Barryscourt Castle co. Cork Ireland Bird's-eye view
Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family. The present castle, with its largely intact bawn wall and corner towers, is a fine example of an Irish tower house. Both the First floor Main Hall and the Second Floor Great Hall have been extensively restored with fittings and furnishings reinstated. The Orchard has been restored to an original 16th century design and an herb garden has been reinstated in the bawn.

Exploring Drishane Castle and estate in Millstreet County Cork Ireland
Pictures of this and other castles in Ireland are available for sale from Shutterstock
Drishane castle built between 1436 and 1450 is now owned by The Duggan Family (who are heavily involved in Equestrian business locally but do not reside in the castle). Hard to believe but this castle accommodates over 200 asylum seekers since 1998. What a place!

R U in Ireland exploring Ballyhooly Castle County Cork Ireland
Beautifully restored castle in North County Cork, Ireland on a sunny day.
Ballyhooly Castle is situated amongst woodland on the north side of the River Blackwater near the town of Mallow in County Cork.
The original castle is a five-storey tower house with a relatively modern 20th century two storey fishing lodge adjoining the side of the medieval tower. The castle has been well maintained, and the house has been recently refurbished, making it a comfortable family home.
Ballyhooly Castle offers comfortable self-catering accommodation for up to eight guests, with three double bedrooms, two single bedrooms, and four bathrooms. The castle has a dining room, sitting room, drawing room and kitchen. A housekeeper and cleaner are on hand to look after the property, and cooking services can be provided. The castle overlooks the river offering picturesque views and pleasant walks in the nearby woods. The castle has exclusive private access to five miles of fishing on the River Blackwater, one of the best salmon rivers in western Europe. The Lakes of Killarney are within an hour drive, and other activities in the area include golf, walking, cycling and horse riding.
The castle was built to guard a ford over the River Blackwater in the 16th century. Ballyhooly Castle was occupied by the Roches until it was forfeited in the Confederate Wars when occupation passed to Richard Aldworth. The castle was restored in 1862, and the fishing lodge was added in the 1920s.

Castlelyons Castle, near Fermoy, County Cork.
The Barrymore Castle in Castlelyons, Co. Cork, was built in 1204 by William de Barry and became the main residence of the Barry Family for many centuries. It was a grand and stately house which was built on the ruins of the Ui Liathain fortress. The castle itself was once a large building which was roughly square in plan with a large courtyard. It was accidentally burned-down on 22 July 1771 thus ending the Barrymore connection with Castlelyons.

Fota Castle Cork Ireland
Fota Tower, lies on the western tip of Fota Island in Cork Harbour, in County Cork in Ireland. This building isn’t a real castle; it’s a folly.
In the 1820’s a John Smith-Barry migrated from England to Ireland. He took up residence in nearby Fota House which he had rebuilt from a hunting lodge into a large mansion in Regency Style design. An architectural fashion at the time was to have a folly (a mock castle or castle ruin) in your garden. So Smith-Barry had Fota Tower built by Cork architect John Hargrave. It was built in a Tudor Gothic Revival style on the edge of the Fota Demesne, looking out over Cork Harbour. It was used by the Smith-Barrys as a hunting lodge. During the last part of the 20th century the estate fell into disrepair. Fota House was restored but the folly was left to fall into ruin.Fota Tower consists of a main block of three bays, with a single bay block and two circular towers adjoining.

Castlelyons Castle County Cork
Castlelyons Castle in the barony of Barrymore is the skeletal remains of an early 17th century castle. Castlelyons itself was originally named after the sept of Lehan who were situated there prior to the Anglo-Norman conquest. In the early 13th century the confiscated land was granted by King John to Philip de Barry who erected the first castle in 1206. The de Barry’s later became the Earls of Barrymore and in 1621 on the marriage of David Barry to Alice Boyle a new castle of limestone was built on the site of the earlier 13th century fortification. It was the Irish residence of the Barrymores until 1771 when it was burnt down in an accidental fire. The fire was attributed to two workmen who were carrying out repairs on the roof when the wooden beams caught alight. The castle was engulfed in flame and according to the reports at the time smouldered for almost three months. The castle was never repaired and the beautiful walled gardens that once stood in the shadow of the castle were destroyed on the orders of the earl.
Sadly the remains of the castle were ransacked for limestone in the years following the fire, however its precarious but striking ruins still stand to this day.... Enjoy the video and thanks for watching

