Ireland's waterways, the River Barrow
South East Ireland's beautiful river Barrow is Ireland's second longest after the Shannon. It is unspoiled and sees fewer visitors and so is a haven for those visitors lucky enough to discover it. Seeing Ireland from a boat is pure unalloyed pleasure. This film shows the river around Clashganny in County Carlow and Sean Buckley's barge Féileacán (butterfly). Barrow Way
All is quiet at present about the proposed Greenway along the River Barrow as An Bórd Pleanála consider the appeal of Waterways Ireland.
Today I met a very large group of walkers from Dublin and Meath enjoying a stroll along this national way marked walking trail. It is one of the longest off road walking trails in the country and is prized by walkers for the wonderfully forgiving surface.
A few seconds into this video will demonstrate one very practical reason why the Barrow Way is not suitable for a cycle track.
It cannot accommodate large numbers of cyclists and walkers at the same time..

Taghadoe Round Tower, County Kildare, Ireland
There are more than 60 round towers still in existence in Ireland.
These structures can be over 30m in height and date between the 900s and 1100s usually.
They primarily served as bell towers, and the Irish name literally translates as bell house.
Taghadoe is one of County Kildare's five round towers and was probably never finished having reached a height of 20m; the roof was not put in to place.
A church from the mid-19th century is situated right beside the round tower and it has some interesting architectural features.
