Diving in Barracuda lake

The Barracuda lake, on Coron island, Palawan, Philippines, is a very unusual dive site famous for its Thermocline.
Lake Barracuda is of more interest to divers for its unique layers of fresh, salt and brackish water and dramatic temperature shifts, which can reach as high as 38°C under the thermocline. The size of the thermocline is maximum one meter, and the temperature is only 26°C just on the top of thermocline (a gap of 12°C on one meter).

Le lac Barracuda, sur l'île de Coron, Palawan, aux Philippines, est un site de plongée très inhabituel et très célèbre pour sa thermocline de 12 degrés d'écarts sur 1 mètre de haut.
Le Lac Barracuda est une plongée unique au monde et très intéressante pour les plongeurs pour ses couches d'eau douce, d'eau salée et d'eau saumâtre. Les changements de température atteignent 38 ° C sous la thermocline. La taille de la thermocline est au maximum d'un mètre, et la température est seulement de 26 ° C juste au-dessus de thermocline.

Swimming around in Kayangan lake in the Philippines located between twin lagoon and just outside Coron Palawan. Barracuda lake is just next to Kayangan Lake and looks really similar. -

This video was shot during our trip to the amazing Twin Lagoons, Barracuda Lake, and Kayangan Lake. All of these places and their surrounding waters are an ancestral domain of the indigenous Tagbanua people. They are one of the oldest tribes in the Philippines. The footage was shot using the GoPro HD Hero 2 & the Kodak Play Sport in 1080p.

Scuba Diving in Barracuda Lake, Coron, Palawan, The Philippines hd 2011

Volcanically heated fresh water rides atop an infusion of cooler seawater. Marine organisms have adapted to the hypotonic shallows, where temperatures approximate 27 - 28C. Temperatures rise to 38C at depth, thereafter transitioning from fresh water to sea water. Snails form an important food-source for the larger members of the tiny ecosystem. Cleaner shrimp actively pursue divers.

Diving Barracuda Lake on our Honeymoon!

We are off on our honeymoon! Once we got to Coron, we went to explore Barracuda Lake and it's incredible limestone cliffs, haloclines, seasnakes, man eating shrimp and lack of barracudas. Plus we found some awesome 'quick sand' underwater!

We also stumbled across a WW2 wreck on Black Island! We call Black Island 'Jurassic Park' because it looks like it is straight out of the movie! Luckily no dinosaurs were found, or should that be unluckily? We also explore and dive in a dark cave on Black Island!

Plus, will Adam be able to find his one true love... coffee??

Barracuda Lake, Coron, Palawan

This was one of the excursions of the Medical Mission Foundation of Michigan, after the medical mission was completed at the health center of the Municipality of Coron. Approximately 66 operations (i.e., lumps and bumps) were done in one day.

Twenty minute banca ride from Coron town. Lake is surrounded by limestone cliffs and contains mix of fresh and sea water. Thermocline separates these two layers very clearly around depth of 13m. Water above is approximately 28°C and below it can reach 37-38°C. Reason for this is geothermal water spring from volcanic soil.

Dive guide told us that it´s better to go without wetsuit but we ignored him. It might have been wise because it got pretty hot in there :)

This is really fun, weird and must dive while diving around Coron Bay area. And from reliable source we heard that there should be Barracuda somewhere. At least it was there 2011 :)