The next episode from my series 'Stories from the River of Time.'
On this adventure, we visit a ruined castle, built by William de Barry in 1204 and destroyed by an accidental fire in July 1771. The ruins of this castle are situated in the tranquil and picturesque village of Castlelyons in County Cork.
Audley's Tower House or Castle Game of Thrones film location
I'm down just outside Castleward near Strangford overlooking the scenic views of Strangford Lough. Here is well preserved Audley's Castle or Tower house. Audley's Castle was used as a Game of thrones film location.
Audley's Castle is a 15th-century castle located 1 mile (1.6 km) north-east of Strangford, County Down, Northern Ireland, on a rocky height overlooking Strangford Lough. It is a three-storey Tower house named after its 16th century owner, John Audley.
There are thousands of small stone towers similar to Audley's Castle in the Irish countryside. They are one of the commonest of archaeological sites, which indicates these were not buildings put up for the higher aristocracy, but for lesser lords and gentry. Most were built in the late Middle Ages (roughly 1350–1550). Audley's was built towards the end of this period.

Rockfleet Castle
Rockfleet Castle outside Newport, Co. Mayo, Ireland. 03.09.2014
Rockfleet Castle, or Carrickahowley Castle (Irish: Carraig an Chabhlaigh), is a tower house near Newport in County Mayo, Ireland. It was built in the mid-sixteenth century, and is most famously associated with Gráinne O'Malley, the pirate queen and chieftain of the clan O’Malley.
Rockfleet Castle has four floors and is over eighteen metres in height. It can be open to the public year round. If the huge doorhandle on the heavy wooden door cannot be opened, the key can be borrowed and returned to the nearby farm. The tower house castle is built in the sea and at high tide the water makes it very difficult to get into or out of the door without getting wet.

Belvelly Castle | Cobh
#TheGreatHouseRevival #Cobh #belvellycastle
Firstly, I'd like to thank Gary Wilson for allowing me to film at Belvelly Castle.
Belvelly Castle is a 14th or 15th-century tower house in County Cork. It is situated next to the small village of Belvelly, opposite and overlooking the only road bridge connecting Fota Island to Great Island (on which the town of Cobh is situated).
The castle was originally built by and for the Anglo-Norman Hodnett family, but was taken by the De la Roch (Roche) and De Barra (Barry) families in the 14th-century. The Hodnetts later however leased-back their lands. Some sources suggest that Walter Raleigh occupied the castle in the 16th-century, before being reoccupied by the De Barra family, and used by Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery to garrison troops during the Irish Confederate Wars in the mid-17th century.
By the 19th century the castle had fallen into ruin. During World War I, the castle received an increase in visitors when local coachmen brought sailors docked at nearby Queenstown (Cobh) to the castle – reputedly under the impression that they were actually visiting Blarney Castle and its Blarney Stone. The castle was occupied and somewhat modified by the Irish Army during the Emergency (1939-1945).
The castle was sold in the early 21st century and, as in mid-2016, underwent a restoration following the granting of planning permission for use as a private dwelling
Ireland's Kilcolgan Castle County Galway
From Ireland's National Inventory of Architectural Heritage: Kilcolgan Castle was built in 1801 by Christopher St George, who also erected nearby Tyrone House. He retired here having handed over Tyrone House to his son. It was built on the site of and incorporates fabric from a medieval castle, the present tower perhaps being substantially the earlier building. It has many Gothic Revival features, such as crenellations, paired and pointed openings, and pinnacles. The timber sash windows and timber door enhance the elevations. It forms an interesting group with the outbuildings, walled garden and entrance gates. It later served as a dower house for Tyrone House.
