BARTER BOOKS IN ALNWICK, ENGLAND
Barter Books is a second-hand bookshop in the historic English market town of Alnwick, Northumberland, owned and run by Stuart and Mary Manley. It has over 350,000 visitors a year, 40% of whom are from outside the area, and is one of the largest second-hand bookstores in Europe. It is considered a local tourist attraction and has been described as the British Library of second-hand bookshops.
The bookshop is in the Victorian Alnwick railway station, designed by William Bell and opened in 1887.The station was in use until the closure of the Alnwick branch line in 1968; Barter Books was opened in 1991.
The shop is notable for its use of a barter system, whereby customers can exchange their books for credit against future purchases; standard cash purchases are also available.

Barter Books has also been subject to crime on occasions. On 3 May 2007 a local newspaper, the Northumberland Gazette, reported that a book worth over £2,000 was returned to the book shop 5 years after it was stolen.
Barter Books hit the headlines in 2000 when the owner discovered, in a box of old books bought at an auction, a World War II poster from 1939. The slogan, Keep Calm and Carry On, and the simple design have turned it into an international phenomenon; and it has been on the walls of places as diverse as Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street and the US Embassy in Belgium. Barter Books, Northumberland (Archive)
A short film we made back in 2013 about the wonderful Barter Books in Northumberland.
Occupying a “magnificent old Victorian railway station”, in the heart of Northumberland, Barter Books has over 400,000 volumes on its shelves, and has been a focal point for artists, linguists and literature enthusiasts since 1991.
In an age of aggressive high street sales techniques, combined with radical changes in the way people digest literature via electronic devices, Barter Books offers a haven from unabated 21st Century consumerism.
The bookshop was opened in 1991, by Mary Manley and her husband Stewart, and was inspired by a summer Mary spent in an antiquarian bookshop in New York.

The Dwarf of Thirlwall Castle | The Search For The Golden Table
Welcome to my channel, here you'll find videos dedicated to preserving the myths, legends, culture, and heritage of the British Isles. Thirlwall Castle lies about 20 miles west of Hexham in Northumberland, and just a few miles from the Cumbrian border. The ruins are said to still be haunted by a dwarf that dedicated his life to guarding a solid gold table, which remains unfound to this day.

Exploring Alnwick by car and on foot
Join us on a street tour of the market town of Alnwick in Northumberland, including part of its network of passageways.
Who can identify the entrance to its long gone Bird Cage Club?
Look out for the former Gazette office where yesterday's news is today's fish and chip paper.
Spot the vacant home furnisher's premises which once featured a cafeteria where toasted teacakes were served in silver dishes.
And keep an eye out for the solicitor's offices, disused since 2003, where time stood still.
There's lots more than its famous castle to see in this ancient town.
