The research program at Brolio also includes the analysis of the individual vineyard sites – totaling 250 hectares – and their soils. Something that hardly plays a role in the Chianti area today. Ricasoli: “We want to better understand our vineyards and the influence of the soil on the wine in order to further improve the quality and avoid mistakes on the way from the grape to the bottle.”
Castello di Brolio, sometimes referred to as the “Château Lafite of Italy”, can look back on a 900-year tradition as a winery: the “formula” for Chianti with Sangiovese as the main grape variety of Bettino Ricasoli, an ancestor of today’s barons, ” invented”. Francesco Ricasoli: “With our three crus we want to follow this old tradition.” (February 27. 2011)

BARONE RICASOLI. CASALFERRO
Country: Italy
Wine region: Tuscany
Locality: Gaiole in Chianti
Vintage: 2007
Variety: Merlot
Casalferro 2007 from Barone Ricasoli is brilliant and garnet-red colored. Shows an interesting composition of cassis and black berries with many spices and decent hints of wood. Very rustic! Soft on the palate and full-bodied with supple and fine-grained tannins and a stupendous acidity. I agree with the baron, that this Merlot has been chiantified. Very long finish. Best now through 2018 (February 2011). 92 PS

Locality: Gaiole in Chianti
Vintage: 2007
Classification: D.O.C.G. Chianti Classico
Variety: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon
Castello di Brolio 2007 from Barone Ricasoli is the flagship of this winery and shows a brilliant garnet-red color with depth. Kirsch, black currant and plums. It´s stronger than the Casalferro 2007 and exhibits more roasting aromas of mocha and cacao. Elegant on the palate. Soft with butter-on-toast-like tannins and a perfect acidity, which transmits a terrific freshness to the wine. Roasted aromas characterize the finish. Minerality. A nearly infinite finish. Best from 2012 through 2020 (February 2011). 94 PS

On Barone Ricasoli of Chianti Classico
The recipe for Chianti Classico originated with Bettino Ricasoli at Castello di Brolio in Tuscany. Sean O'Callaghan of Riecine provides a brief introduction and history. The recipe for Chianti includes white and red grapes as the original Barone Ricasoli used grapes from a variety of surrounding fields and sources.
In a video from a few years before, Sean expounded on the original blend and the history of the region:

Große Geschichte also.

PRECISAZIONE IMPORTANTE: L'ACRONIMO A.I.C. ACCANTO AL NOME DEL REALIZZATORE E/O REGISTA, SIGNIFICA “Accademia Italiana dI Cinematografia” DA NON CONFONDERSI CON ALTRE DI DIVERSO SIGNIFICATO.

Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Brolio DOCG 2005

Chianti Classico Wine & the Black Rooster Facts you NEED to know!
The black rooster inspired me to revisit the wines from Tuscany, Italy. More specifically Chianti Classico. In this video we are opening a Brolio Chianti Classico 2016 from Barone Ricasoli, a entry level wine from this legendary vineyard.
As I mentioned in the video, I am not a big Sangiovese drinker myself. As I have encountered a lot of uninteresting wines made from this grape. This video is a push for myself to try to step deeper into the water, to hopefully come out with a different view.
With that said, I have had some great wines from both Antinori and Vignamaggio. Also a few Brunello di Montalcino. Not in love with the style. But at least I can differentiate by qualities.
