Barton Creek Cave with Belize Caving Expeditions
We went to Barton Creek Cave tour with Belize Caving Expedition! It was a thirty-minute drive to get there from San Ignacio. As soon as we got there, our guides equipped us with our gears and canoes. Soon enough, we were paddling through the river of the cave and inside the heart of the towering mountain. This cave was striking! I was surprised to see human remains and pottery inside the cave, high above from water. I became impressed by how the ancient Mayas traveled inside caves like this without proper equipment.
Our guide shared with us some interesting theories and techniques that may have helped the Maya people to perform successful sacrifices deep inside the dark caves.
The tour of the cave was quite intriguing, especially the history and composition of it. We highly encourage you to book this trip with Belize Caving Expedition the next time you're in Belize.

River Crossing to Barton Creek Cave, Cayo, Belize
In late December 2015, rains prevented us from visiting to the ATM Caves (google it), so our guide Israel took us to Barton Creek Cave to canoe into a cave used by the Mayans.
Those same rains, resulted in a water swollen river crossing where he expertly steered the 1999 Toyota 4Runner (2WD, Propane powered!) across the river.
By the time we left the cave, the continuing rain made the river crossing impossible for others. By the next morning the rising water level closed Barton Creek.
Day like this highlight why having expert local guides is highly recommended and ask for Israel at Belize Nature Travel, in San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize!
Leaving Barton Creek Cave (Cayo, Belize)
As the rain had continued, while we were exploring, it was best to leave the Barton Creek Cave via Mike's road. And again, local knowledge and experience, got us up a wet, slippery, gravel/rock-lined hill in a RWD vehicle with an open differential (1999 Toyota 4Runner).
This unmarked road was especially treacherous as it wound its way through a Salvadoran refuge town on the landowner's property (Mike) and access was only granted to registered guides taking visitors to/from the Cave.
Local guides in Central America are worth it!

Exploring Belize's Barton Creek Cave by canoe
Canoeing inside Barton Creek Cave, Cayo District, Belize
SANDI: This is another video clip from my family's extreme cave tour at Barton Creek Cave archaeological and tourist site in Cayo District, Belize. (bartoncreekcave.com). The video was shot in a stretch of cave where I had to actually lay down in the canoe and the guide who was paddling had to lean forward almost doubled over to traverse the low passage. This section of the cave can only be reached when there has not been any heavy rain. It is flooded part of the year.

Caving: Dye Tracing to Barton Creek Cave, Belize
In 2002 several U.S. cavers continued an ongoing survey project in the caves around Barton Creek. Before getting underground we visited three insurgences, sinking streams, and used fluorescein dye, optical brightener, and rhodamine dye to test whether that water went to Barton Creek Cave.
#40 Barton Creek Cave Belize
We were fortunate to stay at Mike's place at the Barton Creek cave Reserve in Belize. It was hot outside but we were able to cool off by diving into the water. The zip lines were awesome! We totally recommend a visit if you are in Belize!
Live Rock formations inside Barton Creek Cave, Cayo District, Belize
SANDI: My family recently did an extreme cave tour at Barton Creek Cave in Cayo District, Belize. (bartoncreekcave.com). This is the longest river cave in Belize. It has been featured in National Geographic and is on several must see lists. I shot several short video clips...and a few actually turned out. This one features live rock formations deep in the cave. To get to these you have to do the Extended Cave Tour, not the Standard, Cave Tour which is canoe only. The extended tour takes you out of the canoes and onto the path less traveled.

BELIZE Episode 3: Barton Creek Cave Tubing and Zip Line
BELIZE Episode 3: Barton Creek Cave Tubing and Zip Line
In this episode we try out two activities at Barton Creek, zip line and cave tubing. Zip lining was very fun but too quick. The cave tube involved a jungle walk and a long leisurely float. Rather than all my caves which are made of lava, these caves are all limestone. There was one exit in the middle of the cave that I really wanted to explore. Next episode we will go to the Sleeping Giant Resort which is in the middle of the jungle.

Barton Creek Canoeing in Cayo District, Belize - Jan 2017
Barton Creek Cave is a stunning ceremonial cave once used by the Mayans for human sacrifices.
You can do trips to the cave and explore it by canoe with a licensed guide who will give you the history of the caves.
It is one of Belize’s most fascinating natural and cultural wonders.
The tour travels about a mile into the beautiful cathedral -like chambers with your head torch to light the way.
