Meet Dr. Todd Smith | Orthopedic Surgeon | Wilson, North Carolina
Dr. Smith is a board certified orthopedic surgeon. Always active and involved in sports, his desire to become an orthopedic surgeon grew out of several sports injuries which required surgery. He practices general orthopedics and sports medicine at the Wilson location of EmergeOrtho.
Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then attended Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Stony Brook in New York followed by an additional year of training in arthroscopy and sports medicine at the University of Kentucky. There he received training in treating athletes at all levels of competition. He served as the Assistant Team Physician for the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Kentucky State University Thorobreds. In addition, he was the Assistant Team Physician for the 2004 NIFL Arena League National Championship football team, the Lexington Horsemen.
Dr. Smith is board certified in Orthopedics. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He serves as the Chairman for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Wilson Medical Center and is also the Chairman of the Division of Surgery at Wilson Medical Center. He also serves on multiple committees including the Peer Review Committee, the Medical Executive Committee, and the Bylaws Committee.
Dr. Smith treats patients of all ages and continues to treat athletes at all levels of competition. He has served as the team physician for Carolina Stallions semi-professional football team, North Carolina Wesleyan College, Barton College, the Wilson Tobs, and several high schools in Nash and Wilson counties. He is the Head Team Physician for the University of Mount Olive and actively provides sideline coverage for the Beddingfield High School football team.
Dr. Smith has been in practice in eastern North Carolina since 2004. His practice focuses on sports medicine including arthroscopic surgery. He has expertise in anatomic ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, and cartilage repair in the knee and shoulder. Additionally, he provides general orthopedic care for children and adults including fracture care and total knee replacements. He prides himself on communicating with his patients at each visit and takes an active role in working with injured patients’ physical therapists or athletic trainers.

Thousands of law enforcement officers are stationed in American schools — and they're a key part of the school-to-prison pipeline, which places students into the criminal justice system for matters of school discipline.
It started in the 90s, when schools began responding to rising crime rates with zero-tolerance policies. There were originally put in place to stop weapons and drugs from entering schools and to prevent tragedies like Columbine—these policies extended beyond to include smaller infractions such as uniform violations, talking back, insubordination, etc.
Schools in Oakland, California are exploring new ways to break the school-to-prison pipeline. These schools practice restorative justice where both parties talk out their issues instead of administrators suspending or expelling students.
