Barrington Court

From Wikipedia: Barrington Court is a Tudor manor house begun around 1538 and completed in the late 1550s, with a vernacular stable court (1675), situated in Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, England.
The house was owned by several families by 1745 after which it fell into disrepair and was used as a tenant farm. After repair by architect Alfred Hoare Powell (1865–1960), it was the first house acquired by the National Trust, in 1907, on the recommendation of the antiquarian Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley (1851–1920). In the 1920s the house was renovated, the stable block turned into a residence and several outbuildings, gardens and gateways constructed.
The house was originally surrounded by a medieval deer park and in the 17th century a formal garden was constructed. This had largely disappeared until a new garden was laid out by garden designer Gertrude Jekyll (1843—1932) in an Arts and Crafts-style. It now contains walled kitchen gardens, fruit orchards and ornamental gardens.

AUDIO: “BARRINGTON COURT CHRISTMAS - SOMERSET”
Between 2003 and 2009 Windrose’s predecessor, Trilith, ran Farm Radio. Funded largely by the European Union, this was an internet radio station aimed at family farms. Its fundamental aim was to help counter the isolation experienced by many people working smaller farms by keeping them in touch with other farmers and the wider world around them. A mass of features and news items were produced, many of them made by women from farming families who were trained as radio correspondents and worked alongside professionals.
Once established Farm Radio acquired an international dimension, with links to community broadcasters in Malawi and Australia. It’s collaboration with an Irish community station, West Limerick 102fm, went further still. Farm Radio and West Limerick exchanged both programmes and volunteers: two rural communities speaking to each other over the heads of urban society.
A series of features about life in our area was made for Farm Radio by James Harrison and broadcast in Ireland. These can now be heard again on Close Encounters.
In this edition…
A hundred years ago, the households of England’s grand country estates would have been busy with Christmas celebrations and looking forward to the New Year.
Today, many of these estates are now hotels, health spas or, as in the case of Barrington Court, near Ilminster in Somerset, run by charities such as the National Trust.
Such properties survive on a mixture of visitors, volunteers and a dedicated team of staff, and the week before Christmas we paid a visit to Barrington to find out how they were making the most of the festive season…

Barrington Court main stairwell - gep between floor and new wall allows water in (look for the bubbles at the end of the video when the wind becomes stronger). It's also making a lot of noise as the wind resonates in through the gap.
